BDs aren't dying, people are just getting dumber and more content with sub-par media delivery formats. Do I really need to convince the friends I just made switch to BD from DVD, to now go to UHD, when they look at me crazy for wanting to calibrate their TV. The general population would just assume watch cat videos on youtube all day.

How does one calibrate a TV?

Short answer: No.

It's still growing. A lot of catalog titles are still coming out on the format.

The apex of the format's potential has been reached.

Sorry if it is, but after revisiting TrekBBS just now and seeing some of the replies to my post yesterday on the matter, it really shocks me at the reaction those folks over there have to the format. I also notice that most of the detractors to the format are from the UK. So I'm just wondering if there's a totally different consumer market for BDs over in the UK than there is here in the US. They talk a lot about the BBC and so forth. Which makes me wonder if the UK's nickel and diming fees and taxes that their average citizen has to pay to live there that it takes away from discretionary spending that they could otherwise spend on better quality media than subpar streaming services.

As far as TV series go, I think perhaps the reason more TV series aren't released on BD is because many don't have a lot of rewatchability, and the lack of multi-disc carousel BD players. It would be really nice if you could load up a 4 to 6 disc season of discs all at one time.

It's growing and dying at the same time. Some studios have stopped releasing some TV Shows midway, or continuing to release seasons on DVD or Digital. Rat bastards!

The format has to live at least until every Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, P.T. Anderson film has been released for it.

Right and that's one point I made over there. IF the BD format was truly dying, then why would all these 50+ year old films be coming out now? Like I said in my above post, I think the attitude over there is from poor UK people not caring so much about PQ and AQ. I just wonder how many Uk folks even have an HDTV.

With the 50th Anniversary of Trek coming up in a few years, and Trek 3 coming out soon, I can't believe that he folks behind the TNG remastering project aren't more than willing to preserve those two series as well.
CBS are primarily to blame for the lack of sales regarding The Next Generation, they under promoted a product and charged a premium price for it. Most Star Trek fans don't even realise how much incredible work went behind mastering the show in high-definition and many were equally ambivalent about what they were actually been asked to buy.

Unfortunately if CBS don't accept responsibility for their failure of arguably it's most popular show then two lesser entries into the franchise Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Star Trek Voyager may never be mastered in HD. Star Trek The Next Generation cost about nine-million dollars to master, Deep Space Nine would be about the same and it has fewer fans, Voyager even less.

I'm sure the restoration team would love a crack at Star Trek: DS9 and ST:V, but unless they can pre-sell the show into syndication to pay for the work and Blu-ray production then it isn't going to happen any time soon.

The release of Star Trek Beyond won't help either, whilst Into Darkness was been promoted rumour has it that Paramount didn't want to cross-promote The Next Generation to increase awareness, they went out of their way to stop it. They could have run special events with classic TNG episodes before the film's screening to promote the work, yet they didn't want the two mentioned together.

Also this has been gone over in detail in the Deep Space Nine and Voyager Wish List thread.

To each their own. Personally, after getting a new TV and loving the BD format I think it's dumb to expect me to reinvest in everything within 6 years of picking this stuff up. Most people want convenience and "the cloud" offers more convenience than shelves full of blu rays/UHDs. Personally, there's stuff I'll never by on blu, just stuff I don't want to watch compressed for streaming. And that isn't a lot compared to the stuff available relatively speaking.

It's because we're a few years ahead in terms of internet, I've always thought.

Netflix and Skybox sets or whatever they are, have totally destroyed the DVD/BD rental markets. I don't think it's possible here to actually go and rent a movie anymore. I read about Redbox and imagine something out of the ark. Like paying to borrow a disc? I can buy a second hand disc for pennies or a few pounds for a bluray and just keep it or give it away.

We don't have massive entertainment stores like Best Buy or JB Hi Fi anymore either. Best Buy crashed and burned when it tried to open here. There was one near me, but I'm not gong to actually go there when I can get a disc delivered from Amazon on the same day. I think HMV is still bravely pushing forward but I've not been in one for years.

That said, the likes of Arrow, BFI and Artificial Eye are still putting out amazing discs. I'm not at all worried about the format. The market has saturated though, there's only so many times people are going to buy things at this stage on the format's life and especially with UHD around the corner. Anything with a 4k master I'm not touching now (or at least thinking hard about it) as I imagine there'll be a disc in year or two or five so will make do with the vanilla disc for now.

Just $9 Million for TNG, huh? That's actually not that bad. Considering how much studios spend on movies these days, $9 Mill would only get you food costs. Maybe if we can get Donald Trump elected, he could send over a few dozen million to CBS and get DS9 and VOY remastered.
