Steve Jobs famously called the format a "bag of hurt." - yeah, Apple is always knows what's best in technology. iPad play Flash yet? no, only the rest of the world but Apple knows best.
Blu-ray isn't dying but it is getting adjusted. Even when blu-ray first came out, streaming wasn't huge yet but it has grown over the years so it isn't surprising that blu-ray sales would be down when you can download or watch it on things like Netflix. Other choices have come up that weren't a factor a few years ago but that doesn't mean blu-ray is dying, just that companies like Sony have to adjust to lower expectations. CDs haven't died just because of mp3 and that has been around for 15+ years, why would blu-ray? Unless the industry decides to flatout stop producing it, physical media isn't going away anytime soon and dvd will disappear long before blu-ray. |

You can't look at one week. You have to look at cumulative revenue. And for 2014, through 4/19 in the U.S., Blu-ray still has only a 21.9% unit share and a 32.5% dollar share of the physical media market, a market that itself is in severe overall decline. Sales to 4/19 of both DVD and BD are $2.265 billion this year as compared to $3.133 billion in 2010 at this time (week 16). They've been in decline ever since. It's true that Blu-ray unit sales are up 5.84% year over year, but in dollars, they're up only 1.66% due to declining prices. At this time last year, BD $ sales were up 24.88% over 2012. To a business analyst (and to Wall Street), that 1.66% increase in BD dollar sales doesn't look very good. When companies look at their businesses, they're going to invest in the ones that show the most promise. And Sony especially is known for losing interest in businesses that don't pan out: MiniDisc, SDDS Theatrical sound and SACD in the U.S. are just a few examples of where Sony abandoned the market. To much criticism and put-downs, I've been warning about this for years. I always said that BD had to grow fast or the studios would lose interest. IMO, the one thing in BD's favor is that internet infrastructure in the U.S. sucks. That will keep people who want quality tied to the Blu-ray. But it's in danger of becoming a niche format, like Laserdisc was. But today, the big conglomerates couldn't care less about niche formats. It's not that Sony will stop issuing Blu-rays. It's that Sony will stop investing in restorations, extras, etc. Their announcement was a warning to Wall Street not to expect much growth in Blu-ray. |

As for Apple, not having Flash isn't a problem. They have QT. Visit most any site and they will provide said video in QuickTime, from YouTube to YouPorn. That says a lot. The world adjusted to Apple vs the other way around. Thing of it is, and this is a criticism I've read is that Blu-ray isn't the cash cow everyone, especially Sony, predicted. Blu-ray is 8 years old. It only has around 30% of the total disc market. in 2003, when DVD was 8 years old, it had 70% of the movie sales market. Sony, as not only a studio, but as a company holding patents on BD technology hasn't figured out how to saturate the market with players and discs. Maybe it was just too soon after DVD. And there wasn't streaming when Blu-ray came out in 2006. Ironically, if you watch the movie The Smartest Guy in The Room about Enron, years before NetFlix, they were telling investors about an internet streaming movie service and enticing them with how wonderful it was and they were almost ready to launch. Truth is they had no idea how to make it work, this was back in the late 90s when everyone had dial up and a fast residential connection might be a 128K ISDN line. A few had 1mbps DSL or cable. |

What's to worry about anyway? Everything changes and it usually gets better. I love my blu rays! But I do a lot on VUDU now and it saves me a ton of cash. I like to see most movies and now I don't have to go out and pay $20 to have it and end up not liking it and then trying to sell it. Now my physical collection is growing at an acceptable rate. I'm at a Happy Place right now. If Blu Ray goes away, as I'm sure one day it will. I won't upgrade my collection again, but I'll continue watching via internet or whatever media comes next. I'm a Movie Lover, not a Blu Ray media Fanatic. Aren't we all? |

and he's right... if they stop making physical media then I'm out of the game... no more buying new releases for me. no more buying at all actually. there are other hobbies out there...they drove an avid gamer of 15+ hours a week (on a bad week) to almost no gaming whatsoever because of the ridiculous DLC issues along with "season passs" or online codes to activated your multiplayer (meaning buying used is out of the picture)... they can drive me from this hobby too Last edited by wormraper; 05-01-2014 at 10:10 PM. |

With Sony and Samsung about to duke it out in Best Buy for 4K Supremacy, I guess they do not car where the content comes from... |

If a blu ray is damaged you just buy another one. Thankfully that day will likely never come because studios earn so much on physical media incl blu ray. CD's are still here as well. and streaming is way bigger for music. And if one format of the movie media goes it will be DVD's not blu rays Last edited by mredman; 05-02-2014 at 12:39 AM. |
