To the question raised by the thread, I think there are two significant reasons for blu-ray being adopted more slowly than DVD.

1. People have learned from DVD that that they tended to buy more DVD's than they needed to own. I've talked to many people who say they used to buy DVD's but realized it was stupid if they weren't going to watch them. There are many other ways to watch movies now.

2. It took some of the "slower" people a while to realize they could get a blu-ray player and it would be backward compatible with their DVD's. And they could just start buying blu-rays going forward. I've talked to several people who acted like their entire DVD collection would be useless if they "made the switch" to blu-rays. Yes, people can be slow.

Blu rays are 9 or 15 bucks a pop if you wait a month or whatever. That's cheaper than when DVDs first came out.

Wow! Glad some people are getting the memo... how many years later?

Even if they own just a DVD player, they should buy the blu-rays because the combo automatically comes with a DVD anyways. Plus when you switch you've already got it.

We all figure out things at different paces. I just found out a while ago that you can play 3D discs in a regular player. It plays 2D of course.

3. Didn't that replace VHS which has a limited life expectancy and not durable.
4. Cheap disk so you could keep your favorite movies for a long time with DVD.
5. Blu-ray were more expensive and we learned which movies we really want to re-watch.
6. The DVD generation got older and we don't want to switch anymore.
7. Netflics, iTues portable media. college/high school Kids can get movies for their smartphones or tablets now. They can't buy or see the point in blu-ray.

Even though the sound is greatly improved on Blu-ray, i don't think many people understand or hear a difference. I can tell when we watch a blu-ray on our family room TV that the sound is better but the TV can't reproduce the quality sound. I watch it in our theater and it is amazing but you need to have the sound system to take advantage of it all. Otherwise, DVD quality is good enough for people who don't have the desire or money to buy a good sound system.
You make some really good points. I would like to add that the "ownership" experience is no longer a factor for a lot of buyers. At one time is was interesting to watch the extra stuff on a disc, but I just think people don't care anymore.

I can't buy Star Wars again. I've only bought it on every format.

Amusing in the sense that the original poster hasn’t been to Blu-ray.com for almost 4 months, but I guess Monday morning armchair quarterbacking is a popular endeavor with some.

I heartily agree. Why would I look for a film or program online or through a streaming unit when I would own the physical item??

Even with an expiration date on this format I still see myself enjoying blu ray. If I just want to watch the making of blade runner I'll pop it in and watch it. Some featurettes are just inspiring.if supplemental features take a dive as far as entertainment value (educational, inspirational, what have you) then maybe I would curb collecting discs. I think a lot of johnny come latelies will keep demand strong beyond 2016.

Default blu-ray never obsolete

walmart in the future will only have room to carry only one disc, blu-ray. harddrives will never replace blu-ray, because harddrives fail big time!!!!!!! harddrives will be big storage for downlaods, but not completely take over blu-ray.cds cds, dvds will be obsolete. everything will go to a blu-ray disc. mp3s will be obsolete, why , there are thousands of companies working on 24/ 192 dacs to kill mp3, and it will happen, why. when downloads get faster , people will want better sound. sacds has not worked because people dont want 100 different players to play them, but blu-ray will be the only player. blu-ray gets better sound. the movie o brother where art thou on blu-ray, the sound blows away the dvd. neil young americana on blu-ray is awesome, its a music only blu-ray , with no picture. it only makes common sense for music cds to go blu-ray. cds are too easily copied. downloads wont supercede blu-ray completely on music, as the downloads can easily copied. blu-ray has the perfect original master tape quaility sound for the first time. so what kind of person would prefer inferior mp3 sound? 500 megabyte recordable blu-ray discs are on the horizon. both blu-ray and harddrives will always be here to stay. 4k will be here to stay. aqnd the 21x9 tvs that went out ob business, that was unfortunately dumb, as these tvs matched the wide movies. but maybe the 21x9 tvs will come back with 4k. color tv was here 50 years to the day of hdtv. so expect hd tv to be here awhile.

I certainly do not think the future is physical media or blu-ray. The future will be streaming, HDTVs are now coming with Wi-Fi where you can load up Netflix or other such streamed content. I see the future where viewers will be much more likely to pay per use rather than pay to own a blu-ray.

The way I look at it is that physical media is similar to 35mm whereas the studios would rather support digital cinema instead.

Streaming viewers/content will get huge boost when 4K proliferates online.

As for the blu-ray fans, there will still always be blu-ray for those who want it, but it will be a real shame if the studios put a lengthy window on the release of a blu-ray in order to push the adoption of online streaming.

Netflix Speed Index,
According to Akamai state of the Internet, US average broadband speed was 8.6Mbps in Q1 2013, up 28% YOY.
http://www.xconomy.com/national/2013...ction-ranking/

Cisco predicts global average broadband speed will be 39Mbps in 5 years, up from 12Mbps today.

Seen stuff like this for years.

I have 10 Mbps service and all speed test show about this number. Reality, 2.5 GB file from Garmin takes about 90 minutes which ≈ 3.7 Mbps. I get about this or less from most sites (Synology, MS, Corel, etc.) with large files.

I can stream Netflix SuperHD and Amazon HD most of the time without re-buffers. VUDU HDX is a hit or miss, some nights no problem, others, it will re-buffer every few seconds.

For folks in larger metro areas many(?) have access to high speed internet but what about all those millions that have only DSL or worse, no internet at all (except expensive WildBlue). I bet these folks have little interest in downloading UHDTV.

This is the Achilles heal of streaming. Content isn't always there and if it's there today, there's no guarantee it'll be there tomorrow. It'll be on someone else's service for another fee. I've been streaming since about 2008, and I've never seen it as a replacement for a library, it's just another 'on demand' TV channel.
