That's the problem - you can't really stop at something like bluray as eventually you will be forced to upgrade if you want to watch anything. Thankfully it is a few years away but still.

How are you being forced? If you wanted you can stay with DVD no problem, all new releases are still released on DVD. Unless you wanted to stick with VHS you would have a point but i doubt you would want to buy new releases on VHS

If the only thing required to watch the 4K discs is a 4K blu ray player, then the new format just might make it. However, if you need a 4k blu ray player AND a 4K TV, then I honestly don't see a bright future for it. You'd have to spend a small fortune, unless we're talking about many years down the line. And by then streaming will just keep growing. Not everyone is rich. Or a videophile. Or both, which is what most of the people who will make the upgrade within the first year will be. |

I would like to remind everyone that these technology scenarios have been played out several times in the last 70 years. The verses change but the song remains the same. Some I have witnessed, B&W TV vs Color TV, Tube vs Transistor, CD vs LP, DVD vs VHS, etc. In most every case the advanced technology eventually became the norm. It seems there is always nay sayers and there is always cheerleaders for each advanced technology device/method.
UHD does offer a visible improvement over HDTV. As I stated elsewhere, the real handicap for UHD is there is no broadcast mandate for it. IMO, UHD represents the diminishing return in terms of picture resolution. IOW, I have no interest in 8K if all other aspects remain the same. The next phase will have to be more than just an increase picture resolution. |

It would also allow the consumers to make the switch to 4K in steps. You could buy a 4K blu ray player first and then eventually buy a 4K TV when they became affordable. |

Since I’m not a salesman, not sure where current prices are since this last price comparison was updated last Nov. but, I doubt they’ve increased since then, see the caption below the pic ….http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7...current-4k-tv/

steed you are missing what he is saying. Let me go with a simple example. Back in 2006/2007 4 day new years party I brought my PS3 to my sisters cottage on the lake so that we can play PS3 games and watch BD movies while there. I connected it to the SD TV they had there because back then they only had an old SD TV there. That is what he is talking about. If, when 4K BD comes out, the 4k TVs are still too expensive he would want to get a 4KBD player and buy 4K BD movies but watch them on his 1080P TV so that he can grow his 4K collection while not wasting $ on 1080p and he needs to rebuy them until the time he gets a 4K TV set.

But until then, I'd sure like it if there was a choice to watch 4K blu rays on a 1080p TV. |

I was looking at my collection and when I picked out the Classic Monsters collection from Universal and was admiring the art work in the digibook that comes inside each slip page, presenting the movie poster next to each disc. Also, an awesome little book that comes inside and made me think, there may always be physical media because not everyone wants to keep their movies stored on a GB or cloud, digitally non-physical.
Spread the love. |

I'm always going back and fourth about the decision of going all digital or still buy physical media. It's hard to let it go. Also, no streaming or downloading will ever compare to blu-ray quality (as of what's available right now). Not to mention, my collection looks pretty awesome.
