H.256 and beyond is going to open up the possibilities. I'd love cloud to local whole house media server.

I agree, however the 01/04/2008 Warner announcement did bring a sigh of relief . Here’s looking to the continued success of Blu-ray and what UHD may bring to the media room in the future.

Do you see Blu-Rays sticking around for a while?
I'm not entirely surprised.

Looking back at my college days, which were back in the "dinosaur" era of the later 90s/early 2000s, when music was going through it's rough transition to digital and movies/tv had yet to make any kind of digital transition (aside from unofficial, and often low quality, bootleg option), on average there weren't really a ton of people "collecting" movies in mass quantities.

I graduated high school in 1998 (the went to a community college for 2 years, then a full university for the next 2). With some of the money that I got for graduation, I got my first DVD player and started collecting movies like crazy (maybe not as crazy as it got later on, but crazy enough).

Since during this time DVD was still growing, most people that I knew had a few VHS tapes and/or DVDs, often of their particular favorite movies. But most people weren't collecting them in large quantities.

So I can see where these days the kind of person who would be less inclined to collect even back when there were pretty much no digital media options would today rely more on streaming and so forth. Especially in college when typically funds are limited.

It doesn't mean the death of physical media. Plenty of people still buy it.

I have decided to call it a day with bluray. It seems the tide has turned and I just feel at this point I am wasting my money investing in a dying format. It breaks my heart but from now on its Apple TV and itunes. Hopefully Vudu HDX comes to UK but I am not holding my breath. I am going to start the process of converting all my DVDs to digital when the option is available in UK. From now on I am renting all my movies, if there are any that I truly love I will buy on itunes.
Also, at this point my projector is going the journey. The Apple TV will be fine on a large screen tv I guess. I don't know where it will all lead but I'm just going to enjoy my movies as much as possible.

I am also leaving the forum and may I just extend my thanks to all the guys in my friends list and everyone who has offered advice. I'm not going to name names but I have become fond of some of my online buds (you know who you are) my passion for films goes on and I will of course still enjoy my purchased blurays.

Take care

Having read that, it never really clearly establishes why they made the decision. It's puzzling. They won't get my business. The only stuff I buy on DVD is old Doctor Who - format driven by source material. But I refuse to buy new/modern movies on DVD or the currently pointless digital copies. Blu-ray or nothing. At least they're just a small house. If this was Universal or something I'd be concerned. But it's not so I'm not.

Yes but I hope this is not the start of some form of cherry picking by some studios. Us collectors need the indie labels to care about their bluray customers IMO.

Why is this worrisome or even news worthy? Specially when there's already a thread about this and that article has been proven to be incorrect.

1) who is havingsaidthat.net? just because that blog is written like such a joke that it is not even funny (also many seam to call it in question)

2)"They had a great year last year with 3 films that were talked about all year (The Spectacular Now, Spring Breakers, The Bling Ring"

I never heard of two of those films until now and from the numbers on Box office mojo there is an obvious reason why not (when a film grosses 7M$ the only people talking about it are the friends and families of people involved with it ). The only film I recognized is Spring breakers and even thought it was dirt cheap when I bought it, it is one of a handful of films that I regret buying.

When WB, Universal, Fox, Paramount, or Sony make this decision and it's confirmed with an official announcement, then it will be news worthy of having its own thread outside of the "Oh no! The sky is falling" thread.

I believe they released spring breakers, and the bling ring in North America This year. We shouldn't underestimate the importance of smaller labels as a lot of cult films or indie films need to make it to bluray.

Hence the 'if true' . If it's incorrect that is great news. I'm delighted. If it was true I would think it was pretty major news. Especially a high profile title like 'Under the skin'.

The reality is if there is market for a title it will get released on disc.

Now if Disney was skipping a Blu release of a Marvel or Star Wars film then I'll worry. Plus there's a reason companies like Criterion, Shout/Scream Factory and Kino exist. They'll license cult titles for release if the content owner doesn't want the hassle of releasing of disc.
