for me, the question is that is going to be the next big step. I am happy to sit at bluray for a while too but this is an industry and before too long, some new format will be out there but what will it offer that bluray doesn't? in the simplest, non-technical terms, bluray is really just a better quality dvd - more room so better picture and sound quality. so we get a disc with even more room - does that mean we need to jump all over it? vhs to dvd was a big step and I think we will need another one of those before we see most people change. dvd is still hanging on so I don't see a bigger disc making a huge impact with the general public.

, at 7 years Blu-ray is doing about 25 to 30% in terms of software sales, IOW, it probably never will be much more than that. IMO, UHDTV Blu-ray will be a subset of the Blu-ray market for several years.

Folks need to remember: Color TV was introduced in 1952. Look how many years it took for color TV sales to match B&W TV sales. Cell phone service was introduced 1946....., internet streaming started in 1994....., etc.

We really don't know if 100GB discs with HEVC is going to be sufficient for quality UHD presentations especially considering many proponents keep bringing up the possibility of 10-bit color. Although the higher capacity discs are good news, I just don't believe without a larger physical space that 10-bit color is going to happen on UHD BD.
I think you might be confusing ideology with technology

I agree. Some people think that just because they can make UHD panels now that it means we need to create new television standards and formats already. BD isn't even the dominant format yet in the disc industry so again I don't see how UHD is going to be more than niche product for the ultra videophiles.

NTSC lasted five decades and it wasn't even fully switched off as a broadcasting standard more than a few short years ago.

This is something I also been thinking for sometime, interesting question.

Looking bck at almost 35 years now of media purchases (movies since that is the subject and leaving out music and other things) I am amazed at how much money I spnd on it. Impossible to calculate with precision but I owned over 100 Betamax tapes, 250 Laserdics, 800 VHS, 1500 DVD and now in my 7 years 437 Blu-ray. Putting them at $20 each (and that is a gentle number since some of those like Beta and Laserdiscs were never that cheap) that give's me well over $60000. I think I have contributed enough to Hollywood bank acounts I am reaching an age where I am looking at other things now. Looking to go into a semi-retirement, staying in better shape, finding more physical activities to do. I found myself watching less TV and movies. Not a new trend this as been going on for some years. Seven years and only 400 Blu-ray really show how much I have slowed down compared to previous media. I also feel Blu-ray is my last one. I enjoyed movies but if a service like what my cable provider is offering now could be expended to include a wide range of movies where you pay just one amount to watch a movie with no streaming fees added, in HD as well...for me that will be enough. For now the catalogue is just not wide enough but if they can expand on this I have no trouble with it.

Sounds like you have lost your passion for movies in my opinion. I could never make do when I have bluray available to me.

Something like this as also been on my mind but I see it more tired of re-buying over and over. Enjoying my regular movies but I think I am just to a point that "enough is enough" most of these movies I have bought over 3 different formats, after a while how many more times do I need to buy them? Then again I might win the $100 millions jackpot which make's all of it irrelevant

I may feel the same way when I've got another 20 years on the clock, but I'm still a sucker for a new format when they come along: VHS, LD, DVD, DVHS, HD DVD, BD and hopefully 4K BD!

Fair point, I remember how I felt when I saw my first bluray and what a leap it was for my home cinema set-up. I guess I will be equally thrilled when I see my first 4k bluray. Movies have always been part of my life. Having said that, I am a single man (by choice) who has the means to buy into this stuff. I can see how some may get tired of re-buying the same film in different formats., especially when their are more important things to spend money on.

Some of this discussion reminds me of Laserdiscs.

Somehow (long time ago) they looked AMAZING.

Now, I can't possibly put up with how bad they look.

I'm wondering if some future tech could have this affect on Blu but I can't imagine it because Blu Ray looks ... ... ... AMAZING.

I need to go destroy the 2 titles I still own on LD (even though they will never come to a updated format) because if I try watching them it's going to make me mad because the video looks baaad.

On the note of getting old, retired, devoting more time to getting in shape... I understand all that but when I work out regularly,.. I enjoy the movie time I get much more. Working out results in exhaustion.
