Heck, DEATH is the future if you wait long enough. Question is, if you have your toys put in the coffin will they accompany you?

Yes, few things in life are more frustrating than people who insist on setting their own priorities instead of letting the more enlightened do it for them.

How about 19 years, it was available on my first generation DirecTV (1994) receiver.

Not this shit again. We are far away from an all streaming marketplace. It's growing, but physical media isn't going anywhere for a long while.

exactly. If you can't access something, how can you use it? besides, companies need to get onboard with streaming in order for it to work. When Netflix came out here in Canada, the internet providers threw a fit because it was "eating up" their bandwidth even though most users pay for unlimited internet. problem is that you didn't need to use Netflix for long before you exceeded your limit - I think it was literally as low as using it for a hour a day. Netflix had to create a low bandwidth version for people to use. but there was a catch - most of the internet providers are also cable providers who have their own on-demand product which surprisingly didn't eat up bandwidth. How can streaming and downloading catch on when you have such an obvious conflict of interest and internet providers use it as an excuse to gouge the consumer for more money? the market place isn't set up for streaming/downloading to take over so physical media won't go anywhere for a long time as it is still the easiest way to get your movies.

That's just showing it's more of a threat to cable companies. I mean, I won't lose any sleep over no more NFL blurays. The other article is about how cable companies are branching out into VOD, it's not about bluray at all.

It's almost as though they've realised it's a different market and not competition.

No, because what will happen is that these cable folks who switch over to streaming will see the value streaming has over purchasing a blu-ray. These folks will then understand how easy it is. Most likely, buying blu-rays are something that this segment of the viewing population does not do very often.
Keep yourself posted on this, when this push comes for streaming, it will be exciting.

Well, now I feel completely patronised and yet strangely superior at the same time. You've basically just agreed with me. Thank you.

IIRC from a fairly recent report, it stated the number of world wide MCVP (cable, satellite, etc.) is approaching 1 billion and is projected to exceed 1 billion by 2016. So streaming certainly has a ways to go on a global scale in terms of numbers.

IMO, streaming poses no threat to live TV (PBS, CBS, ABC, FOX). One nights live viewing can exceed the total number of Netflix subs.

Folks need to realize that rentals and ownership (LaserDisc, tape, DVD, BD) occurred and continues even tho folks had/have MCVP and SVOD. In general, I do see physical purchases declining and physical rental inclining.

As for it dying in four years.... not a chance, in another decade or so I can see it being replaced.

2022-2023 bluray will be near obsolete. Enough time for me to buy extra shelves, enjoy 600 or more purchases and re watch my faves many, many times. Now, all we need is TV sets and projectors to hang on that long.

They've also predicted the death of vinyl records 20 years ago and yet you can still purchase new LPs for many artists. Many audio purists prefer the sound over digital product. Just because the majority of the consumers are too ignorant to see or hear any differences or have no inclination to physically own entertainment, doesn't mean that the market for physical media will be swept away. If there's money to be made, even if it isn't at the same scale as before, products will survive. I've seen predictions as well that the TV market will collapse as the younger generation adapts their viewing habits to pads and phones. Yeah right. Just wait until they get old and they can't see the screen on their phones or pads!
