I pay for stuff I keep blu-ray movies included. I am just not dumb enough to overpay for a blu ray movie. Like I said, most people including myself are more interested in "seeing" the movie than just the image quality. Image quality is very important, but it is not the decisive factor for me or the masses.

then you're on the wrong forum..... we're an elitist forum. very simple.

if image quality is very important why are you saying not every movie needs to be seen on blu-ray??? If image quality is very important but you don't wanna buy, just use netflix disc rental... cheaper than paying $5 on crappy Isuck for compressed copy.

But even if it is niche, if it offers the best representation of films you own, and you watch them on a large screen like you have it seems like it is in line with you wanting the best.

In reality this is the same battle Blu-ray has faced when it comes to replacing DVD. Everyone is comfortable spending money up to a point. It isn't that people don't necessarily see a difference (better quality, ease of use, selection) from one format to another. Most likely it's a cost driven decision and people need to see "enough" difference to re-buy or make a format switch.
Very few people can afford to completely replace their entire collection from one format to another without sacrificing something else. To me this ultimately hurts things like catalog sales and may impact the movies we see make the jump to HD or even UHD. I think we'll see a lot of people say they don't see a difference if a 4K BD format is released. It's just the way technology works. Nothing is future proof.

I don't think every movie needs to be seen on blu ray to be enjoyed. Was Samsara not enjoyable in 35mm? Was the Master not enjoyable in 35mm vs 70mm? Did millions of people not enjoy The Dark Knight Rises in 35mm vs IMAX.....I personally paid to see Dark Knight Rises in IMAX, I wanted to see The Master in 70mm...similar to blu ray, dvd, streaming, I don't watch all my movies on my big 42 inch 1080p hd tv, sometimes I watch them in my office on my small 23inch Samsung, or on my laptop. I watched the movie the Tourist the overnight on Netflix, it was still a good movie.

Picture quality is important, but so too is access to the film.

correct, the film is always the most important thing, but if you can view it on the best possible version, why settle for something inferior

I completely agree, this is the reason as to why I bought some of the 007 movies on blu ray, they were remastered in 4k, and then released on blu ray...I picked them up new for $6.99...I would not of paid more than $9.99 for these movies.

Because Summer with Monika is not worth more than $6.99 to me....this is why I didn't buy it on blu ray.

agreed, nothing is future proof. I gave up on future proofing my collection years ago, I know I'll be upgrading to the next format in a few years... and by "niche" i mean there's not going to be more than a VERY small handful (and by handful I mean literally a hundred at the most) 4K movies put out on redray or blu-ray with quad layers or whatever for another 5-8 years once OLED or Crystal LED comes down under 10,000 bucks

and there you have it. it's about MONEY.. not that that some movies don't deserve to be seen on blu-ray... they deserve to be seen on blu-ray but you have a price limit.. that's the real thing

Lol. It's literally a vicious cycle . I take a bit of a different view on collecting. If there is a movie or tv show not available on Blu-ray, I buy it on DVD or whatever. I take care of my priorities in life not to have to worry about double dipping. The movies I've picked up on DVD over the last few years cost so little (avg. 3 bucks) that exercising patience when/if the Blu-ray is available will save me more even with the cost of the DVD version factored in. The film is the most important thing to me but it doesn't mean I'll watch DVD's on a 150" screen so I get where you're coming from. Since I haven't had a PJ since 2003 I guess I'm safe for now. Also, I've realized that the more movies that come out, the less time I have to revisit everything in my collection. So that has made me think harder about what I want to own and re-buy than years past.

I would never of paid to buy the blu ray of Summer with Monika at $33.99. Luckily I saw it on iTunes for less than $5 and I was able to watch it. I would of gladly paid to see the movie in the theatre but we now that is not going to happen. Same thing with the movie Night Train to Berlin which was available for free on YouTube...or a blu ray for $30+.
You could of rented the blu ray from netflix
