What are your thoughts on the quality of digital media?

As a final post on this topic may I offer my thoughts? Digital media is fine for throwaway tv and films that you are undecided about. The quality is similar to DVD but with hd colours if that makes sense. The banding and blocking I used to see and get agitated by is still very visible with streaming media. Therefore, it is in my opinion, a poor way to watch movies and I only resort to it to catch TV and the odd film I may have missed. Bluray looks a thousand times better and everyone knows it. On a small tv streaming may look ok, but blow that image up and Kansas is going bye bye!

For ownership, I would rather own a disc on blu ray if i want to own the movie. But with Apple TV,I have moved on from the idea that I need to own a movie to be able to watch it. If I really like the movie I would rather own the movie on disc as storing it in the cloud is not as fun as having the disc. I still like the packaging of laserdisc and DVD over blu ray as I hate the idea of the blue part of almost every blu ray made. Blu ray packaging is boring. All in all, I am glad we have the options we do, I might actually give redbox a try this week as they are opening up a new location closer to my home. Too bad the shopping plaza next door does not have one yet. |

The primary posting logic is the purposeful elicitation of a reply from others….the easiest vehicle to that end is to criticize, diminish or in some way marginalize Blu-ray on a forum devoted to Blu-ray enthusiasm.

By the way, was I right about the football ground in your link? Or we're you enquiring rather than already knowing the answer? |

Because it sort of makes me question if I still want to keep collecting Blu-rays. I know that Netflix can't compete with Blu-ray when it comes to audio, but not all movies have dynamic audio that you would need lossless audio for everything.
I was watching How to Murder your Wife (1965) on Netflix in HD, or as they now call it "Super HD", and I had the resolution setting set to 1080p thinking it was a 720p image upscaled to 1080p. I kept thinking to myself "This looks too good for a Netflix movie." A lot of detail, the colors were good, deep blacks, etc. So I googled "Netflix 1080p" and to my surprise, it's true. Netflix now streams their HD movies in 1080p, or to be politically correct "Super HD". Now I feel conflicted. I love owning the physical format of a movie but I don't love throwing money away if the difference is becoming less dramatic. Don't get me wrong, I love Blu-rays but the digital, non-physical copy, streaming video is somewhat owning the demand for physical disks.... If you're happy with how it looks, then what's the problem?
From my viewing distance no online stream could possibly compete with a well-mastered blu-ray, but if your setup is less demanding, it's quite possible that streaming is good enough visually. |

I've gotten a lot more realistic in terms of how often do I REALLY watch the movies that I buy, and if it's an older movie available on Netflix or Amazon streaming in HD, that's usually sufficient for me. I honestly have so much stuff going on right now that I'm just happy if I have time to watch a movie, so I don't really bother critiquing a/v much anymore. I'm becoming a big fan of Redbox as well.
There are certain movies I'll pretty much always buy, ie comic book movies and catalog titles I just have to have, but my collecting of Blu-rays has almost been completely replaced by other things. |

Yeah, I think it's getting better. But Netflix doesn't have every titles you want. And I LOVE special features too much to give up the blu-ray yet. Plus, I personally love displaying my collections too. It gives me certain pride that streaming can't offer.

As for the op, Netflix has saved me some money, but has also made me spend some on Blu-rays too. With SuperHD, movies stream in full 1080P.. It's definitely not as good as Blu-ray, but with some movies that I'm on the fence about, it'll probably sway me towards streaming it, than buying it.
I've watched a lot of stuff on Netflix that I wouldn't just outright buy. Stuff like "Jeff who lives at home" and the 1984 version of Metropolis. But after seeing both, I want them to be in my physical collection too. I see Netflix, and even Ultraviolet as merely a compliment to my physical collection. I use Netflix primarily for their TV shows. Stuff like Breaking Bad, Archer, Portlania, Walking Dead, etc.. The quality is just fine for me, and I can save money, and space by not needing to buy them all to watch them (I got rid of cable). It's also way easier to just turn on the PS3 and decide which show I feel like watching, than going through various shows' seasons to pick the disc every night. |
