There is only one winner, no matter how close the race and only the winner can be called great everything else by definition is subpar if one cares for quality. Does it need to be BD? No, but if the BD looks better then how can the loser be qualified as great. We called Alexander the great because he was winning the battles and won a hell of a lot of them, no one calls the people that lost to him great because they are the losers.

PS the issue with calling it great is that someone else could just as reasonably call DVD great and someone else VHS and someone else bad reception in the old analogue days

it just depends how low a standard the person has and what goals they want. As kids growing up every time we asked my dad for cable he would say there is no need for it because the image (like the one above) looks great because he did not want to spend the money on cable.
Is this a joke???? You're not being serious are you? Just pulling our legs, perhaps. Anyway...I got a good laugh out of it. Kinda remind's me of an old TV show featuring a character named Archie Bunker and the old fashioned way he used to think.

I can't remember if it was this thread or an other but the discussion was on HDD sizes needed for movies. MrP said he averages around 40GB/BD movie and that other guy said it is much lower then that because he just DL from illegal sites and they are the BD rips and in some posts he said they look exactly like the BD (which I am wondering when he saw them since why would anyone pirate and buy/rent the same movie) and in other close enough.
That i did, wasn't this thread i don't think but i am sure its been moved in here by now Can't see 10gb being enough for anything i would consider HD, lol, as for MrP (if thats who it was) would love to have that set up. I do like the concept of streaming instead of cable/renting, but hope the quality increases.

I don't even like the concept of streaming. Waiting a few years for quality that will equal Bluray?......Why?

I will always want to look at my collection and hold a Bluray in my hand. The fear for people who love this superior Bluray technology is that we will have to put up with a future of shoddy downloads and our every move and purchase being watched/monitored. Who in their right minds would want such a thing. I know we are probably talking a few years in the future but this cannot be allowed to happen. Its mad to even think that people would want to re-purchase their collection in inferior quality. This makes no sense to me.
This younger generation should get back to watching films at the cinema and then waiting a few months for a superb looking home version. That is the excitement for me. Watching certain scenes and thinking how great they would look on bluray. That thought pattern wouldn't even exist in a digital download future.
I think it is important that all Bluray fans unite and let people know the benefits of Bluray!!! Educate the clueless folk out there that a film should be experienced in glorious hi def not shoddy, pixelated, ugly 'convenient' downloads.

I take it you don't watch cable, satellite, or any of the many movies and tv shows that are not yet available on blu-ray? I am not always in the mood for a movie, and when i want to watch a tv show, documentary etc.... i would rather have the options streaming services/vod provides, rather then channel surf on cable. Its not an all or nothing type of deal. Getting streaming does not mean you can't still enjoy blu-ray.

I have a pvr box from a top company in Uk. I watch sports (football) and occasional tv shows and the odd movie. There is no need for streaming for me personally.
Also many people in the Uk don't have very fast connections and streaming would be a pain for many.
New films i always watch on Bluray. Films are a big part of my entertainment and there is nothing like watching a new Bluray on a Plasma with surround sound.

I have always held the position that streaming is no threat to hard media, because studios will market to both consumer-types. With the prolific explosion of handheld palm and pad devices streaming continues to grow in demand.

While there is nothing like watching a movie on blu-ray on a big screen TV in the comfort of home, streaming it from a pad device to a TV isn't such a bad option when you are stuck in a hotel room.

I find it hilarious what is happening with certain networks and storage sytems in the last few weeks. Further reason, I believe, that cloud based storage and online access in general is not just unreliable, but in my opinion a security risk to users. Also imagine having to go a week or longer without watching the latest films. No such problem with Blurays.

Online future? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!

agree. I don't particularly hate the idea of DL, I don't care about the media used. But cloud tech I am not interested in at all. I am a buyer and as such I want my film physically at my home.

This whole PSN farce has proved that Digital Download will not be the future for a very long time. A lot of people will have lost trust in online systems. No doubt about that. You can't beat media that you can hold in your hand.

Blu-ray rocks!

This is a silly theory. Thats like saying how can 1080p be much better than 576i. The difference between 1080 to 4000 is greater than 576i to 1080p in terms of resolution.
You're comparing the number of lines of 1080p with the number of pixels across in 4K. 4K is only around 2160p.

Steam has 4 times as many members, real members btw, then PSN has memberships. DD is only getting bigger and better. This past incident is one of the reasons its going to get better in the future, learning along the way.

My bad. Well, I heard it on a show on gaming. It made sense because they were talking about their huge revenue stream. This was the article they referenced. Valve And Steam Worth Billions

How? 70 million people, not to mention all those people that have read about it and seen reports on tv? Many people who were unsure about downloads at present are certainly not going to be too keen now are they?

So you do not think the PSN thing will have any impact on digital downloads?
Or are you a download fanboy, and if that is the case why are you posting on a Bluray forum?

For the same reason you cannot compare MP3/CD performance to home video performance, you cannot compare purchased downloads of video games. They're totally separate concepts. Even if physical media for video games somehow evaporated overnight, it'd still stick around for books, film, and music. In general, people like physical media, and it'll have a place in mainstream media consumption for a long time to come.

Yeah when first week sales(when real volume is sold) of releases reach 40% or more, which is happening more and more often, it's not too hard to see that the format will be with us for the long haul. Also can't forget the 65% and 68% that Inception and Tron did nor the Blu-ray of Bambi topping the DVD charts as well.

There are two different ways to use digital instead of physical. The more common one is you dl the exact same version to your HD. The future may be cloud computing where the game is run on a central computer you log on from dozens of different kinds devices to access and play, you are no longer tied to your console or computer, you can play on both along with your iPad, cell phone, etc.. Right now, more people dl their PC games then getting the exact same version on a disc. There is NO difference in a dl version of a game and a disc version of the same console game either such as SOCOM: Confrontation, Gran Turismo Prologue, Warhawk. No difference AT All. Well there is a difference. If you broke your disc, you'd have to buy another copy of the game. You can always re-download your digital copy from the PS Store if something happens to your PS3 or you buy another or go to a friends to play the game you log in with your account and DL and play it. If you bought Portal 2 for the PS3, you get a free DL copy of the exact same game for Steam on your PC. Steam is trying to get people who think like you to experience how easy it is to dl the same version of a game. Also, digital books now outsell real books. Digital music will outsell CDs this year. NetFlix, which now has more subscribers then Comcast, now spends more money on streaming rights then buying physical DVDs/Blu-rays.On the PS3 you can stream 1080p/ 5.1, just like Blu-ray. Dish Network just bought Blockbuster for its streaming rights along with another company that has streaming technology. All this is in the news.

Currently u cannot stream lossless audio just like a blu-ray from any legal source, so that part of your statement is false for starters.
