It appears Blu-ray is on his way out sooner than expected according to Sony....

They didn't post a link but the article ended with: ""Primarily due to demand for physical media contracting faster than anticipated, mainly in the European region, the future profitability of the disc manufacturing business has been revised," Sony said today in a statement. "

Artical is misleading. They're talking about the entire company not specifically Bluray.

This coming from a company that outsources nearly all it's back catalog (Twilight Time & MILL Creek) And the fact that they limit releases to 3000 units only to see titles SKYROCKET in price (Fright Night).
Gee , I wonder why the profit isn't there ...... What did they expect ??! There's obvious interest in the limited releases after they are gone.... Sorry , but Sony is to blame for their own stupidity NOT the consumers. |

Certainly not happy to hear this news, but it's not surprising given a combination of factors:
Sucky economy for many years now. Too many people see little difference in the PQ Blu-ray offers and stay with DVD. Like DVD, streaming is considered good enough With cable company's providing faster and faster internet, the streaming option is just convenient. 4K has not taken off either, let alone needing an economy to support all this excess cash from people to buy into this stuff, over and over again. |

That's CDs, DVDs, Blurays. Their optical disc production unit in general. I don't see this as a failure of Bluray specifically - it is optical media in general. Like it or not, we use less of it each year. QOL in France entered bankruptcy several months ago and I speak to indie replicators on a daily basis who are struggling to stay afloat. Blu-ray is not going to suddenly vanish, neither will DVD or CD. The demand for discs will go down each year and everybody with a brain should know that by now. But it does cast a shadow over the viability of a future 4K disc format. |

Its TV sales are dismal and the brand value has eroded...They have a lot of problems. Gone are the days of the Walkman, Erickson, the PS 1&2, the Bravias ect. In addition, the studio section in the last couple of years has flopped. Blu-ray and DVD are more viable than ever as the chance of another physical format emerging are very slim. Streaming will always have limitations including actual ownership of something. Last edited by Blu Titan; 05-01-2014 at 03:58 PM. |

I can "interpret the data as it stands." I was talking about the article focusing ONLY on that part as if Sony announced that. They didn't.
And the PS4 is leading this generation in sales. By alot, as for your PS1/PS2 comment. And the game division made a profit. It's not all doom for Sony. Last edited by saprano; 05-01-2014 at 04:01 PM. |

well dvd was a red laser, we have blu-ray, ultaviolet - what color is next in the spectrum?
Blu-ray will be around for a while as they are trying to do more and more layers to it. Personally I am surprised we just haven't gone the flash-drive route since so many machines have usb already and you can easily get one that fits a movie. To me that would be a logical step since it is so much smaller - imagine a dedicated machine no bigger than a vhs tape that you plus into your tv and home theatre to use for movies(assuming you don't want to use your computer). I think that unless they start to go smaller or flash route, blu-ray will probably be it for physical media. I think they will develop it as far as they can but with downloading and streaming, I don't know if they are focusing on creating a new form of phycial media. VHS lasted a long time, don't see any reason why blu-ray couldn't when there is room to work with it that there wasn't on vhs. |
