FUNi is now owned by Sony, so there’s really no excuse.

Then again, most people don’t know almost anything about proper video quality, and they’ve been getting away with it for years, so what gonna stop them now?

To be absolutely sure on this one the comparison shots are from the Japanese BD, so the source files themselves are most definitely not the problem.
We will be fixed soon, since AL france will not have the same master, if the banding/macroblocking is also horrendus on that edition then it's probably Kadokawa fault.

meh, maybe I'll just skip Re:Zero altogether, it isn't really my type of anime anyway - save myself some money.

Is there a MediaInfo on that m2ts available?

If someone can just send me that small segment, I can quickly investigate and tell you if the problem comes from the encoded file or the source itself.

More Re:Zero shots courtesy of llamareborn on the AnimeUKForums (you had to be a member to view them, so I downloaded them so everyone can see).

They're off screen, yes, but they still show how terrible the release looks:

How did this get past Quality Control? Oh, wait... FUNimation doesn't have any.

I really want an archival home video release that looks worse than what's streaming. Yes. Funimation knows what they're doing...I think.

What's your source for this, or do you have a link where this has been said by @anime?

Well @anime france confirmed that via PM to a member of a review site here : https://twitter.com/666dvdvore/statu...00391353999361

+ The fact that the UK use the Funimation Master, wich of course don't have any French dub or subs, and since the FR edition will have a french dub and subs it mean a completly new authoring is needed.
In short it will be another "Your Name" case, the french edition is OK wile the UK/australian is atrocious.

Better start spamming Funimation right away, I sure did, in hope (however slim) that they push back the release date to investigate the transfer and re-author it if possible...

Well, I just got my refund. I was on the fence with keeping my order anyway, and this just sealed the deal.

To me it's just mind-boggling how some people can take so little pride in their work to pass on something like that, both on the part of the compressionist, authoring house and Funimation. If it's in the master they should have rejected it and requested a proper one.

Here's another kicker, it also compares unfavorably to the CR stream... Have another one.

Yeah can remember that i never saw any such banding when watching the show on CR. I’ll wait for the MCM dust to settle down and see what AL has to say after they did some more checking and what they intend to do about it.

I also got a copy of it. Haven't opened it yet so cannot comment on the PQ.

I asked AL about it, and they said this:
(I said AL, please do more in-house encoding/compression if you can.)

Quote:
Re the discs - we actually usually do look to author our own especially on CR content if it makes sense (Rokka, Sound Euphonium and Kiznaiver are all our own authors for example) but sometimes to ensure proximity to release we do need to use the US masters.

For example, in the case of RE:ZERO if we’d done our own there are no guarantees we’d receive the master in time for MCM Comic Con. In this case we used Funimation’s master and it ensured a timely release that reduced the time greatly (no QC of discs required on our side beyond a nav check etc). While the compression is not ideal in this, make no mistake - this isn’t a Your Name situation at least.

Again as I’ve been a bit busy - I’ve not had time to look over the discs in full yet, but I am confident there’s not going to be a big enough issue overall to do immediate changes nor impact too much on most people’s viewing experiences. Either way, we’ll of course take fan feedback on board for Part 2 and look at what to do regarding authoring (time allowing).

That said, as this is the only disc available in English speaking (it’s for sure the same one the USA is using) then there’s not much we can do here right now short of an experience breaking fault.

Will have a look as soon as I'm back from MCM!

Seeing as Re:Zero is being distributed by Funi for Crunchyroll, it might be worthwhile to bring this to Crunchyroll's attention too.

How the hell did they seriously make a BD with worse compression than a stream? It's 2018, stuff like this shouldn't happen anymore especially from a long established company.

Question is, how do we bring it to their attention?

I've called them out on Twitter by tagging them both, but to no response.

I asked an anime reviewer in France I know (ViCklatereur) about it, and he's gonna review the @Anime French release, hopefully with comparisons, as he's done so in the past. That'll confirm if it's a bad master sent internationally or not.
