In general, they don't do enough online business to justify the staff needed for packaging and shipping. I could be wrong, but I highly doubt that movie sales at Sainsburys are even 1% of their monthly sales.

I doubt that Amazon would ever quit selling optical media as one of their goals is to compete with "brick and mortar" competitors like Best Buy/Future Shop, Walmart, and Target and they do make a high percentage of their profits from the sale of electronics and optical media.
Forgot to mention, I believe they are replacing online store optical media with digital downloads etc..

Not sure how it is going in the rest of the world, but ......
Streaming to rent has been a fantastic success in the USA (Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu plus, and even Redbox Instant now).

However, streaming to own has been a colossal failure in the USA. Best Buy is giving away movies to get people started using it's Cinema Now and people still aren't biting. Yeah, some are getting the free movies, but that is about it.

There are the Apple fanboys that love the ITunes downloads, but that is only a select group of a few people that either have their computer hooked up to a TV or actually like watching movies on their tiny laptop screen. Which doesn't amount to a large number of people (at least in the USA).

Most people that own Ultraviolet copies of movies here, only own them because they came free with the Blu-ray purchase.

Amazon does offer digital downloads of some of it's movies/tv shows - but again, the only ones of these that people seem to be getting are the ones that come with a movie you buy.

Couldn't live without my amazon prime streaming and netflix but only in addition to my blu-rays and they are used far more for TV shows then movies. Cable companies should be scared but optical doesn't have to worry yet.

Yet is not very reassuring is it? Like I have said many times, I think people need to pick a side. Can't have your cake and eat it in my opinion.

Can I sometimes eat cake and other times eat burgers?

Or do I need to 'pick a side' there too?

The difference is millions of people love cake and And burgers. The high quality A/v crowd is a vast minority. The sheep have spoken and it will affect us all. If not via more expensive discs then by less choice and eventually no choice.

But to be fair, in my opinion, maybe you disagree but you have always championed streaming so maybe you have one foot in that camp anyway. Maybe you won't struggle with the transition, I won't even try. I'm out of here if streaming prevails. We can't ignore the facts. Streaming is being pushed even more with DHD about to become the new buzzword. The sheep just see HD, they don't think of compression, fidelity etc.. Meanwhile, stores are pushing streaming/downloading online. If these stores close their high street stores, we are left with very limited choice. The ball is in their park.

I say it might be loosing the war as far as CD's (music) is concerned but Blu ray sales are still doing fine. I can see blu ray sales jumping since all PS4's and X-Box One's have a Blu ray drive.

If bluray sales were going to leap they would of leaped by now. The last time I checked, bluray was up 7% year on year over 2012. Since then, the last two weeks have been up with Man Of Steel still to come. My guess would be, by the end of the year (or quarter 4) Blu will be up about 10% maybe slightly less. I believe that is about the same as last year. That tells me that bluray is probably going to be up next year slightly before levelling off in 2015 or 2016. Once that peak comes, it is obviously downhill from there. More guesswork, but I would say bluray will probably be hanging by a thread by 2020. That still allows a lot of bluray purchases and I will have a collection in the thousands by that time. They should last most of my lifetime. After that point, I will be rent only if streaming is the mainstream (which it will be)

Obviously, this all depends on shops and online stores (amazon) stocking and selling them in the first place. Hopefully the industry won't pull the plug anytime soon.

IMHO, the 4th Q has a very weak BD release slate. It appears MoS is the ONLY strong title for the holiday season this year therefore I would not expect to see any large gains in sales % wise. As noted earlier here %’s do not tell the whole story. BD had big sales gains with the Harry Potter’s, Batman’s, 007's, Pirates, etc., without similar tentpoles the numbers will slide down.

I don't know about championing streaming lol as much as trying to intergect some perspective for the FUD crowd. When I joined this site back in 2007 I did the same in regards hddvd when I would read some of the crazy things on here despite never owning one. I still do the same when it comes to the ps3 when I hear people say things like ps3 is only 720p and 360 is 1080p because they don't understand the difference of native vs displayed resolution inspire of owning a 360 myself. You see I enjoy the media itself not the delivery method. I would have missed out on some great shows and a TON of anime without streaming. I also love my blues but not everything is blind buy worthy or worth keeping on the shelf. Quality has come along way in the streaming department. It will progress further as will optical. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy options of the theater, blu-ray, and streaming because in the end its simply a delivery method and they all have their own pros and cons.

So let me get this straight. Those who support streaming are sheep? Time to get some perspective if that's how you see things Steel.

What about the following Q4 titles?
Fast & Furious 6
Wolverine
Hobbit (extended edition) (not for me personally but some people like watching dwarves running longer through caves)
Monster's University
Despicable Me 2

Then there are some others that should still help sales:
Day of the Doctor
Planes

Not speaking for Steed but I believe that he is concerned that home video will go the way of home audio. That is to say most folks are content with MP3 or AAC. It is interesting there is so little in the way of high quality audio (FLAC) that is available for sale by downloads.

I have lots of streaming at home (Amazon, Netflix, VUDU) and it is OK for the 32" TV, iPad, office PC, etc., but for the most part I do not waste projector lamp time on on these streaming services.
