Are you serious? Toshiba just alienated all ce's. This is their last chance. When toshiba finds out that their cheap players did nothing to spur software sales they will throw in the towel and warner will turn blu.

I wonder how many average customers have TVs that go to 1080i.

Default I kinda agree

If I can get Heroes and transformers now HD instead of two years from now then cool. Content people, it's all about content.

They know that the only way to sell HD DVD players is by taking HUGE loses. This is not a good thing. Yes, I am spinning this for blu-ray, but it is not in any way good for HD DVD to sell at this much loss.

Open you're GD eyes. This isn't about players in homes, this about business! And Toshiba is getting its ass kicked on the business side of this.
So would you say the same about the PS3. Hmm, my guess is that you will not. Do you know how much Sony dumps on every PS3 sold?? Even with that, 2 price cuts in the 1st year, HUGE loses. It is what you do to compete. So based on that, would you say the PS3 is getting it's ass kicked and it's more aggressive pricing is just desperation?? But all this is just good for the consumer. I finaly plan on getting the $399 PS3 this XMAS..

This will most likely simply set the consumer-expected price point for any new HD DVD players at $100-$200, hurting future player sales.

Yes, the PS3 is getting it's ass kicked as a game console.

The difference is console wars are not something which requires a single unified winner.

From the Black Friday web site....

Now, the golden question is: will these same items be on sale for Black Friday for cheaper prices? We don’t know, but I will tell you that the Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player for $100 is the lowest price it’s ever been sold at, making it a very hot deal. In addition, with the purchase of the DVD player, you can get 5 Free HD DVDs by mail through Toshiba and Microsoft (Download the 5 Free HD-DVD Offer in PDF here). With the average price of an HD-DVD being around $20, it’s almost like getting the DVD player for free.

Oh another PhD joining us in this discussion? So, PhD, what have they done, raise their player prices?, kept their title prices high? and haven't placed any pressure on Fox to lower theirs? Let Paramount/Dreamworks slip away? Come on PhD, what have they done? The only thing I can see are the Disney BOGO (Temporary response to TF, just lke getting Fox to release titles again after the Paramount/DW debacle) or Sony's new 40GB PS3 (A great move, but is not enough to counteract Toshiba's "cheap" strategy). Where is Panasonic, Pioneer, Fox, et al When will they join the fight? Sorry PhD, the BDA has done NOTHING for months now, face the truth, they have no clue what they are doing and it is killing Blu-ray.

Blu-ray players always have been, and always will be more exensive than that half-assed format's players.

And it hasn't mattered one bit. Blu-ray has consistently kicked ass ever since the PS3 launched.

As HD has dropped prices Blu has responded as best they could.

There is *no* magic price point at which consumers buy into HD at volumes that will save HD. This mythical magic price point falls right behind Sasquatch on the Shi* That Don't Exist list.

Everyone needs to relax and stop acting like scared little girly men.

It's going to be interesting to watch.
not even just that...

how many people will buy the player and buy spider-man 3 on blu-ray thinking it will work?...

after the returns....these players will sell for about 50 bucks...

Angry Hd-dud

I am sorry, but I am willing to wait for my movies; I waited on DVD movies and I will wait for Blu-Ray.. just buying movies on HD because Blu doesn't have it yet just prolongs the war. not a good thing to accomplish.

Yea great, anyone with an opinion that you don't like or isn't in alignment with YOUR thoughts. I am a Blu-ray supporter who actually cares about the viability and future of the format. You, on the other hand... Well we will just leave it at that.

Yes, I am a former Marine. If you have any other questions about my service feel free to send me a Private Message.

I'm always happy to talk Marine corps, especially with our birthday in 9 days.

Um... in case you weren't paying attention, these players were not actually for sale previously at $198at WM. The HD-A2 came into stores at that price but a POS sales restriction was put in place, barring them from being sold. WM along with CC only confirmed earlier this week that they were carrying them and that AT THAT TIME they were sub-$200. They have yet to actually sell any at that price.

Sony choose a longer term strategy. Newer games require more disk space and DvD wasn't going to provide it. So they threw in a Blu Ray player for future capability. They might have had a short term loss, but in the long run it was better.

Agreed. 1080i is not junk. Most people here couldn't tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p if both were in front of them.
