We may have received the same encodes on the UK/AU release. Dual 24bit PCM Audio, no brightness problems and high bitrates.
Episode 1 is smaller than the rest of the episodes by a bit, but filesizes look pretty healthy otherwise considering files are 1m 20s shorter than usual.

Episode 1
Episode 2
The authoring house Anime Limited use has used the files direct from the JP discs without re-encoding in the past before, as AoA does so it's quite likely the files are genuinely identical if not close enough.

They take turns authoring with Madman. In this case it was dependent on who needed the title first. Madman needed Erased sooner so they authored Erased. Anime Limited needed Charlotte sooner so they authored Charlotte. (Charlotte was done by Justin, although unlike Baccano and Outlaw Star it does not use the JP encodes) Historically the titles Madman have authored have problems with brightness, which is primarily why I'm asking. Either they sorted things out or they're using Aniplex's files.

If I'm remembering correctly - apparently accessing/using the Japanese video encodes isn't actually all that difficult, but there's also apparently many things that can go wrong/break just lifting episodes and menus for re-authoring purposes compared to doing everything yourself.

Fair enough, I think I've seen a couple where Anime Limited has authored but the Australian release has come out far sooner but it was presumptuous of me to apply that more liberally.

I mean I'm pretty garbage at it but that's more or less what I've done before, the errors were far less a product of lifting the m2ts streams (as by that point if you're authoring from scratch but using the pre-existing compliant encodes rather than the playlists it works just fine from my VERY limited knowledge) and more of trying to keep the menus (a practice I've totally given up on and I've begun playing around with designing my own menus to avoid the mess that entails with more complicated discs instead, it'd sure be nice if there were courses near me designed specifically for people who want to learn disc authoring without the time-consuming trial-and-error process of self-learning ).

I highly doubt anyone outside of Japan would use 6GB+ for a single episode.

The Garden of Words UK/AU

Total size of the main feature with all audio and subtitle tracks is 8.54 GiB, of which 5.85 GiB is used up by video. The main feature size on the Sentai release is 10.6 GiB.

Also tried to make screenshots AvsPmod this time, but there still seems to be a barely perceptible difference in color. Still can't figure out what's causing it.

Screenshot comparison gallery. I matched my screenshots to the Japanese release screenshots from the aniblu.de review.

I couldn't really notice the banding on my smallish 32 inch TV while watching it in motion, but I imagine it would be a lot more noticeable once blown up to a large screen.

Installed DVDFab Passkey trial today and did a BDInfo scan of the 2016 uncensored Blu-ray of 'Macross Do You Remember Love?' theatrical cut. Ripping the disc right now. Screenshots coming soon.

Got my copy of the Negima!? BD Box in (the second series, the gag studio SHAFT one). I'll get around to putting up some screenshots in the near future but wow it does not look good at all hahaha. If it wasn't Negima and I wasn't pre-ordering and paying initial release prices intentionally to support the property as best as I can I'd be pretty upset, but I had a good feeling this particular one would look awful, the sources never looked good. Kind of a shame though, it's a gag series which doesn't hold up against the source material and there's not much going for that particular set beyond not wanting a gap between sets 1 and 3 (I mean there's also the CDs, but the tracks are super easy to get from previously released albums, unlike the last one which collected vocal tracks from various scattered drama CDs) so a passable upscale would have been a nice bonus.

At least I should can have high hopes for the third, much cheaper set as I believe all (or at least some) of the content in that one was HD produced.

Macross Do You Remember Love? 2016 uncensored release: Screenshot gallery (400 screenshots, 1.04 GiB. Could've made less screenshots, but eh. I just love this movie)

This Blu-ray is based on the 2012 “restoration” from the original camera negative, which wasn’t well received because of the censorship of some hilarious gory death scenes, and also for being a total botch job. Kentai did a write-up about the problems of this restoration in his aptly named blog post ’Do You Remember Hate?’. The contrast and chroma were changed so much that some of the grain became harsh noise in some scenes, which Bandai tried to DNR with mixed results. Besides DNR artifacts such as ghosting, there is also this strange phenomenon where often the grain is only visible in darker areas and completely absent in brighter areas. You can see ghosting and the strange grain in this screenshot. The producer of the restoration said in an interview that some color adjustments were Kawamori's doing, so I guess we can all thank him for going all "Friedkin".

Since the 2016 release is based on the same “restoration”, all of these problems are present on that release, but the censored scenes were restored and Q-TEC did some color correction and minor DNR has been added to make some of the noise less visible. Unfortunately, Q-TEC also added unnecessary edge enhancement in some very blurry scenes, that were blurry probably as the result of bad photography and not DNR.
You can see some of these changes in these Macross World forum posts:
http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/topi...omment-1256856
http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/topi...omment-1251477

And here is a comparison of the negative scan without color correction, 2012 restoration, 2016 Blu-ray.

It's not the worst looking Blu-ray out there, but a title of this grandeur deserves way better. Hopefully with UHD being a thing now, Bandai will do a better restoration in the near future.

Not a bad transfer, but I wish Discotek did a Blu-ray upgrade. When I first watched it I thought it had a brightness problem, but turned out I didn't set up my TV correctly lol.

Guys, I have a question regarding anime series such as Ghost in the Shell SAC. Were these series originally created with a digital master that is limited to 1080p resolution? Would there be any benefit at all for these to be released in the 4k UHD format that also supports HDR?

Anything post-2000 you can expect to be animated/finished digitally and limited to anywhere from standard definition to 1080p. Very few anime TV series (if any) are animated at full HD; even the very recent Your Name feature was "merely" 1080p. Most TV anime today is somewhere between SD and 1080p. Some are 1280*720, others 960*540, etc.

I’ve changed from AvsPmod to MPC-HC + madVR renderer because AvsPmod screenshots are slightly brighter. After fixing my madVR setup I get accurate screenshots: Caps-a-holic | madVR | AvsPmod

I’m probably not going to redo previous screenshots galleries because it takes much time and difference isn't big enough, but I have edited my original post of the Garden of Words with a redone screenshot comparison and BDInfo scan.

Anyway, mostly random screenshots from Mobile Suit Gundam Trilogy plus BDInfo scans:

Aniplex screenshots from hissatsu and vincentric. Looks pretty much identical. Amazon.es is selling the Dynit release for €21.38 at the moment.

That said, SAC might benefit from UHDBD's support for High Frame Rate, as some of the CGI was rendered at 1080i30 instead of 1080p24. Whether this is any better from a 1080i60 BD is beyond my technical knowledge, though.

If someone want to give a chance, I can assure IT edition of this title is the one with the best video available. Checked against any other edition, manually debanded on a scene-by-scene basis using masks, and highest bitrate available (36 Mbps).

Is The Place Promised in Our Early Days even licensed in the US right now? With it being a Shinkai movie, you'd think it'd be a quick pick for a Blu-ray release.

I know you can stream it on the crunchyroll site but I'm not sure they have the home video rights. I'm sure Funimation would of released it by now. Unless they're still waiting on the source material from japan or something else is holding it up.
