Are these random blogs? I don't get it...... I guess you can expect ridiculous articles in the day and age where you can find articles declaring the cure for cancer exists, but pharmaceutical companies are "holding off" for a better pay-day.[/QUOTE]
While I do actually believe that a cure for cancer exists (I wouldn't trust the World Health Organization as far as I could bi*chslap them) The whole thing about Blu-ray being a failure is pretty ridiculous, probably written by one of Toshiba's sweatshop slaves. |

I for one am tired of these multiple, random "Blu-Ray isn't taking off" threads. Seems like anyone can write anything these days, regardless of qualifications.
i have no doubt that as time progresses and the players and software become more affordable and HDTVs become the standard (and this is happening as we speak), Blu-Ray will replace DVD. It will take time, no questions asked, but even DVD didn't replace VHS overnight. If anything, the transition to Blu-Ray is a smoother one, since DVDs work fine in a Blu-Ray player, and are upconverted as well. The next person to write a BS article like this needs to be taken out and severely beaten. |

just wanted to chime in with... i remember having to flip quite a few dvd's mid movie "cough" goodfellas... in the beginning which is just one more aspect of that article not quite right lol. DVD started the same way, i spent $800 on my first player when i was 16 and bought $800 less car, i also remember the same comments, "does it really look better" etc... and yeah prices on those (the movies) at B&M stores have not exactly changed much lol, and didn't stunt that growth. Also i remember the idea of not rewinding and better PQ not being all that grand to J6P, and seeming more of a joke, yet look at DVD today

Blu-Ray has caught on and will continue to grow, if this was not the case there would be not be a rush from Hollywood to transfer movies to this format. Yes some have a hard time with the movies being more expensive to purchase, but at the same time the price is coming down for new releases and movies that have been released for a while, just click on price tracker and you can see the % that most of the blu-rays have fallen, since their intial release. Blockbuster does not charge a premium to rent their (blu-ray) movies (Unlike Netflix) but we also know the latter has an ulterior motive to promote their over the net rentals. Look back in history the beta folks whined just like this when VHS won, in that war. Let me say this, to the O.P. Do you think the companies which have billions of dollars tied into blu-ray will let it fail? When 2019 rolls around people will look upon DVD like we now look upon VHS....and blu-ray will be as common as HDTV will be in a decade, there is a worldwide downturn in the economy, which has not recovered yet, people will not be quite as fast to upgrade as they would be otherwise, if the economy was busting at the seams. One last thought if you cannot logically respond to a post without attacking someone THEN DO NOT RESPOND. |

You don't have the same definition of "Consistency" that I do. And she, like most of these articles, ignores the fact that Blu-Ray player sales are ahead of DVD player sales even if you don't count the PS3. |

That is what I don't get, I hear people complaining all the time that BD as expensive and over $30+ all the time yet I never purchase a BD if it's over $25 and I find them all over the place. Where do these people shop anyway? Do they know other places sell BD beside Best Buy? Plus if you wait a month after releases you can get them even cheaper.

I'd like to say hello to all being that I am a first-time poster. I have a few comments to make that I'm not sure if I've ever come across after hours of reading these forums.
Let me just state that I do have a blu-ray player and a collection of 150+ blu-rays yet I still don't see the death of DVD the way that many see it. I do however see the co-existence of DVD and blu-ray for an indefinite amount of time and let me tell you why I think this. I am a huge collector of horror/sci-fi/cult movies and I know there are alot of us out there. In my prefered genre there are alot of movies that are shot on DV or worse VHS. These movies cannot be transfered in High-Def. The masters themselves are the definition of standard-def. Yes they can be upconverted but why would one bother to upconvert quality that low. Let's face facts companies like Something Wierd Video (they may not even exist anymore but you get my point) and Troma (they still haven't released anamorphic widescreen releases of some of thier movies) are not going to be able to afford or even see the need to go High-def. I just hate the fact that people assume the only movies that people watch are modern movies with the capability of High-def. I admit anything on 16 or 35mm film can be transfered in High-def with superior results. Bring it on, I want more movies on blu-ray. I just don't see one format winning over the other because they both have very specific needs. Yes there are major similarities between the 2 but let's remember everything can't be High-def. You can't polish a turd. ![]() I just think the supposed war between DVD and blu-ray can't really exist for the above reasons. Blu-ray is a format concieved primarily for providing High-def whereas DVD is there for any-def you want to put on it. Not everything is capable of High-def. Would you really want to watch The Blair Witch Project in High-def. The movie was shot with High-8 video cameras. Yes it does have 16mm in it but the bulk is video, I just don't think it would matter and it would technically be fake High-def. ![]() Anyway, I think the OP is way off the mark because I don't feel one can compare the 2 for the reasons I have stated. Let me end by saying I love this site and have learned alot from these forums so thanks and I hope there are others out there who can relate to my opinion. ![]() |

Your opinion is very sensible, and a far more likely scenario than the outright death of DVD any time soon. There's just less incentive to go from DVD to blu-ray than there was to go from VHS to DVD. DVD is still "good enough" for a large number of people, and is likely to remain so. This doesn't at all make blu-ray a "failure" by any measure. Blu-Ray doesn't have to push DVD completely out of the market to be a success. It's impressive growth rate has already made it a successful format. I predict it will maintain an impressive growth rate, but will top out at some point and then co-exist peacefully with DVD until the next greatest thing comes along that replaces them both.
