Nah... I think that is all part of the "HD-DVD Going out of Business" sale of late!

I couldn't find any article about the sales of the A2, care to be a little more specific on how you found it?

The article is up on videobusiness as well by Sue Ault.

NOV. 6 | The HD DVD format significantly pumped its installed base over the weekend, as dueling store clearances sold an estimated 90,000 Toshiba players, according to sources close to retailers.

Toshiba and the HD DVD Promotional Group also declined comment.

Only 50k to sell or there were 50k sold? either way if this news can be validated it would appear otherwise.

I thought about half that amount was manufactured? In one of my other threads WickyWoo stated that only about 50,000 of them were manufactured.

WickyWoo? Can you call BS on this?

its on the high end of what I thought, but I am not surprised. I was figuring 50-70K... but with all the local shops forced to match walmart and take losses on their HD-A2 players... I am not that surprised.

Hopefully, those stores learn their lesson.. carry HD-DVD players and you will be forced to take a loss.

Regardless of how many they sold, I thought the article was pretty interesting that stated that in spite of the sale, the Blu-ray install base was still larger due mainly to the PS3. And the more of those players that were available, the better. It's just that much more stock that Toshiba has been sitting on, unable to move at competitive prices. It's not until they're literally giving them away that they finally move off the shelves.

It's a loss/loss situation in every way. It shouldn't be a surprise!
They (Tosh*t/M$) are going down the drain!

50K was the number I heard from a bunch of different sources

I do know for a fact the attach rate that they love so much was abysmal by the most liberal standards. By all reports the vast majority were sold to people buying them as a "future proof DVD player", or to fanboys buying a second deck for the bedroom.

EDIT:

The 50k was the Wal-Mart stock, with the other stores demanding a similar clearance 90k I guess is a possibility

There were a hell of a lot of unsold decks out there.
