I understand your position . I read the Deadline article earlier this morning and it was obvious to me it was flawed as the author's intent is to promote his personal opinion/agenda and not to report on the actual NPD findings or at least to provide complete information and letting the readers decide. I track Blu-ray sales and box office information as much as any movie fan. The theatrical release schedule and the home video new release schedule for the beginning of 2011 was weak (overall). Summer box office is going to be really strong and Q4 Blu-ray sales will set all kinds of records...and I can state that with a lot of confidence.

I think his interpretation is way off base. Having said that, I do agree that the studios probably are disappointed with BD sales because the growth rates have slowed considerably. BD sales are running only 10% ahead of last year (in dollars). (However, considering that prices have dropped, that's actually not bad because it implies that units could be ahead by 15%.) And unfortunately, BD sales are not making up for the declines in DVD sales.

Even though BD $ sales (in the U.S.) are currently running only 10% ahead of last year, I think the numbers will really pick up once Star Wars and the latest Lord of The Rings versions are released. I think there are still an awful lot of people who don't know what Blu-ray is (my ex among them) and Star Wars will wake a lot of those people up.

The sluggish economy is also a factor, although people tend to stay home when they don't have a lot of spare cash and if you have a family, a $130 BD player and a $20 BD (and many catalog titles now sell for as little as $7) is actually a pretty cheap night of entertainment. (In my neck of the woods, a couple taking two kids to the movies, including public transportation but not including snacks, would cost around $63. Throw in a soda and popcorn for each kid (but not the adults) and we're talking at least $77.)

On the other hand, BD is competing with people who invested instead in things like iPads (of which 24 million have been sold in 14 months). And people with iPads will primarily be downloading movies or viewing alternative content instead.

1. Different product categories entirely? So no direct competition in the ordinary sense? Cp.: "Breweries compete with people [i.e., compete for their business] who invested instead in refrigerated wine cellars. And people with wine cellars will primarily be drinking wine instead."

2. What % of iPad owners own a BD player? How many BDs per capita does the iPad owner buy annually? How many does he rent? When he wants to own content, as opposed to rent it, where does he go?

It would help if the retailers would carry more Blu-ray titles and less DVD's. Another thing is sticking a DVD in with the Blu-ray so that the price is $8-$10 more than it should be. If I wanted a DVD I would buy a DVD!

In all seriousness here's an interesting piece of info I gathered from my local Best Buy. I went in last weekend to get a copy of Get Shorty on BD(pretty good btw), and it had been several months since my last visit. I noticed the movie section was not up front, but more to the rear of the store. Thinking this odd, I asked a manager about the move. He said that movies have been their topselling product since the beginning of the year and they wanted to move the display to the rear so that you HAD to walk through misc tech gear to get there. Take it for what it's worth, but I was kind of surprised.

Nothing is making up for the decline in DVD sales, but Blu-Ray is doing the best at it. As a result, while you might be disappointed that overall sales are declining, being disappointed directly in Blu-Ray sales would be stupid and shortsighted. What's the replacement? Digital Downloads (which are growing even slower than Blu-Ray?). Killing ALL movie sales? Going to yet another movie format?

Do yourself a favor and don't read the comments on the consumerist.com article. Complaints range from dumb to dumber and I quote:

"Maybe the fact that you have a 50-50 chance of a new blu-ray disc working in your machine is keeping people from adopting the technology"

My blu-ray player plays at least 60-70% of my blu-rays.

So DVDs don't have previews on them anymore?

Ummm... just curious if someone could tell me, since I really wasn't aware of DVD until it started hitting my hometown, which meant it had already penetrated the market. But did DVD have as much hate and nonsense written about it that Blu-ray does now when DVD was released? No big long explanation needed I'm just wondering... I DO remember the "You can't record onto a DVD so it'll never take off" then boom there were DVD burners being released...

The difference when DVD was released was that there were no web-based forums like this one where any idiot (like me) can express a personal opinion, not support it with facts and expect people to accept it.

And there was no such thing as a troll (except for a few of my friends and relatives ....oh yeah and my ex-wife).

Actually, DVD was the most successful consumer electronics launch ever, but things have changed drastically since, as the pace of adoption is much faster. DVD reached 1 million hardware units in 21 months. By comparison, it took satellite radio 23 months, CD players 28 months, MP3 players 28 months, radio 39 months, TV 40 months, DVRs 53 months, VCRs 58 months and cable/satellite TV 144 months. (All numbers from Greystone Communications, the Yankee Group, but I will confess that I don't know whether those are U.S domestic numbers or worldwide numbers).

But have times changed. It took Apple only 28 days to sell 1 million iPads and in 14 months they've sold 25 million (worldwide).

DVD had the lucky combination to be both much higher quality than consumer formats like VHS and niche formats like laserdisc and also be incredibly convenient. I frequently maintain (to the disagreement of many on these forums) that consumers almost always choose convenience over quality, but DVD had both.

While BD has higher quality, it's exactly as convenient, but with increased competition from both other leisure time activities and downloads/streaming, its growth rate is a bit slower. Year over year to date, BD is only 10% ahead of 2010. The bad economy probably isn't helping either.

Yes. Obviously Star Wars will sell some discs (but even that won't be the 'run out and finally buy a player' killer app some people make it out to be) but disposable income is going to be the biggest factor in the growth (or not) of all types of entertainment spending and that doesn't appear to be going anywhere in the next six months.
