I can confirm that the 203 does not have the super fast/missing subtitle issue I was having with Strike the Blood and Bubblegum Crisis. I also did some digging, and it looks like the chipset architecture is similar to the previous 103. (Aside from the new proprietary disc transport, new graphics and dac chips, etc.) Someone took the "upgrade" from their 103 and installed it into their new 203, and it worked just as in the 103. I ordered a 103 kit, since it is half the price if the new 203 kit. (Same chip with the four wire internal connector, and the external usb cable for the cowards.)
This unit is much, much faster than the 93, my reference Gundam Unicorn vol. 2 took about 45 seconds for the red loading screen, and it barely registers on the 203. Resuming a disc takes about 1/4 the time the 93 took. Noticeably improved dac, slight improvement in visuals. Super happy they got rid of all the apps, and the remote no longer has the 1 second input delay. The dual hdmi outputs are less confusing, correctly labeled, and no longer requires setup settings to activate. Will (hopefully) confirm all region capability when it arrives. |

Now if someone could just come out with an affordable, full 4K projector to use the 203 with, I'd be very happy. Oh - and it must be 3D capable, too. I have a ton of 3D movies that I will need to be able to play for at least as long as I live...

This has a new quad core, blah blah, super chip:
![]() Both players were/are setup correctly, and I used Gundam Unicorn vol.2 for comparisons, since I used that disc for my speaker wire and hdmi cable comparisons back then. Believe me or not, the picture is slightly cleaner. |

How does an OPPO BD player compare to a PS3 when it comes to BD video quality?

A high quality standalone unit will (almost) always outperform a combo/multi purpose unit. Back in the DVD era I was using a ps2 for movies, and at the time was a huge Sony nut, so I went out and bought the latest Sony ES DVD player, and the picture and sound were remarkable better than the PS2. I was using my PS3 for blu rays back in 2007 like most everyone jumping on the bandwagon, and it did it's job well enough. I have a friend that works at Magnolia, and he swore up and down that this newfangled Oppo played would put the PS3 to shame. Now, I was still riding the Sony fanboy tide pretty hard and had the opinion that: "Well, Sony pioneered the format, and there's no way they would short change us with the PS3." He told me I could buy an Oppo, and if it did not knock my socks off, I could return it no questions asked.
Needless to say I kept the 93, which was my workhorse up until just recently when I upgraded to the new 203. My 93 was having issues playing certain discs at all (I had to buy another The Prestige disc with a different pressing) and having this very odd behavior with subtitles from certain publishers. (Strike the Blood and Bubblegum Crisis leap to mind.) I settled for watching the first few episodes on my PS4, but the picture and sound were clearly not as good. Now, all of this is subject to many variables, everything from equipment, settings, cable, power, etc. I'm not sure you would notice a difference outputting to a Try n' Save special, but in my experience it is worth it. |

The only way I can get an Oppo right now is if I can sell my OMEGA Neo-Geo system. I've been using the PS3 as my main BD player all along while my standalone BD player is mainly use to play video files like avi, mkv, and etc. My LG BD player just sucks for BD movies, the colors look a bit artificial, too much edge enhancement, and overall poor video quality. My PS3 just smokes it at everything, but it's time for a serious upgrade.
With that all said, does a PC with MPC+MadVR that is properly setup beat any BD player? |

Is the Omega Neo Geo the AES modded for component/hdmi? How much were you looking for it?
In defense of your Korean blu ray player, you should be able to turn all of the artificial enhancement nonsense off. My old 93 obliterated my ps3. In terms of a hyper PC, I couldn't really say from real world experience. I can say that my blu ray titles that I have, uh, back up files of, do look and sound better off the disc on the player, rather than the same file processed by my PC. My PC is not super high grade, but in my situation the player is my preferred source. Here is my meager AES collection. I still have my AES console that I modded for S-Video myself with a whole bunch of resistors, solder, and a little bravery. ![]() |

Nice collection, I have Metal Slug X, KOF 96, 97, and 2000, and Fatal Fury which is just as meager as yours. Even with everything turned off on my LG BD player, it's still crap. I had to lower the sharpness a lot to match it closer to my PS3 and my PC settings. The default is just a horrible edge enhancement mess. A PC with a very good GPU can rendered BD movies beautifully. Of course I rather use a BD player instead since that's what is designed for. |

So I was rewatching my Bakemonogatari Blu-ray and happened to get close to the screen and noticed aliasing on the cars that constantly drive by on the roads I think it was ep 9 (though it may have been one of the previous 3 episodes) when viewed from behind the line between the roof and the front door. (also ep 6 when Araagi is going home from Senjogahara's house I think, the pole in the background "digitized" when he walks). Since so much is made of Aniplex quality, were these earlier episodes just not as good or do I have my setup wrong or what?

I can gleefully confirm that the 103 kit does indeed work on the new 203. A few quirks though. After changing to region b and loading the kaze Street Fighter II Movie in, the kaze logo comes up, then a black screen, with two 1 minute chapters that repeat. I pressed enter, and was greeted with awesome trailers in French, and eventually a title screen all in French. I stopped and reloaded, then pressed right once then enter, and then it was English trailers, then English title screen. I think maybe the language selection is in PAL or something. Anyone experience any weird quirks like this?
