I get my money's worth from Netflix, but only because my daughter watches Netflix in her room before bed every night and it really is great for her. I can't imagine being 5 and having all of my shows right there on-demand.

As far as replacing my Blu's...never. My internet speed is the highest for our area, but it is still not good. It still takes a bit for the HD to kick in when you start a show on Netflix. We live in a rural area and have been through every tyoe of internet offered. DSL is our best bet. It doesn't help that our iPhones have to run through the DSL as well for us to make calls. Bandwidth is very limited in my house. My Blu-rays could never be replaced...plus, collecting would go away if Netflix had everything, but once you start looking around in Netflix you see that they have a very limited amount.

I've watched a lot of stuff on Netflix that I wouldn't just outright buy. Stuff like "Jeff who lives at home" and the 1984 version of Metropolis. But after seeing both, I want them to be in my physical collection too.

I see Netflix, and even Ultraviolet as merely a compliment to my physical collection. I use Netflix primarily for their TV shows. Stuff like Breaking Bad, Archer, Portlania, Walking Dead, etc.. The quality is just fine for me, and I can save money, and space by not needing to buy them all to watch them (I got rid of cable). It's also way easier to just turn on the PS3 and decide which show I feel like watching, than going through various shows' seasons to pick the disc every night.
This is pretty much my view as well, I use Netflix as a companion to my collection... However I will never go strictly streaming for several reasons:

1. My biggest complaint about Netflix and other streaming services is their habit of removing stuff. For example, I somehow stumbled across Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and watched it several times, and then, went to go watch it one day, and it was suddenly unavailable.... That will never happen with my collection.
2. Lack of lossless audio. I don't really think there's much that needs to be said here, if you have a proper sound system, watch the same movie on Netflix and blu-ray, and it will BLOW YOU AWAY.
3. The collector in me. I look at my collection, and it's a library of the things I love.

(Unfortunately, that also applies to made-for-cable indies, which is why The Asylum goes running to Netflix the minute they have a new title available, or three, or ten. Yeah, that's the Lincoln ripoff.)

I wouldn't call the After Dark films cheap horror crap (except for Captivity), the first couple series were quite good IMO.

BTW, that's not the Lincoln ripoff, it's the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ripoff! Hard to keep em straight with Asylum I know, but that streeted when AL:VH hit theaters.

As a European, a subscription to a DNS service like unblock-us.com added a lot to the value of Netflix. I now can switch between all the different local Netflix services freely (and legally). There's a great difference in what is available at any given time on the Scandinavian, the UK, or even between the the US and Canadian servers.

Netflix has greatly changed my buying habits. A lot of movies are never released here, so before I got Netflix and unblock-us I would buy a lot of movies that I had only a casual interest in. Because hat would often be the only way for me to watch them. Now, I tend to only buy the movies that I know I really want to own.

Would I completely stop buying physical copies because of Netflix? No. Since titles also disappear from Netflix when their license expires, I don't see it replacing my physical collection any time soon. But for me, at least, Netflix is a great supplement.

There's more to it than that. While I don't have the exact tech specs, there's far greater compression on Netflix (right?) or any of the streaming services than on a Blu-ray. There's far more to picture quality than resolution.

Some cable stations broadcast in 1080i (most in 720p though), but if you compare a basic cable station with a pay cable station like HBO, the quality on HBO is generally much higher.

The other issue is bandwidth. While I have much higher speeds than any of the streaming services require for their highest level of quality, I don't think I've ever watched a movie via streaming on my TV (through the BD player) that didn't have some kind of buffering problem at least once during the film. For a movie I don't care about, fine (although it still pisses me off if I paid anything to see it). But for a movie I care about and that I'll watch again, it's BD for me.

Is there anyway to get a list of all the movies available on netflix? I'm tired of constantly seeing the same list of movies for the most part in my genres, because you watched ect ect.

There are some good comparisons between itunes, vudu and Blu-ray on avsforum. Funny thing is how much better itunes 720p look than itunes 1080p. 1080p, at twice the pixels a frame, often looks worse than 720p given only a slight increase in bitrate. <sarcasm>What a shocker .</sarcasm>

Life of Pi:
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1460032/li...lu-ray-updated

Argo:
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1459687/ar...udu-vs-blu-ray

Skyfall:
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1458077/a-...du-and-blu-ray

Wreck-it-Ralph (just to show that animation compresses easily)
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1462983/wr...du-and-blu-ray

If the above is "TL;DR"ish for you then just go to the Argo screens and click on the picture of the woman's face in closeup.

If you can't see the difference when watching something like Argo on BD versus streaming you need:

1) A larger screen, or
2) A Bigger set, or
3) New prescription glasses, or
4) A combination of the above

Oh and lastly, I've done my own eyball tests between itunes 720p and OTA HDTV broadcasts. I preferred itunes 720p over all but one of the major stations here. HDTV broadcasts in the USA are in a sad sorry pathetic state of affairs.

Netflix will never replace my BDs. I'm a collector. I take a lot of pride in my collections, too. BDs, DVDs, vinyl, CDs...hell, I'm almost at BD# 500. Physical media is always gonna be my thing. There's nothing like owning and holding something in your hands. That's not even taking into account the other reasons why solely relying on Netflix wouldn't be very good for me, like the no-lossless audio.

That being said, I think Netflix is wonderful. I've seen so much on there that I loved that I probably would never have even heard of otherwise. It's terrific and I have never ran out of things to watch. I disagree with there being "80% of crap". That statement is ridiculous. Right now, I have about 870 titles in my queue that I haven't seen yet. I watch movies and add stuff to the queue virtually everyday. Instantwatcher.com is your best friend when it comes to Netflix. Seriously. I can't recommend it enough. It's SO helpful when it comes to finding stuff to watch. It even lists what's going to be expiring about a month in advance. How do I pick what I want to watch? I check what's going to be expiring soon. I look at that and add all the ones I wanna see to the end of the queue, for easy convenience.

Streamingsoon.com is another great site. It lists what's going to be added a month in advance. I can see over a hundred titles I'm going to be watching. Netflix is adding over twenty Cartoon Network and Adult Swim shows on the 30th of this month, too.
I hope these websites are as big a help to others as they are for me.

I was watching how to murder your wife (1965) on netflix in hd, or as they now call it "super hd", and i had the resolution setting set to 1080p thinking it was a 720p image upscaled to 1080p. I kept thinking to myself "this looks too good for a netflix movie." a lot of detail, the colors were good, deep blacks, etc.

So i googled "netflix 1080p" and to my surprise, it's true. Netflix now streams their hd movies in 1080p, or to be politically correct "super hd". Now i feel conflicted. I love owning the physical format of a movie but i don't love throwing money away if the difference is becoming less dramatic. Don't get me wrong, i love blu-rays but the digital, non-physical copy, streaming video is somewhat owning the demand for physical disks....

Edit:
cough...netflix shill....cough

netflix sux and will never be as good as phyiscal media

Yes, this is primarily a BD forum, but the staff leaders don't seem to limit themselves in providing its members with forums outside of that realm. I cannot for the life of me understand this whole, "It has to be one or the other" mentality.

I buy blu-rays and DVD's to watch movies I want to watch. The chances of a movie that I happen to want to watch being on Netflix is about 2%.

I love to queue something up every night that is of my own choosing. Most nights, I go to sleep in front of a disc playing.

Netflix for me fills a niche. I have a toddler grandkid who loves choosing shows (like Dora or Diego) to watch. Animation streams pretty well and a little kid isn't going to be picky about PQ anyway.

I might find an old movie or doc that appeals to me, but I have so much content on Blu-ray to watch and it looks so much better, that I simply don't have time for Netflix streaming. When you have so much high quality programming available on BD with great PQ/AQ, why should I waste my time with anything less? I already own so much, so it's not a money issue as my collection is a sunk cost. The issue is finding enough time to watch what I normally buy, much less finding other stuff to watch that is less appealing in every imaginable way.

Just remember that Netflix will rotate movies in and out of streaming availability. An HD title streamed today may not be next month.

But I agree that the HD looks quite good on Netflix.

The Blu-ray/HD DVD war put BD behind by 4-5 years. Without that silly format war, Blu-ray would be much more entrenched today.
