low priced equipment = low priced pieces of crap, i wouldn't, i couldn't embarrass my home system with this !
its a last call of desperation, a fire sale everything must go !
this machine is going to be geared to a very low to low income families (no disrespect to anyone) that will have a hard time affording the player, now how many movies will they be able to afford, hence the higher rentals for HD-DUD at netflix

Default Blu-ray BD+ crypto tech to be cracked by year's end?

BD+ has renewable security keys per movie title so the hackers will need to hack every single new title. So far there is no hack that breaks the entire BD+ security system.

“Bullish optical disc decryption software developer Slysoft has claimed it has cracked Blu-ray Disc's BD+ copy-protection technology, though the most recent version of its disc hacking tool only extends to the AACS anti-rip mechanism.”

Plain and simple there is nothing to argue on this site blu-ray has a larger capacity than HD DVD by 20 gigs. Blu-Ray has the support of all the major manufactures that really matter : Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer Elite, Sharp, Philips, Denon, Harman Kardon and so on. HD DVD has Toshiba, not excactly prestigious name.

So those are the few points that matter, what debate could you possibly want ? Everything has already been stated so clearly that even an HD DVD owner can understand it

You do understand they can't give these away right?

They just started selling these for 198$... and they are allready droping their pants to 98.87$ ?

They are panicking BIG TIME to pull a move like this so early. I think they might know something we don't (like an impending Warner announcement perhaps...) and they don't want to be stuck with all that junk in their stores. Why else would they be panicking like this and acting like crack *****s in need of a fix? Next it will be 49.97$ on Black Friday with a free lapdance from a striper
HD DVD = Randolph and Mortimer Duke (Trading Places) --> going to the poorhouse in a hurry Can't you just hear them yelling in desperation "get back out there and sell, SELL!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6cZUCa6Kyk

Junk Mart (KMart) just announced HD DVD exclusive for hardware
http://www.dailytech.com/Kmart+Choos...rticle9495.htm

They say it's because of price... well d'uh!!! Who is KMart's target customer? In any case it really does'nt matter because they sell and will continue to sell the PS3. Would ANYONE looking for HDM even think of looking at KMart? I don't think so.

What's next? The dollar store goes HD DVD exclusive?

As long as movies are 25-50% more expensive on HD DVD (compared to DVD) J6P will not care about High Def media and will stick with DVD. Again, most J6P don't even have HDTV's in the first place. And another thing, most J6P will not buy into a format war and most J6P, if they find out that Disney supports only Blu-Ray will NEVER buy HD DVD --> plain and simple.

Another thing that will happen with this sale is that people will go to Walmart all exited about this just to find out that either their Walmart does not cary the A2 or that it's sold out. Then the customers will buy something else and will never by attracted by a 198$ HD DVD A2 again as it will now be perceived as double what they should be paying for it. This could actually have advantages for the Blu-Ray side when you think of it that way... unless of course everybody else and their mother starts selling it at 98$ and has stock... but somehow I seriously doubt that. What happens when they run out of A2's? Toshiba will have to drop the A3 to 98$ also otherwize people won't touch it. Once you see a low price, you can't go back to paying more.

this site is for blu-ray supporters....we don't go over to hd-dvd.com and try to tell them why Blu-ray is better....

AVS is supposed to be an unbiased site....but the peoplein charge of that zoo suggest otherwise....

why don't people understand this logic?...

and the price may be one thing....you might sell slightly more hardware, but look at the upcoming lineup coming for both formats and tell me that BD won't keep the 2:1 advantage....

yeah, people will buy Transformers, Batman Begins and some other movies....but the majority of the top movies come out on Blu-ray...

The cheap HD-DVD player gives me alittle concern, but only very little.

First, it is an old model and only supports 720p/1080i as you say. Second, it only last for one day, in one chain store. I have a hard time to imagine HD-DVD gain anything major out of this. Especially when Toshiba will loose money if they sell less than 5 HD-DVD movies.

honestly, when people think "reliable"...Toshiba almost is on the lowest level of "brand names"....and this is if you count brands like Magnavox and RCA

what you have to ask is who matches prices at retail..does kmart match prices..walmart has the exact same HD DVD player for $98.00 so do you think KMART is going to be stuck with the cost's it may have to eat now to match that price...

No matter how much a person hates the red side, this is almost enough to make a person go neutral

The HD-DVD Fanboys are having a field day with this. Check out this thread at AVS:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=931479

To make things worse, this deal also seem to be eligable for the 5-free hd-dud movies ... Pffff

Is the A2 1080p or 1080i??? Not that it matters for me, I will never go neutral, but I am just curious as to what kind of a player they are getting for $99.

Default It might, however I think

This marks the end of HD dvd. 1st this is last years HD DVD player and second PPL that will buy this thing will not buy HD dvd discs at $30 a pop. Most stores that are running this say while supplies last most will only have 2-5 units, and they will not even make a impact on the format war until next year b/c most will be giving as Christmas gifts. To make matters worse at that price the average person will think this thing is the Toshiba Progressive scan unit.

They'll probably say it's a first-come first-served type thing and they'll have about 3 in stock. They do similar advertising in the UK with Asda (which is owned by Walmart). DVD players for £9.99, or digital tv receivers also for £9.99 but when I've paid them a visit strangely they no longer have any.

All this proves is that HD-DVD is cheap, which as we all know does not mean better. You have the chance to buy a car. On the one hand you have a Lada, on the other you have a Ferrari. Both have 4 wheels, both get you from A to B. You can afford whichever you want, which would you choose? That's right, a Porsche

Walmart will be selling the A2 for 97 bucks. My bet is Toshiba is trying to give away as many HD-DVDs as possible to claim player sale lead at the end of the quarter... I wonder if Venturer will be able to come to market given these Toshiba prices... I guess Not even the Chinese manufacturers are THAT magical to make money with such low price for a new tech product...
