Rental has always been the way the masses have consumed films at home? The difference now is some will be streaming them rather than paying for a HBO sub.

HBO boss sees Netflix as competition. The comments there make interesting reading; it's clear that streaming will kill cable before anything else. No debate required, it's happening.

*gasp... you mean actually have patience!!!! my GOD!!! how shocking... /sarcasm

this bunch of young "have to have it now!!!!" mentality generation is absolutely sickening

we'er living in a society where anyone under the age of 30 has no ability or desire to read or do anything that takes any form of patience due to them growing up in a world where they have zero attention span and live in a world where INSTANT gratification is key... a society where appreciation of arts and well...anything has been so devalued that they have become a world of fleas who hop from one "high" to the next too scared to slow down and smell the roses

And you have the stats to back this claim?

It'll outlive Apple TV, and that's a fact.

Well, I like the idea that I can come home at 1AM and turn on my Apple TV and select the movie I want to watch, click rent and no fuss, no muss a few seconds later I am watching my movie in crystal clear 1080p quality.

Waiting for a movie just sucks!!!!

it's pure psychology. research "the ownership dilemma". it's a psch study that breaks down the mentality of people when they choose to own or rent anything. the breakdown was that Renters were 10 x more likely to move around often to the latest and greatest item in their bracket than an owner. This covers a broad spectrum of items such as cars, films, houses, electronics etc.

So do I with Netflix. There's no way I'd be daft enough to think it was a replacement for a film collection though, although it is a replacement for a cable sub.

Waiting for a blu ray to come in or be available at your local redbox is such outdated thinking, it has nothing to do with the current generation, I know people who are over 70 who have no trouble whatsoever streaming on Netflix, and I also know that my 8 year old nephew reads on an ereader, its called progress and keeping up with the times. Renting an iTunes 1080p is far superior than having to wait for a blu ray to arrive in the mail. I have the option to stream in good quality, why would I not want to do it? Attention span has nothing to do with, I could be doing other things than having to make a reservation and then drive 10 miles to a redbox...oh yeah, then I need to drive back to drop it off...l't ets just hope that Redbox is 24hrs or outdoors or I won't be able to watch my movies late in the night.

I think you've just misunderstood his case as you keep proving his point.

Why don't you just join the apple forums. It would make far more sense than arguing with seasoned home cinema fans. Apple TV is not and never will be a substitute for bluray. Got it?

I am a seasoned home cinema user/owner, and I probably have more experience in home cinema that you.

As for Apple TV, it offers 1080p and the quality IS an alternative to blu ray.

whatever you say buddy, whatever you say. convenience OVER quality (and yes, even you have said the blu-ray IS superior in quality) is called laziness or apathy.

lol, I love how you constantly tout how much "experience" or how "superb" your setup is yet you dodge every question about your setup OR your credentials. It makes you VERY shady and looking like a troll every time you open your mouth.

blu ray has a higher quality image, no doubt, however iTunes off an Apple TV offers a good enough alternative that one no longer needs to buy expensive physical media to enjoy a 1080p picture.
