So, given an increase of 15% that gets you to around $2.5 billion for BD compared to EST at $3 Billion with a 51% growth. I say the differential in growth rate between digital download (EST) and BD doesn't bode well for BD.

Also:

"Dwindling sales. So just how bad do projections of Blu-ray disc sales look over the next five years?

Preliminary 2011 sales numbers for overall DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales are estimated at $8.9 billion, with a projected drop to $5.5 billion by 2016, for a loss of $3.4 billion in annual revenues.

Disc rentals were at $4.8 billion in 2011 and are also projected to fall by 2016, to $2.9 billion annually.

In all, this means that disc sales and rentals will yield $8.4 billion in annual revenues by 2016.

The surge in streaming delivery of premium content, on the other hand, is expected to grow $3.9 billion between 2011 and 2016, yielding $6.7 billion in annual revenues.

Sometime in 2017, then, revenues from streaming media delivery of premium content will exceed physical disc sales and rentals. Also, in less than a year, sometime in 2013, the number of streaming minutes for premium content will exceed the number of minutes viewed on DVD and Blu-ray Discs.

There's a chance that the cross-over point will happen much faster than that. If Blu-ray disc sales begin to drop off between the 2012 and 2013 holiday seasons, studios will be placed in a financial predicament, where day-and-date releases to DVD and Blu-ray will yield much lower sales than equivalent streaming revenues. The cost of physical disc production and distribution, coupled with more limited retail shelf space, may force studios to abandon optical discs more quickly than anticipated

Let me paint you a picture of the future. You are sitting in your rocking chair, looking over at your wall of BDs, then your view shifts to the dusty inoperative BD player next to your old 1080P HD TV. You have been to Best Buy and looked at Amazon listings for replacement players, but none of them play BDs or DVDs any more.Only media servers are available.

You still have your 1080P TV, but you had to go out and buy a converter so you could watch the broadcasts which are now all in 4K.

Hope is not lost. Someday, Best Buy will offer an upgrade and save, which will allow you to trade your Blu-ray collection in for a 4K Sony Media Server and a new 4K TV. Prices should be reasonable by then.

Or... you could login to ebay and purchase a used BD player. Judging by how easy it is to still find a working LaserDisc player, it will be a long, long time before BD players are impossible to find.

ray is still trolling this thread? damn, did pagemaster leave him a memo to carry on the work?

and for all this talk of Digital downloading.. I don't know a SINGLE person who utilizes anything other than Netflix or hulu for streaming. and somehow I doubt streaming B movies and tv shows is gonna take over for disc based movies anytime soon lol. those reports on streaming media and viewership are EXTREMELY sleazy and twisted. Most of them included netflix revenue or include the viewership of youtube etc in a way to boost their numbers..

I think you are missing a couple of streaming services. Apple TV, Amazon VOD, Vudu, UV digital copy, and Crunchyroll come to mind. There are tons of people streaming programs even today. So the numbers are probably not as inflated as they may seem, However many of those subscribers to service also happen to either rent or purchase DVD's and Blu-Rays for more critical viewing or just plain ownership.

I don't know a single person who uses vudu outside of redeeming a digital copy from disc.

and Amazon prime is the only amazon streaming I know people using. I honestly don't know a single person who pays a per movie rental on streaming or purchasing etc. it's always the all you can eat dirt cheap streaming services that are used (amz prime, crunchroll for anime, netflix etc). Just like how cable has ALWAYS dominated the market for AMOUNT of viewers and revenue, streaming is setup to be the same way. used for cheap tv and movie re-runs

I use VUDU. They have a good selection of 3D movies and the quality at HDX is very good. It is very easy to add Ultraviolet movies regardless of studio source. They have a 99 cent movie daily which can be streamed in HDX. Today's 99 cent movie is Jaws.

Here is a critique of the recent DEG report mentioned in an earlier post.

Most people like the convenience of digital. With 4K downloads the critical viewing edge of Blu-ray disappears.

Nope, that edge would be a disc collection. Are you seriously going to keep posting these links? We have been here before. Please just leave us collectors and get back to your streaming.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, where everyone does different things and market diversity is an actual thing, music companies start releasing albums on bluray. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24441979

That's right, BLURAY audio. For them that aren't satisfied with MP3 and CD. Us. And we get a free MP3 copy to boot because we like to have the choice.

Actually, you could be right. After all, Sony and Microsoft decided to leave a bluray drive out of their new consoles due to it being a dying format and all.

it is only a dying format because they don't to support it/have something different coming down the line. will these new system play dvds? if so, then something is up if they won't also play blurays as it makes no sense to keep one and not the other. but from what I heard, they are not going to be backwards compatible either.

Blu-ray audio has been around for a while. Not so easy to find a retail outlet selling 45,78 and lp discs, let alone a turntable to play them on. I know people that prefer them though.

The point is, for videophiles the epitome of disc media is Blu-ray and there is no digital alternative that matches PQ. With 4K download, there is now a superior alternative and it is digital. Something has to give.

Given that a 100+ GB 4K movie download is stored at 38 GB on a media server, why is it taking so long for BDA to establish a spec?
