It was bad to us but good for them. They take a short term hit but in 18 months when the dust settles they can then make Blus and have really suffered no harm. Since I am sure one of the first things they will do is release every title that was exclusive on Blu. And if they do that will you buy them? Most will say yes so what have they really lost.
18 months of sales at a level that is not even a blip on the screen for 150 mil. Sorry but from a business standpoint they had to take it. And it really does not have a down side since we are talking about numbers of 100K in week one being good.

that is assuming paramount's move doesn't motivate warner to take a payoff since hd-dvd isn't just universal anymore, which would create a perpetual stalemate, which would stall hdm until digital hd distribution is feasible like msft wants

if blu gets the win just a bit delayed then yes paramount made the right financial choice of pocketing the payoff and later entering blu-ray market at a higher install base. but paramount's actions could cause consequences to the market; blu-ray believers like to think it just delayed the inevitable but something more is possible.

think about toshiba having a firesale at $98 !!! there had to be an agenda behind that beyond the usual goal of simply increasing install base. i'd speculate there are specific target numbers they are trying to reach that relates to studio dealings

Sorry, if that offends any general public folks out there, but if you think about the sentence, it is true. Joe Blow goes to Wally World to pick up his video fix for the night/weekend to view on his new 720p Visio television. He doesn't look on any of the software boxes to see if it's in 1080p/1080i/720p or whatever the studio is releasing the title. Most of the people around Eastern Texas have furrowed brows and are dating their first cousin twice removed, so what intelligence do you think these people have? (Drastic, maybe, but you don't live near my neck of the woods.)

Anyway, I've talked to my friends who either like HD DVD or don't care about either side and they look at it like this: "Whatever I can get the cheapest way that looks decent on my screen will work for me!" Oh, and from my friends that don't want to spend money on HiDef period, they say, "Is it that much difference between upconverting and HiDef media?" I usually tell them yes and invite them over...they say that it's nice, but they will stick with SD until the price comes down on whichever one wins out.

So, to answer your question, it's the general public making bad decisions.

----Sorry, I guess it's getting late and I should keep my rants to myself.
I hear the same things from my friends and family. but most don't even know what upconversion is, let alone the difference in Blu-Ray Disc and HD DVD.

Unhappy Is HD-DVD gaining ground on BD?

http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/

For the 3rd day straight now, the graph is starting to go more and more in favor of HD-DVD. Right now they have cheaper discs on amazon, they have more higher ranking titles, etc.
WTF? What is going on?

Could this be the result of either a sale, the A2, or something else?
I have complete faith in BD, but seeing things like this saddens me because it shows they are gaining ground in the US which will only even further delay the end of the war, or worse, a stalemate.

Those charts only show amazon sales ranks and amazon has a BOGO sale for HD DUD right now.

Have no fear,.. 2007 is the end of the road for HD DUD.

Oh. So they have a sale right now. Good. I guess they are trying to gain some ground on us. If this is what their sales look like, it is far less than ours were....

I don't think this reflects free HD-DVDs released with HD-DVD players. Plus BD has the same offers going on.

You get 2 in the box and 5 as part of the mail in form (like the blu-ray one). 3 of them you pick with the purchase and those 3 count even though they are free.

There is no deal right now at Amazon for Blu-Rays, but there is for HD-DVDs.

It's the same as everything. When Blu-Ray offers a deal the numbers become vastly skewed towards Blu.

When HD-DVD offers a deal, they might barely catch up to Blu-Ray. Briefly. Once the deal is over it goes back to 65:35 for Blu.

Given that for top 1000 and top 10000 the numbers are still hugely Blu, does it even matter that HD-DVD is "winning" the top 100? Hard to say.

They are not gaining ground; Blu is still undefeated on the weekly Nielsons this year.

That is just a desperate move. If Toshiba don't gain ground on this one, the HD-DVD is dead as a fish

I just noticed that the 6th most popular HD-DVD title on Amazon is the Indiana Jones collection...something which they will not ever be allowed to release.

Default A Joke...

I am not worried in the slightest. Look at all of our exclusives coming from today til the end of the year. They can't even compete.

Thanks for the reassurance guys.
It is actually a good thing to see their BOGO sale do so little when ours did so much.
Sad really. Did you see the new viral ads by Blu-ray against HD-DVD on YouTube? Check them out at www.homemediamagazine.com
Crazy.

I bought a couple blu-ray movies yesterday from the fox/mgm one day sale. HD-DUD cult is big on ganging around amazon reviews and votes.

So I guess the PS3 with 10 free in store movies and 5 free rebate for a total of 15 free moives is not a desperate move I not saying it is but cmon now.

Who cares they are having a sale. BR does it all the time. HD DVD will probably never catch up anyway.
