Blu-ray Archduke

I could have written your first post almost word for word last year. I was late in the game buying a Blu-ray player, and I had a collection of 600-700 DVDs that I had bought from 1999 through 2012.
Since I had been wanting to streamline my DVD collection for a while anyway, I compiled all of my DVDs that had Blu-ray counterparts, and sold them at a couple of used stores in my area. I used the money (roughly a total of $1,500 or so) to upgrade my essential favorites to Blu-ray. Right now, I've got a cool collection where all the fat has been trimmed off, and I'm thinking that I will not need to replace these Blu-rays for years. I know that Jaws, Lawrence of Arabia, and a few others will see the light on 4K at some point. I'm not so sure about some of my other favorites, though, like Westworld, David Lynch's Dune, and such. Methinks my Blu-rays are pretty safe for a while. |

I'll add that I also had some of the same concerns about the physical movie format going entirely to streaming in the near future, but research has convinced me otherwise. There will probably always be a niche market for peeps like us.

Especially considering bandwidth issues, and how HD streaming doesn't even look half as good as blu-ray.

I can understand where the original poster comes from.
Ive gone from VHS to DVD to Blu Ray and there needs to be a full stop at some point and I think Blu Ray is it for myself. 4k releases are inevitable as are digital downloads with cloud storage. However I dont want to rely on cloud storage , weve all had our internet connections go down at some point, how can you access your movies then? Hard drive space at the moment is nowhere near it needs to be for me to store my Blu Ray collection on so Im not interested in copying them to it ( copied 3tb of movies and tv series dvds only to get the seagate click of death ). So I will always go for a physical copy, even though its going to cost me a bomb to ship when i emigrate. |

I personally believe Bluray is the final physical media format. Bluray 4k won't be as popular as regular BDs either (at least from a sales perspective). I think Bluray 4k will be similar to Laserdisc and only attract a certain percentage of the population. Furthermore, I don't think it will catch on because several articles have mentioned the need for an 80" + screen just to enjoy the full potential it offers. I love my Blus and I'm not worried about upgrading to the next format because complete streaming is the next step. Sure, physical media will still be released but I think they will stop at Blu and focus their efforts on streaming down the road. Just my two cents.

Same here. This is not my first rodeo when it comes to collecting movies. I'm a little bit wiser now than I was with VHS and DVD, but not much wiser. The idea of replacing my current collection of Blu-rays is not far-fetched, but it's a daunting prospect. I'd like to think that this is the ultimate format, but I've been around long enough to know better.

All this 4K talk is ridiculous,I have a ton invested in bluray from DVD,It has taken 7 years to get to where i am at and there are still a ton of catalog releases, live concerts,TV shows that i want. I can wait this round and watch 4k prices plumit and than i will ONLY repurchase my favorites like T2,Star wars and new releases only perhaps but ONLY when prices reach current Bluray prices.
Another thing is i would seriously advise all to wait because 8K is closer than you think, they should just skip 4K altogether but you know how it goes, its a business I am totally happy with Bluray and 1080P on my 120" screen |

that is over 16 years time. blu is still maybe around 500. Like I said, I average about 4 a month sometimes more with sales, but I can only spend about a 100 a month.
Also, a lot of my dvd's are gone, sold to fund blu ray. My collection in total is about 200 dvd and 500 blu's. I think when I said limited income, you guys assumed I was poor, just meant my movie budget is smaller compared to some of you Last edited by jbat31; 06-07-2013 at 11:45 PM. |
