Default Sub $100 HD DVD Player

$98.87 this Friday at Walmart. This is what the BDA is up against now. (Sure it's one day, it's a discountinued model, and quantities will be limited, but expect more of this). Also note the HD DVD discs on sale. Time for BDA to step it up.

Thanks for the info. They will clear out at that price since it costs slightly more then a upconverted 1080I player. It would be ideal if BLU-RAY could get to the $199.99 price for a 1080P player. Or at least a $299.99 price for a 1080P player. The problem is these Toshiba’s are bad quality since they only do 720P and 1080I. One needs to compare the 1080P HD-DVD player prices to 1080P BLU-RAY players to make the price game fair.

That's not really true. 1080i output to a decent 1080P set will look the same. There's plenty of articles on this all over the net.

Sony should really put out a 1080i blu-ray player. Although I wonder how much of a cost difference it would make.

I never set foot in a walmart or a k-mart but you think I wouldn't go there just to take advantage of this $199 player? Keep dreaming.

As I said, at this point Toshiba is too determined and it shows through their actions. Come April '08 they'll probably be selling these players for less than $150 everywhere and that's when the BDA will really have to pack up and go home.
and you are right now the HDM buyer..but most of the J6P consumers are not that's the point.

and that same guy is a HDM buyer..what % of shoppers are HDM buyers right now in the US when just in the cost of GAS to fill up you car takes $30.00+ for the week that a single movie cost's the same on HDM..ask people off the street in the US if they want to pay $30.00 per movie that..even with extras most would say hell no way am i paying that.you can lower the cost of the player's but its the disc sales that matter to the studios...you may say future buyers of the formats disc's..you know what it is future buyers of the formats disc's..how long can HDM last with a split in studio support...even if Warner Bros. would go HD DVD exclusive how much longer will this stretch out until people just give up..? but here is the thing what happens to HD DVD its not in other markets. the price of their player is so cheap Toshiba pushed out all other CE companies they could not make any proffit off of HD DVD players .

thats why there is a 10 to 1 HARDWARE CE support for Blu-Ray over
HD DVD...

so what happens to Blu-Ray and HD DVD NICHE MARKET..only for HD DVD why because its not just about the MOVIE industry for the BDA its about the entire industry a disc sale is a disc sale. without the movie market HD DVD goes where data back up..? Blu-Ray is cheaper per GB than HD DVD. SOFTWARE..?..ONCE AGAIN BY THE TIME THIS IS FINISHED Blu-Ray will already be the defacto HD optical software format to go right along with CD, and DVD
WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE HD DVD...?

is it just me but isn't it the same old story. A format is about to die so comes out with a ultra cheap player that sucks. happened with beta and divx. this looks like the end to me .

It is better to feed the display 1080P/24 since that is what is native on the disk. There are still many displays that throw out half the resolution when de-interlacing 1080I to 1080P.

Man, are you smokin' stuff?
You probably mean $198 right? Because $98 is the price of a good DVD player these days.

And it has already been said by insiders that they are using this price tag to get rid of the old A-2's while creating the idea that Toshiba is more affordable (the A-3, except for Black Friday, is priced at $299 I think).

P.S: Sorry, just saw the Wallmart advertisement for $98.

This is ... beyond ridiculous I have to say. Wonder how much stock they have of those. Because let's be real.
If they can deliver on demand (and not in a limited 50k number type like that has been suggested), this is game over.
They would sell a million of those in a matter of weeks.

Me too. I still believe Blu-ray will win the HD war, but until then there are alot of movies missed out on the other side. And who knows when is that "then"?

Well, at least we know that, aside from possible combo players, no mainstream CE company that makes BR units will ever make a stand alone HD DVD player.

Why would they bother at this point? The product has been completely de-vauled after 18 months.

I have to somewhat admire Toshiba going for the Razor/Razor Blades marketing method. Unless you suffer from alopica, you'll always need to buy razor blades.

Unlike razor blades, consumer don't have to actually buy HDM's to get use out of their player.
