Thankfully that day will likely never come because studios earn so much on physical media incl blu ray. Cd's are still here as well. And streaming is way bigger for music. And if one format of the movie media goes it will be dvd's not blu rays

Don't know if anyone posted this link, sorry if someone did:

http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/1/567...irment-charges

People who keep pointing to how great bluray did during Black Friday, we're on the outside looking in, Sony is now telling us things from the inside which due to the bad financials they have to reveal to stockholders.

This is a very telling article. $5 blurays? This is evidence that catalog sales are falling. Like music only the HIT TITLES will continue to sell big numbers but not enough to counter the actual falling revenue.

lol, this is just a message to stockholders to not expect the revolutionary profit's they were hoping for. the DVD era will never be replicated, it was an anomaly. and as for Sony.. they are ALWAYS reporting enormous losses, they'r the king of "It hasn't made a profit for 5 minutes so lets dump it. They always have been and always will be. other studios have given much rosier numbers...Also I wouldn't completely trust the verge. they're one of several tech sites who have been proclaiming for almost 20 years that physical media is dead "next year". they're kind of a joke that way.

This is absolutely true.

As a former shareholder years ago, I cannot recall a time of when Sony actually posted a profit. They have their proverbial hands into everything electronic and are constantly researching and developing new technology. From a shareholders point of view, Sony has NEVER been a sure thing money maker. All this article is trying to do is scare the masses into another format...

STREAMING.

The question you should be asking is why.... Why is the writer pushing the streaming format? Something to gain maybe?

For those on the "outside", this is the norm for Sony and it's subsidiaries.

Sony has invested TENS OF BILLIONS of dollars into the Blu-ray Disc format. They're not going to cut it loose anytime soon guys so just relax. It's going to take a while for BD to start posting serious profits just because of the start-up/development costs.

Then you have to consider that the economy is just flat out BAD. Regardless of what the "bought and paid for" media says, it hasn't gotten any better. People don't have jobs and because of that, they do not have disposable income.

I will applaud Sony for selling off their PC division. It hasn't posted a "true" profit in decades. With the competition at the time from HP, Dell, Gateway, Alienware, etc, etc they just couldn't lock down the marketshare.

BD is here to stay. I will say this though. The BDA needs to do some serious marketing if they wanna unseat DVD as the choice for home entertainment. To capture the "Average Joe's/Jane's" money, flood them with advertisements and such showing them how and why BD is so much better as a format and how it will make their HDTV experience blossom. You can't do that by showing a BD commercial on a DVD!

Advise them that their DVD's are compatible with BD.

Let them know about the durability of BD's unlike DVD.

This is just a statement from a former shareholder.

Carry on.

Default Blu-ray is dying! Kotaku article. :-D

Apparently, Blu-ray is dying... LOL! I don't think I've ever seen an article with a title so obviously named such, as to get people to read and into a frenzy. Then again, I don't really consider Kotaku a legitimate source for news. They even state in the article that Blu-ray is not dying, yet still, make the article seem like obvious flame bait with the title. I can't believe they would allow one of their people to make such a statement and post it to the site.

While I do believe we are a dying breed, I don't think we are on life support just yet. The Sony financial report does state that the demand for physical media is worse in the European region, and their main cause for concern. Even if the studios back off, there are still plenty of niche labels glad to pick up the slack. We will no doubt be paying more for it, but physical media as a dead format seems to still be years off.

I agree. I've read other articles about this in the last few days. Obviously, streaming is getting bigger and it would only seem natural that physical media sales would decline a bit. It just kind of left a bad taste in my mouth that Kotaku would give this article such a stupid headline, obviously, trying to get views and site hits.

I guess Sony, Samsung and LG are just dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into these UHD TVs and expect the average internet user to stream all this data... Who needs physical media? It's dying, after all. Go, Kotaku!!!

While I admit to streaming on Netflix (which I can hardly find anything to watch on anymore) and HBO Go. I'm still a physical media guy. I don't want to stream everything and if that is the way this thing is going then count me out on purchasing any future stream releases.

The day that Blu-ray goes the way of the dinosaur I will be at the stores scoring sales. Gonna be a Blu-ray hoarder.

Sony and Grover Crisp have given us some excellent transfers (LOA for one), and have shown pretty consistent dedication to quality in the format - yes there has to be some exceptions. I would think Sony will hang on 'til the bitter end.

I'm not a fan of streaming. The quality is nowhere near Blu-ray. Also, the selection does leave a bit to be desired.

But admittedly, I'm not the guy Netflix, Apple and everyone else is marketing to. I buy books. I buy CDs. I buy blu-rays. I don't buy ebooks, download music or use/purchase digital copies. If the physical media goes away, I'll pick up used stuff online or in dusty old bookstores, pawn shops and the like. But I'm not spending a nickel on digital content.

Sony may have won the battle against HD DVD, but its Blu-ray format is losing the war against streaming media. Even though the company has yet to announce its financial results for its fiscal year, which ended March 31, 2014, the company issued a warning that its operating income will be approximately 68% lower than it anticipated as recently as February.
