If it comes with 5 free movies it's like buying 5 at $20 each with a free hddvd player. WTF?

Sony and Pioneer make 720P displays that accept a 1080P/24 input so that one can experience the benefits of 24fps material that is located on a BLU-RAY and HD-DVD disc. If one purchases a lower quality Toshiba HD-DVD player that does not output 1080P/24 then they will not experience the smooth judder free quality that both the HD-DVD and BLU-RAY format can provide.

No, it's a 3 day sale at $98.87, after which it goes back up to $198. It starts at 8am on Friday and runs through midnight Sunday (or while supplies last). It also includes about 13 HD-DVD titles priced down to $14.96 including:

The Big Lebowski
Four Brothers
Blood Diamond
The Italian Job
(can't remember all the rest)

EDIT: The $98.87 price is not available in 4 states (Utah, Hawaii, New Mexico, and one other) due to individual state laws preventing merchandise to be sold below cost.

That's all fine and good, but I can tell you from experience that HD DVD and Blu-ray both look awesome on my 720P set. No jitters with either.

People are willing to pay more for a perceivable difference. I can speak to the fact that on a 720P set, there is no difference between HD DVD and Blu-ray.

What gen is that? + that is a "factory-renewed" referbished

I have seen the same player I have for $339 but that is gen 2 & there was only 5 available.

I am just comparing 2 third generation models which are the latest. There are other good BLU-RAY players also.

Nonsense you say? Treason?

No, and here's why.

What they want with those deals is penetration, to boost the HD DVD disc sales that would go with those units.
Let's be real, wether you, Blu Ray fans, buy them or someone else, they will be bought at that price.
Except that you can use those as a good ol DVD player, or hell even for that one HD DVD title you have been dying to own. But not more than that

Each player they sell that does not generate 5+ sales in HD DVD discs is a waste for Tosh and its friends.

Now can you resist the impulse of buying HD DVD titles with a player? That is your call

But know that for each unit you buy, you not only do a favor to an uneducated soul, but also stick a major finger to Tosh (if you can resist the urge to buy HD DVD exclusives).
I'm sorry, but this is the worst idea I've hear. I guess if you own stock in the BDA, then maybe it makes sense, but otherwise, why spend $100 of your money to help a corporation that doesn't give a rats ass about you?

If this is what it will take for blu-ray to win, then maybe it shouldn't win?

BLU-RAY high bit rate MPEG-4/AVC and VC-1 movies have a better picture quality then HD-DVD. Some Disney movies are on two separate discs to maintain quality. The Pirates movies have one 50GB disc for the movie and one 25GB disc for extras. That's a total of 75GB used for one movie.
On a 1080P/60 or 1080P/24 display the movies are better quality on BLU-RAY compared to HD-DVD format. The PCM sound tracks are awesome.

The information is now available on the wal-mart.com home page. It does not list all the HD-DVD titles, and somehow only lists the HD-A2 as a DVD player.

Still doesn't change how the look on my 720P set. And if the number of 1080P set owners are going to decide the war, DVD will win.

The idea so far as I hear is to get rid of all these A2s BEFORE black friday, so the new owners can buy BF discs, and they're out of warehouses and off the showroom floors

Really?

I guess there's no need to buy Blu-ray's either then, since we can just buy the DVD and get the same thing.

Then I guess you were given some of the components in your signature?

Damn! I feel so dirty considering $98 to not worry what format a movie comes out on.

How many times does it take you to say the same thing. 4 out of 14 posts here, come on. This isn't the only thread where you are being ridiculously redundant. Hey, do you work for MS or Toshiba?

I hardly think 10 to 1 notice the 1080P price difference though. At this kind of a price point, people may not know very much at all about either format. At that price, it also gives someone very little risk, even if they just want to rent.

Renting is good to though. Renting can lead to buying when people perceive the value. Watch enough HD DVD's or Blu-ray's on a high def TV and I think most people will perceive the value of High Def media.
Renting does still not help with the over all cost in the bottom line and that the disc is still $30.00 on average per disc that is as much money you put into a car for a weeks worth of gas. and at $20.00 or less is sales on certain movies..and when your price is still over $19.95 people still shy away at the cost. renting is fine but the sale of the disc is much later when the price goe's down.

The factor is only when there is a sale for HDM does it have a real effect on the sell of disc's to consumers but the sale of disc's are still less than a (1) copy's sold of all HDM movies and thats after a full year on the market now almost 2 full years come APR...to the consumer's but right now with a single Blu-Ray game from what people say's is "a poor selling" game system has still managed to sell a single copy of a game disc over a (1 million copy's have already sold) at $60.00 on a new format.

the people who are going to buy these are going touse thenm with Standard DVD disc's. why do you think that the majority of PLAYSTATION 3 systems are not being used for Blu-Ray playback because the Movies cost $30.00

not because "people do not know about blu-ray" thats kinda hard not to know about Blu-Ray because in the paper, in the Media people have always talked about the playstation 3 costing so much because of Blu-Ray. and most of the time people were bashing the playstation 3 as being more of a movie player than a game system.
