Most movies on Netflix only go up to 720p. The stuff I found to be 1080p were the IMAX 40 minute documentaries.

I apologize for this thread.

The "Supe rHD" thing is fairly recent so I'm sure they'll be increasing the amount that support it eventually. I know quite a few older catalog titles are in Super HD, and some recent ones like The Lorax, and Act of Valor are as well

edit: Just anecdotal stuff, but 6 of the 10 in my list above are in Super HD.

Man, some straight up trolling in this thread right now. Netflix has amazing content that is only going to get better with them having exclusive first run movies from Disney and other stuff. I would post my the top 150 of my Netflix Queue to make the trolls in the thread eat crow but meh, trolls will still troll list or no list, im looking at your wormraper.

It doesn't even matter whats on Netflix. Who knows if Netflix will exist in 5,10,20 years from now, that's why it's owning a movie is so much better than relying on Netflix to watch it again.

I agree there. Even some stuff on Netflix now isn't guaranteed to be there within 6 months. Stuff are constantly being removed or replaced with other titles based on licensing deals ending, etc..

I agree. Netflix is not great.
The only thing I ever watch is Freaks + Geeks because the box set is so damn expensive. Also, I sometimes will watch a movie on there but for the most part. I rarely ever use it. I think I should just cancel it or at least have my friends who use it pay partial since they use it more than I do.

No, just more newbies who STILL think Netflix sits in a back room and digitizes all their own movies.

The fact is, all the streaming sites, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and Vudu (maybe not Crackle) are at the mercy of whatever titles are licensed by the content owners, and just sell it on whatever streetcorner they own. Which is why you tend to find that 80-85% of streaming sites' catalogs are exactly the same.
In Cheap Horror's case, it's because indie labels have started bypassing the video store and arthouse theater, and pitched their little struggling-filmmaker movies directly toward the streaming/download market. Remember those "After Dark" festivals a few years back, when foreign-import and micro-indie horrors used to be shown at special-engagement runs in theaters?...They don't do that no more. Because they think they don't have to, and most cineplex chains are only too happy to keep room for the "real" films that make money. And that was back when it was just one company doing it.
(Unfortunately, that also applies to made-for-cable indies, which is why The Asylum goes running to Netflix the minute they have a new title available, or three, or ten. Yeah, that's the Lincoln ripoff.)

So, it just comes down to a question of which company has the highest percentage of "real" mainstream studio-licensed films and series You've Actually Heard Of.
Netflix is up near the top with Amazon, getting the occasional Real movie, although they can be deluged with Korean K-drama, gay-cinema indies, struggling leftwing indie documentaries (1 out of 3 of them being pro-legalization) and other such wannabes trying to find a voice in the wilderness.
Playstation Network USED to have a nice catalog of current and classic studio films five years ago, but now has been completely taken over by the struggling-indie market. And outside of their deal with Criterion, Hulu Plus+'s movie section is a near non-existent wasteland of public-domain and itinerant struggling indies.

Fortunately, they still have TV reruns. And as long as there's a good percentage of "real" studio-licensed classic reruns on Netflix to go with a good percentage of "real" studio-licensed movies at a one-price charge, I'm not going back to cable TV in any hurry.

lol, really. so a few hundred movies on your queue make up for HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS of dtv crap on netflix??? netflix has it's place, and ever since they lost the studio contracts and starz stuff they've been MAINLY relegated to tv shows and indie films just like Amazon and hulu have. just because they have SOME decent stuff doesn't mean that they are some powerhouse of content all of a sudden. The OP was wondering if netflix was a viable alternative to physical disc, and I was pointing out that unless he was into Indie stuff, or tv shows only he had VERY limited content to choose from in comparison.

(that and I think someone has a weird definition of "trolling")

I like streaming AND Blu. In fact, I think they complement one another quite well. If push came to shove and I had to choose just one, then it would be BLU.

But for me, they can co-exist quite well together. BLU is of course great for the incredible PQ, the special features and the fact that I don't have to rely on an internet connection to watch a movie.

NF is very convenient. It's nice having a lof of movies at my fingertips. Sometimes I'll watch a movie on NF that I already own on BLU.

For me, the biggest drawback to NF is that films aren't available forever. Many films are only licensed to be streamed for x amount of time. A few months ago, a bunch of movies expired in my queue. Thankfully, I had those movies on BLU as well, but if I'd just relied on streaming, then I'd be SOOL.

You need to learn the definition of troll. Just because someone has an opposing opinion, doesn't make them a troll. It just means...

They have an opposing opinion.

Vudu has some bad transfers though, particularly Universal films -- some Universal stuff looks great in HDX like Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, whereas Weird Science is a DNR'd mess, so I guess it comes down to what Universal sends over. Does not bode well for a Weird Science Blu-ray

I definitely get my 7.99's worth out of Netflix every month but it's never going to replace my blu-rays, regardless of how the quality may be improving. The two co-exist just fine in my world.

I've bought more movies since I got Netflix. Try it out streamed and if its good, it ends up in the collection. There's no reason why one has to replace the other anymore. Netflix is just an extra TV channel as far as we're concerned.

I'm only in the States for less than a year and then live mostly overseas for the next 3-4. So for me Netflix is an inexpensive alternative to subscribing to cable for TV shows. The kids have a good selection of age appropriate cartoons and they can devote a month to an entire series and catch it from the first to last episode.

But I would never use Netflix as an alternative to having my own movie collection. I prefer the picture and audio quality of my blu-rays (and even upconverted DVDs), the lasting selection in my library and the ability to be independent of an Internet connection. I can take my library with me overseas where Netflx isn't an option.

why would you want to stop collecting movies?? its not like netflix is your unlimited cloud library storage...movies are under contract and licensing and disappear and reappear from time to time.

I still have a big problem with streaming. With physical media I can own the worst movie in the world and not worry about it, streaming is like a trap, if I purchase on iTunes I can't watch on other devices, if I buy on Vudu, I'm worry they might take it down. And I still don't understand why Digital Copies has expiration date.
I'm not the type that avoids new technology, I'm mostly try and embrace, but I still don't trust streaming.
