physical media is increasingly niche - steelbooks a niche of that niche. some of you fail to realize that there is an existence of people beyond these boards. if John Smith is going to opt for a movie purchase, he is more likely to choose the convenience of buying a digital copy rather than physical.
I been accepted that many of our family and friends no longer care about physical media like we do. Back in the day, everyone you knew had a shelf full of physical media, but that was a different time in history. These days, people usually only watch and listen to what's available on a streaming site. Cheaper and easier to access. Hell, I still burn CDs, but my older brother doesn't anymore.

Target and walmart will follow suit, target doesn't stock shit in stores and walmarts stock consists mostly of dvd and blu rays hardly any 4k disks. Our last hope will be amazon, but once they fall its over.. none of this matter if they stop making the players… were ****ed regardless…

On the bright-side our collections values should increase overtime. Who knows there might be a 4k steelbook/media resurgence 15-20 years from now like what happened to vinyl and is currently happening with vhs https://www.insider.com/pete-davidso...by-2023-10?amp

Yes, absolutely. This is my main concern with BB no longer selling steelbooks/physical media in stores - I can no longer inspect the condition of the steelbook I want to buy and make sure it's not damaged prior to purchasing it in stores. Now, we have no choice but to rely on ordering 4K steelbooks online, because, let's face it, Target and Walmart don't carry these items in stores most of the time.

And when we rely on shipping, we have no idea what condition the steelbook we are being sent is in (loose discs, spine slashes, scratches, dings, dents, etc.), prior to being sent. With how poor some of the packaging has been, we just have to hope these things don't arrive damaged all the time. This whole situation is a recipe for disaster for us collectors.

I don't know how some on here, who have most of their steelbooks shipped, have done it all this time! haha

One of the reasons it might push Best Buy closer to closing is that a lot of the people who bought movies from them won’t shop there anymore for other big ticket items.

It's not like Warner withdrawing hd dvd support and ending the format wars. But BB is still a huge loss. And it seems there may also at least be some internet speculation of uncertainty with Target as well. Wal Mart is still the big elephant for storefronts. I just don't like to see everything move to only online even if quantity is more towards new releases. BB is not even going to continue online purchases. Just having them in stores at all does help with public perception that the formats are still active with non-hobbyists. Plenty of people out there have no clue that new albums are still being made on cd and even in WM stores the selection is mostly safer stuff that can reliably sell for like $5 such as greatest hits packages from the biggest selling artists of all time. If there's an out of sight, out of mind type of public perception then the market may get extremely niche with only collectors like who visit this website. Luckily there's a strong underground market with the boutique labels, but the majors are still a very important piece of the puzzle. It's already bad enough that Sony among others are going mod with catalog titles and pricing them $20+ each year round. The hope is that no major studios withdraw from dvd or blu ray.

These stores obviously needed more room to sell """smart""" products.

I don't recall being a chicken little about this. No it will not kill physical media, and honestly I hate Best Buy so they can go out of business for all I care. But it's certainly not a good thing that a major retailer is dropping out of the home media market completely.

Also, Best Buy confirmed the report today.

I will NOT pay to stream! Hell will be be frozen solid before that happens.

If that future comes to pass then I thankfully have a large collection to fall back on. It simply means that my viewing will consist of only older films. Let’s face it though, any more they’re the only films really worth watching next to the sanitized swill modern Hollywood regurgitates for today’s audiences.

I am wondering now if I should not open some of my sealed Best Buy exclusive steelbooks. When they stop selling physical media I wonder if that will raise the value on some of them as they will be OOP.

Any chance we'll get clearance sales? Or will it just go back to the distributors?

How's everyone's Blockbuster, and Circuit City stock doing?

Like has been said why sell media when they can sell 1 TV for 3,000.00 and discs are 30.00. They have to sell 100x30.00 movies to match that one sale lmao. Plus Espresso machines, laptops, IPhones, Washers and Dryers, Refridgerators, PS5's etc. If they want to stay in business Physical Media has to go toodle-doo.

Only thing to miss is Lionsgate Steelbooks if you ask me. Good riddance.

In my next house, I plan to do the same. Minimalistic aesthetic and put all my movies in the storage part of the basement where they can't be seen. They're hidden out of sight.
The current preoccupation with minimalism is so depressing. Personally I hate the ongoing trend of curating our living spaces to look like bland hotel rooms and/or the domestic version of an Apple Store.

Not going to get political but I do strongly encourage everyone here to look up the actual roots and timeline of minimalist culture throughout history. It truly represents the absence of personal taste and, by extension, the individual. This way of thinking has lead to so many historical treasures being lost. To so many film negatives being neglected or junked.

Also, the alternative to it doesn’t have to be “clutter” (a word that has been grossly warped and abused in recent years) but balance. Don’t own more stuff than you can keep reasonably organized in the space you have. Instead of “stacks”’of movies around the house keep them either on media shelves or in dedicated cabinets.

Openly displaying my collection/film library is a major source of pride for me. I’d sooner abandon this hobby than hide it all away in boxes.

Putting this Best Buy thing aside, when do you all think the point will come where studios will just stop bothering to releasing movies on physical media period? In other words: new movies would simply come out on digital and not on 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD at all. Is that going to become a reality anytime soon?
