That is unfortunately correct. In motion it looks good, but there is some noticeable banding/colour artifacts, I believe.

I've only seen the first 10 minutes of Koe to test some fansubs to see which was best, so these caps are from the opening montage (and also to avoid spoilers):

Also, to check my suspicions, I Googled "video banding" and FUNimation's Steins;Gate was one of the first images! Lol. That's how bad it was.

Oof, that's unfortunate to see. Alas, even the original Japanese licensors are not exempt from mistake. At the very least, if these problems persist in an eventual US release, we know where it stems from.

Could be from a high bit depth source that had to be down-sampled to 8-bit color and didn't translate well. Tamako Love Story didn't suffer from any of that, and it could easily had been.

I agree! There also appears to be rainbow colour banding- like in SEGA Megadrive games on Composite (RGB Scart is the best!), so it's possible. It looks very weird and sticks out like a sore thumb. Yamada (Naoko, the director) is known for her use of filmic techniques to emulate live action, like lens flares, focus, and colour temperature/grading. Perhaps that as why it's like that.

My HxH Blu-ray has a side-by-side of the DVD vs their upscale, and the difference is staggering. So yeah, go for it.

Viz's DN BD release is a good one, imo - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...3#post11975933

So I watched the entirely of Koe no Katachi, and there's a ton of banding throughout. Even during that sequence about 100 minutes into the film, that was the most visually striking. It was a disappointment. I'm not at home now, so I can't grab any screencaps, but it really detracts from the beautiful art. There's a ton of rainbow banding like Mega Drive games on composite (that's the same thing I said, because it's the only example I can think of) I hope Pony Canyon will re-release it eventually with a better encode, but that's highly unlikely. If I had to rate it, 7/10. It's sometimes really hard to notice, but that sequence I mentioned earlier has it in spades. It's a 8 because of the beautiful art with the encode, but if you just want a score for the encode, then 6 or 7/10.

But hey! At least it's better than FUNimation's Psycho Pass and Steins;Gate!

I wouldn't say it's that bad, but I did notice some banding here and there. I've been told that my setup is rather banding-resistant, so maybe that's why this release doesn't bother me quite as much, in terms of banding.

I would also consider it extremely unlikely that a re-release is ever coming. I guess a western release that's better is possible, but I wouldn't put money on that happening.

That's chromatic aberration.

The chromatic aberrations (if you mean the ones visible near the sides of the image, while the center part of the image is perfectly fine, cleary visible for example Here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bx...W5KZXFDenkwLTA and Here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bx...m41Y21xWDJJa1E) are an intended artistic choice.

The banding, indeed, is a whole different story (but can be fixed)

I noticed that on the Haibane Renmei blu-ray, too - some of the blurring seemed intentional.

While on the subject of Kyoto Animation and banding, Funimation's re-release of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya was released today. When anybody gets their copy in, can I get an update on how their encode is? Bandai's release, while solid, suffered from some banding issues and was on the bit-starved side.

Depending on who gets it, perhaps an Italian release might fix that issue?

Does anyone have any impressions/BDinfo on the new Big O set from Sentai? I've got the Japanese release and I'm wondering if it will be worth the double-dip.
