Too the masses, it's good enough. You're not grasping that they don't care enough about the perceived quality loss.

This is true, but after talking to more than a few not too tech savy people they all say that streaming can be aggravating with buffering, bluryness when the speed drops, or loss of internet altogether. While most aren't saying they'd rather buy blu-rays they are still saying that they would rather watch a form of physical media that is garaunteed a full play through without any issues arising.

Blu-ray is making steady progress over time. The studios and retailers are not in any hurry to kill of DVD sales as they are still high margin and make billions of dollars in sales.

Some genres of titles don't make a lot of sense to release on Blu-ray as do theatrical movies and Blu-ray players are DVD players too so DVD releases still make sense for many titles as they can service both the DVD and Blu-ray ownership base.

Agree, I think most of this nonsense comes from people that never paid attention (you know the guy that bought his DVD player in 2004 or 2003 or any late adopter, and then did not really pay attention to VHS and then saw that BD showed up and got POed that he will need to upgrade so soon).

This are the simple facts

- 1996/1997 DVD came out depending on where in the world you lived
- 2002 The BDF got formed and started serious work on the next generation format with 405nm laser reading at .1mm data depth
- 2005/2006 the last VHS releases from major studios were released
- 2006 BD came out (~mid year)

This was the reality for DVD and it was the fastest picked up format when it launched.

now we are 2012 and some people are making a big fuss and asking about the death of BD because there is some discussion about 4K (even though there is no equivalent to the BDF yet to support it) and others that BD is doomed because DVD is still around.

Weird! Most people are going gaga over flat screen HDTVs, yet they don't want to get the most out of it. Very odd!

I think a lot of that has to do with CRTs no longer being in production though.

Default Roku CEO: "Blu ray will be obsolete by 2016"

Quote:
By 2016, owning a Blu-ray player will be irrelevant, says the head of a company whose future relevance is also up for debate.

At an event in San Francisco called the "TV of Tomorrow" show, Roku CEO Anthony Wood opined, "Will people use Blu-ray players in four years? I don’t think so."
You can't help but feel bad for all the people who have a financial stake in the Blu-ray Disc medium. When it first launched, it had to engage in a battle to the death with rival format HD DVD.

And then, just as its acceptance started to become widespread, the digital distribution market just exploded right in its face.

Now, an ambitious player in that digital market sees a slow death for Blu-ray.

Of course, Wood hardly has a vested interest in hoping that Blu-ray will succeed so he brings to the table a partisan viewpoint. Nevertheless, he believes that Roku will have a life that exceeds Blu-ray players, even though there is some doubt about that within the streaming world as well.

For Wood, the question is whether or not dedicated set-top boxes - devices that customers need to buy in order to access services like Netflix and Hulu on their TVs - will be relevant in a few years.

The majority of American households now have a video game console, which are perfectly capable of delivering the same kind of digital content. In addition, Internet-connected TV sets are on the rise, negating the need for something extra that you need to plug into your TV.

As such, Roku kind of faces the same problem as Blu-ray players, so Wood's comments might be kind of hypocritical. But we'll have to see how the market plays out.
This guy is delusional.

Sorry, but I will always prefer to have the physical media over digital downloads.

Bluray will be irrelevant IF streaming/downloading can offer 25-40 mbps 1080p quality and people suddenly decide they hate collecting movies. Until then, Bluray all the way. Besides i have a backlog of around 300 bluray discs so i will make it last regardless!

I don't own a roku.

still,... no way roku is going to make it to 2015.

Eventually, public will know that you can get everything from a roku on any computer and most computers can mirror to HDTVs and stuff easily.

Cds still live on ... since what 1980 something. DVDs are still popular even though blu is better in every single way. How can anyone suggest Blus will be gone in a few years... that fella is just stupid.

-Brian

This would be similar Bill Gates saying back in 2004, that dvds would become obsolete in a decade.

Perhaps he accurately foresaw the rabid 'die, dvd, die' contingent in our own midst. Though if he did he seems to have overestimated their effectiveness

As penton man pointed out in the 4K thread, 4KBD will ensure BD stays stays around for a long time. It means the continuation of physical media.

Not that current BD needs it to survive but it's a good thing to see they have plans for it in the future.

For me, A/V quality is of major importance, but have the PHYSICAL media is honestly just as important! If someday streaming could offer a higher quality A/V experience than whatever physical media is available, then yes, I will enjoy it, but I will still and ALWAYS be a physical media fellow... Same with books, I will get an e-book every now and then... but for me, nothing beats that old paper smell and 100 books lining my shelf!

It kinda frightens me, what Bhampton stated is true - the properties of a Roku can be ported over to a HDTV quite easily - as a matter of fact they all ready are (smart TV's). What frightens me is Joe Sixpack's desire for convenience over quality.

Roku is not the only company that's giving BD's and other physical media 4 to 5 years of life left. It was the content providers that drove BD and now they are looking at profits going down through piracy, rentals ect, the content owners want a larger share of the pie. The bottom line with them is not quality - it's profits. Although BD is growing, streaming is growing at a faster pace (poor quality at that )!!!! This is the scarry thing - more people that I know have a roku, wd box, boxee, ect than have BD players! Thats down right pathetic! Women are buying into the Roku ideal at a rapid pace - the box is small - wireless in some cases and simple to operate. My sister was in town and she asked me could we watch Red Tail without the "boom - bang" she wanted me to turn the subs off!!!! My brothers looked at me and I looked at them and we looked back at her!!! She said she doesn't need all that to enjoy a movie - just give her the picture and the dialogue and she's fine!!!

This is what BD is up against, the audiophile world is embracing computer audio now because they are offering better resolutions and true audiophile sound - you can hardly find a room at a show that doesn't feature computer based audio - serving up high quality music tracks - no physical media.
The majority of the movie watching public are not video/audiophiles - a lot of them just don't care. There's a thread at Home Theater Magazine about streaming DTS-HD and TrueHD http://www.hometheater.com/content/s...d-dolby-truehd
look at some of the comments - this is getting serious folks.

So to conclude - yes there is a bit of worry - I'm spoiled, I like my lossless audio most of all (they will always give us HD pictures - because mainly we are sight driven). What it really means to go to no physical media - means no more lossless audio for movies - just some "good enough" sceme like DD+. If that day comes - and they don't supply HD audio with movie streams, and no alternative like BD, I will sell the majority of my system - buy a pair of Khorns or Pendragons, and go strictly 2 channel music (because they provide lossless audio), I can wait for the blockbuster movies to come out on FXmovies - what...its the same thing as streaming you just have to wait a little longer for it to come out.

Well, everyone in the business isn't excited about 4K here's one take from Geoffery Morrison's Blog on Cnet http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7...nt;contentBody

Is he right?

With Vudu rumored to be coming to UK, i am very worried for bluray. the quality will still be nowhere near bluray, but apparently it is an upgrade on current quality and that may be good enough for most.
