Some interesting points being made here. I would add to the discussion a couple of my own personal observations.
1.) There are more steelbook/Slipcover/Special Edition etc. Threads on here then those discussing Streaming and they are far more active which to me suggests that at least on this blu-ray forum that Physical Copies are still the primary focus. 2.) I and i am sure many others that speak positively about streaming do not view it as a blu-ray replacement, at least not yet. It's true that it is convienent and for me has definately replaced Movie rentals from places like Redbox, Blockbuster, and even My Netflix account is a stream only account. If I am on the fence about a film I would stream it to make an informed purchasing decision. 3.) The points made about TV sales and PC Sales is a flawed argument from the start as they both have the same issue. The issue is that people already own them. If I already have a 4 year old PC that works just fine, why would I buy another? If I Have a 55" 1080P Television from 2 years ago, What compelling argument can be made for me to buy another TV? 4.) The convienience argument that you make is valid. Especially younger folks who are being conditioned to believe that ok is good enough ( I mean without getting into to much of a social comentary, we don't even promote exceptionalism in education anymore. In public schools every one gets a 1st place ribbon for just participating anymore because we don't want anyone to have hurt feelings.) So accepting medeocre is just par for the course for them and will continue into the near future. However there are still those of us that appriciate Quality over Convience. 5.) As per the streaming/Downloading wining, Well with data caps on internet lines and limited bandwidth as next generation UHD systems begin making their way onto the scene we will require even greater bandwidth and at least for the meantime will mitigate the complete demise of the Physical format. 6.) You better believe that when it becomes realistically feasable that Studios and content creators will eventually move away from a physical product for a Streaming only copy. However I don't think that People are quite ready for the DRM, You Own Nothing, Rent as you go model that the studios will impose on us in the near future. but 10 years from now, Who knows? Hope that adds to the discussion Thanks, T |

You will likely be able to still watch movies and have the "Big screen" experience but it will likely be generated by a 1" screen placed a few inches from your eye (not sure the exact precise sizes and distances) like the occulous Rift which is touted for geming currently but could lead to lighter and more exciting Movie and big screen experiences then even the biggest Imax. Where we will suffer is in the Audio department when little ear buds and cell phone speakers become the norm.

It is not a war, it is natural progression.
In the future we will not deliver 1s and 0s to consumers homes by wasting resources manufacturing plastic discs, plastic boxes and transporting them around the world in planes and trucks. It will be seem absurd, just as absurd as delivering mail by pony would today. Things change, get used to it. |

Steedy, I think that current optical formats will be with us for many years yet, but UHD BD might well be the first casualty of the streaming generation. I've still got everything crossed that it'll make it to market, but the signs aren't good. If anything, the as-yet undecided specs for UHD 1 could be the nail in the coffin, as the longer that takes, the longer that UHD BD will have to wait.
Even if it does get realised, it may be restricted to current colour space tech rather than Rec.2020 (or even XYZ) so as not to disenfranchise the early adopters of 4K whose kit can't handle the improved colour. But a streamed 4K system won't have to worry about having the standards set in stone like that, not as far as software is concerned anyway, i.e. you've downloaded the Rec.709 version but then along comes the Rec.2020 edition which you can just download over top of it. |

Could not disagree with this more. There are a Thousands of Movies I would not mind seeing that I would Likely not Purchase on Blu or DVD (AKA Disk) but still want to see them comercial and censor free. To say it is only for lazy people may be one of the most ignorant coments I have seen and there are a lot of those on the internet.

Netflix is not the only source of streaming. There is Hulu, Vudu, Sony Video Unlimited, Amazon VOD, Netflix of course, HBO go, Crunchyroll, Funimation, and hundreds of other Smaller VOD services, Just look at the Channel list for the Roku box for example and you will likely find streaming choices for just about everyones tastes.
Thanks, T |
