People taking a breather before the next rebuttal round?

Why do you believe consumer demand for physical media would freeze technological advancement? Is there any reason to believe the capabilities of physical media cannot keep pace with future generations of home video?

First off, optical discs aren't the only form future physical releases can take and secondly, the capacity of optical discs isn't carved in stone. Sure, optical discs look pretty limited through 2013 eyes but, you know,...

As for delivery, that same generation with the soon-to-be purchasing power has been raised downloading their songs, not albums, on iTunes or Amazon (for the legal ones anyways), purchasing their games the same way. Even when they purchase hard copies, it's still from Amazon. The concept of B&M is already dying a painful death when it comes to media. The step from there is rather small. Well, that's fine Nick, it's not for tomorrow, but with better infrastructures in place, in time, and with hindsight many will laugh at our opposition as is always the case when new technology that changes important foundations. But to deny that it will happen is just plain ridiculous IMO. Now if someone really believes media will be hard-copy for ever, that's ok, I just don't see it.
What advancements? Dancing pixels?

hehe, that was fun but I see I'm on the losing side and admit defeat. And to be fair to everyone, including me, we just don't know either way. So crazy pent is taking his bow and may your futures hold what you desire.

Time for a BD

Edit: Come on Steed, if I can use Steed, every hard media has to have strict standards that lock free-flowing upgrades, such as better compression, a better color standard, damn, all the things everyone on here are wishing for, including higher resolutions. I'm sorry but that was a low blow and believe I've been civile up to now and feel that was really uncalled for.

you keep saying "I don't care" over and over like a broken record. If you don't care what media it will be why are you pushing so hard for streaming and download then if you don't care. Seems more like you do care or you wouldn't contribute in this argument we have here

I also wanted to share this real world example for those saying the younger generation are going to ruin big screen viewing. My little cousin (around 10 years old) has a Kindle Fire, smart phone, etc. and loves them. Yet every time she comes over my house the first thing she wants to do is get on my computer because it's hooked up to my big screen. I know this is just one example - one child compared to billions, but just saying. Even the younger generation enjoys a large screen. As for the media argument, like I said, if you can deliver me the quality I expect from physical media through downloads/streaming without forcing me to shell out a ton for HDD space or higher Internet speeds, then I'm all for it.

you have lost me.
Are you referring to my dancing pixels comment? I stand by that. How is going from bluray quality to highly compressed streaming advancement? Or watching on a stupid tablet screen. Where is the advancement?

Also, how is it a low blow? It's an opinion?

Are you "all for it" also if you don't "own" the things you stream or download ?
I certainly am not that is what is just the nail in the coffin for me with streaming and downloads. I got netflix and i love it. But when i wanna own something i want it in physical media and the Best quality and i think most collectors if not all feel the same way.

Not entirely true. What if they did a flash drive type media? Come out with a better color space or compression or whatever? No problem, plug your flash drive in, log into xyz.com and enter your proof of purchase or key or whatever (unless they encode it on the drive, which would be the smartest thing to prevent/deter pirating) and zoom your updated movie file is downloaded to the drive. I could see that being a viable option. Although this kind of contradicts my other point. If flash drives become so cheap they can do that then HDD space will most likely be just as cheap, making downloading an option in my case. Still trying to convince myself this argument is even worth it though, as I don't see any reason why all these forms of delivery won't continue to co-exist as they do now. But whatever, the discussion is fun lol.

You better believe it. Agree 100 percent. It just ain't the same flicking through a load of films on a service.

Well yes, seeing how that's how I get my PC games anyways (Steam, Origin, Ubisoft, etc.), but I definitely do see your point. Getting rid of physical media completely will destroy any kind of sharing/reselling market and of course like you said, collectors need something physical to you know, collect. So while my answer is yes, I would still be all for it, I completely understand why you and the others have a concern with that regards.

I just keep getting sucked in it seems.

Ok, long explanation!

Not caring does NOT mean not seeing our future in a certain way that makes sens as a continuation to our huge dependence on always being connected. In all honesty, how many 17-30 years old do you know who are not always "on"?

As for media, ok, my collection has dwindled at only 560 or so, so I obviously don't value ownership. Just that a while back a buddy came over (had close to 1000 then) and asked me how many I had. Then if I was planing on watching them at least another time, to which I answered at least 3. He then quickly said (fast guy in maths) so you have all your nights for the next 9 years planned out for you, cool.

Knowing that we aren't stopping at 1080p kinda put a major break, as like all here I believe, when it's out there, it will appear here before the streets and we'll all wish for that 70" 8k oled with glassless 3D.

Ok, so my answer is in my previous post and I do wish all goodnight

Funny thing though, a quick glimpse seems to reveal that I'm one with the biggest collections in the posters in this thread

By the way, you are not the biggest collector. I have more, but Octagon is over 1,000.

Good thing my argument isn't for the collection part (see previous post). I'm not caught up with the slip covers and collecting physical copies, owning it vs owning rights etc., doesn't matter to me. I'm just concerned with the quality I'm able to get and how easy/expensive it'll be to get that quality (buying a disc with everything I need VS needing better Internet or more HDD storage w/ streaming/downloading).

You know what Mr dancing pixels, and I don't care if I'm banned, but you are either the stupidest member here, or the most arrogant. I don't care for either!

Did I say I had the biggest, I said I was one of them, as many who protest have so little it's laughable.
Goodnight

You still haven't answered the question. How is commenting about streaming having dancing pixels a low blow towards you?

By the way, you did say you were the one with biggest collection. Check your post again.

First off, you are the one assuming that the PQ/AQ will be substandard, not I. And I apologise if my command of the english language is not up to your standards, but the "s" in collections should have done the trick. Guess not. Care for me to explain in french then?

Why is everyone assuming we'll never get better than BD if something replaces BD. Who said the quality will be crap. Oh, I guess since you don't understand my idea of technical advancement, you don't get that either.

Tell me this then. Why is it that some of the most picky, difficult to please and willing to go all the way people (read audiophile) are already enjoying hi res downloads, and not because it's not available on SACD as often they are. Why you ask?

Because they can play it on whatever system they want, at anytime, hey, 2 different persons can even listen to a different track at a time, in different rooms, wow, how neat is that?
