Will they eventually stop making physical media?

So physical media and theatrical viewing are both going away?
I don't see going to the movies to watch a movie in competition with watching a movie at home. I see "going to the movies" as simply a form of "going out". It's as timeless as having a coffee or beer or wearing jeans

No... and that article was written 2 years ago and clearly DVD isn't going anywhere anytime soon, neither is Blu Ray.

Rodney is clearly a digital/streamer troll there was no need to open this thread again with an even older article.

Yes, eventually it is. And this article isn't 2 years old, so the people in denial better start accepting the truth.

"There’s certainly no denying physical media sales are declining in the U.S. Sales of DVDs and Blu-ray discs fell 12% in 2015 to $6.1 billion, according to the Digital Entertainment Group after an 11% drop in 2014.

Meanwhile, digital revenues rose 18% in 2015."

They're still making billions of dollars with physical media. No, it's not going anywhere. As long as there's money to be made, something will be supported, even as digital becomes this generation's Blockbuster/Redbox/whatever.

You're right. The article is about 2yrs and a few days old.
It's linked to the Variety article written on June 3 2014.

http://variety.com/2014/digital/news...ds-1201207708/

By my estimation that article has a little less than 6 months to come true.

That's funny because the top of the post states...

"DVD Going The Way Of VHS In 2016
BY KRISTY PUCHKO 2 YEARS AGO discussion 114 COMMENTS"

And the first comment listed reads...

"Kyle Edgecomb • 2 years ago"

Physical Media isn't going anywhere, certainly not in most of our lifetimes... it will evolve and adapt just like VHS, Vinyl, CD's, Books, and everything else has. Will it be a smaller market? Sure, will everything be pressed to disc? Not likely, but that doesn't mean the entire market is going to suddenly dry up. As this board and countless others have proven, there is still a significant demand for physical media by those of us that likely spend the most money on the product. It's highly unlikely that those of us in our 30's will live to see the day that all physical media is completely eliminated.

Yep. This is all just silly as long as revenue starts with a "b."

This is hilarious. The very next paragraph in the article you quoted says...

While numbers like those might make it seem Blu-ray’s days could be numbered, analysts say the technology isn’t going away anytime soon.

These "the sky is falling" threads crack me up every time.
Why does it always have to be streaming or physical? One or the other?
Why can't they coexist? Isn't that happening right now?

Also here are few things that are still around:

Vinyl, newspapers, land lines, magazines, CDs, dial up, books, and probably a thousand other similar things.

At this time I will go check all my many existing preorders due to arrive in the next 2-3 months.

They will absolutely co-exist, but as digital becomes more popular more and more titles will only be available digitally. Vinyl, CDs, magazines, and books used to be the standard and everything was released on those formats. Now many titles skip them and are only available digitally.

Because generally new technologies supersede old ones. The period where they 'co-exist' is simply transitional.

It's unfortunate, but physical media will disappear. How long it hangs around for has a a lot to do with people like us though. We can push back the tide for a while.

In this case, cost of manufacture and distribution and warehousing eclipse all. Streaming is a VERY efficient way to distribute movies. They even download the films shown in movie theaters now so they don't have to strike release prints.

And one day the sun will explode.

But it is not this day.

So who the hell cares.

Sure, but since physical media will disappear long before the sun 'explodes', I understand why most people are no longer interested in buying what will potentially become 'landfill'.

I'm too attached to physical media to give it up at this point though.

They can do the digital takeover when I'm dead as far as I'm concerned. No way am I interested in seeing Hollywood win that little Divx war of theirs.

I can't be certain, but I think the Sun will expand before going Supernova, thusly consuming Earth. So technically the explosion won't really matter much, at least to any residents left on Earth, as everything we know would have been incinerated....including both Earthbound physical media and digital.

I'm not going to bother to Google this, but in about 1978 they told me that our sun didn't have enough mass to go supernova, but it would go red giant, and expand so large that it would burn up the earth. I think that theory still holds.

As far as physical media goes, I'm buying extra region free players, and taking good care of my burners. I will be the old man with the antique discs that have movies on them. That's my plan.

If physical media was fading to death anytime soon we wouldn't have UHD discs and players. Sure UHD will be a niche within a niche, but the point stands. Physical media may be weakening in some ways, but that doesn't mean it's death bed has been layed out.
