Maybe right now but it's naive to think digital sales won't escalate in the same way they have for itunes and music as more consumers continue to micromanage their media to pocket devices, tablets, and computers. Even on this forum there's an active market of people wanting digital codes for a clearly inferior product.

I started doing the same with my videocassette collection. I sold much of it on eBay and started to replace all my titles with DVD's. Then Blu-ray came out. I still buy DVD's and I only buy Blu-rays for movies that matter.
There is no point in replacing all the DVD's with Blu-rays. No technology becomes the standard forever. Blu-rays and DVD's will be phased out eventually by the next decade which is sad. I love Blu-ray and I refuse to invest in anything new anymore. I wish this Blu-ray tech would stay the standard of choice forever. |

now we don't have 2013 numbers since the year is not over and I am sure it would inch a bit higher (like it did in 2012). But compare it to DVD, VHS was gone in under 10 years not at 1/3 well after 10 years. compare it to BD where it is almost there now (and obviously growing faster). And this is for music, which let's face it, is a much easier sale 1) I like being able to have a few songs while I walk the dog, I will never need any let alone a few films while I walk him, so portability is important foir music but not films 2) when I sit to watch a film, it has my undivided attention, most times it is just background noise. So often enough quality is not as important for music as it is for films 3) Music has very small files so it is easy to have a large library of iTunes songs (or losslessly compressed) on a small drive, it becomes extremely expensive when the files are 30GB+ film files |

Some of u here say "4k is for download..." do any of u know how much storage space or bandwidth you need to transfer a 4k movie. ? It's a bit more then we have today with bd movies or streaming movies in 720p. Guess most here dont even is close to having a internet connection capable to transfer this amount of date. I did this week watch a 4k tv but the funny thing was that all they had to show was still photos no movies just jpeg pictures in 4k. Looked fantastic but the problem is no storage and not a internet connection to transfer this huge amount of date needed. So you could say why did the producers of tv's not wait until they had a way of storing a 4k on any sort of storage device. Ces is very close now so maybe we get a solutions in january. Maybe 4k Blu-ray. |

agree with the first part. I think the second part shows the issue youi need someone that cares enough about quality to spend the $$$$ but that is dumb enough not to realize he is not getting it. At least with 1080p streaming it came years after many had 1080p TVs so it makes sense for someone to care enough just to get the best for the TV he has.

If we get a download format that is better than Blu Ray or 4Kdisc format , and where the movies you purchase are always available to redownload from a server ( so you won't have to worry about backup..) if that happens then Blu Ray is the last physical format.

To me... The idea of having to download so much data seems wasteful.
A Blu Ray can have 50Gb of data.... the thought of instantly downloading such large amounts of data seems wasteful to me... But,... that's just me. I dont' know what's after Blu but Blu is it for me. Make mine Blu. I'm middle aged... I will be glad for forty more years but I could go tomorrow. I'm just going to keep my collection blu... I don't care about the next formats. -Brian |

"What will happen after Blu-ray?"
100GB Blu ray Disc's, 128GB Blu ray Disc's, 200GB BD's, etc. Also much improved video codecs. I believe in the future it will be possible to have 8K movies on a 50GB Blu ray disc's with very, very much improved video codecs. |
