Something like 80% of the US population has a broadband connection. And a very significant chunk of the people without broadband also have the least disposable income to drop on movies.

I wasn't comparing the two, just that when renting physical rentals declined the industry declined with it. And remember that all those discs made for rental were part of the physical industry. I'm sure they're making far less of them now. In the UK we have Rental and Retail copies, since Blockbusters has gone I'd imagine the Rental Copy production isn't anywhere near the size it was a few years back. 30 years ago rental tapes were probably a huge percentage of the home video industry.

I'm not saying that physical production will disappear completely (it's just going to get smaller). I wouldn't want that to happen, but eventually it's going to be a very small minority of buyers that want physical products over digital ones.

you don't know that. And don't you dare compare movies and tv shows on Blu and dvd to music. Its not even in the same ballpark. music you can do everything while listen to. Movies you have to keep your attention on the screen. And its more presitige to own movies than music.

You do know US is not the only country in the world right. And out of those percentages you name as well there are physical movie and tv buyers

The US numbers were easiest to find. But Europe and the developed parts of Asia generally have better, faster internet infrastructure than the US, so presumably they're not lagging behind there.

There is no clear cut evidence one way or the other on how people without broadband spend their money, as far as I can find. But my gut tells me the convenience stores around rural wyoming are not stacked to the ceiling with blu-rays.

How did you come to this conclusion? Maybe among fellow collectors on this forum (not me, I don't care about size ), but in the real world it really isn't.

That's always been my defense, or, reason, to why I think movies on physical media will have a better fate than music on physical media:
Movies are a PRIMARY function.
Music is a SECONDARY function.

I manufactured CDs for two decades, and even with that bias, a bias being pro CDs, I knew they'd die. Even while making CDs (I was a mastering engineer), I'd go home and download/buy songs on iTunes. I knew CDs were dying. I understood the desire to want to carry allllll your music around with you on an iPod.
But I have no interest in downloading or virtually owning files of my favorite movies.. and no gut feeling, that movies on disc will die in the next thirty years. I don't want to travel with my movies. I prefer to watch them on my couch on my TV so it gets all my attention

You really need to calm down. Does people streaming suddenly make your collection disappear? No? So why are you so up in arms over it? The fact of the matter is when you buy a movie, whether digital or physical, is that is is still merely a license. You can't broadcast the film to a large group, you can't make copies. It's a license. One is on a disc, one isn't. The only thing that will change is film resale.

The difference is physical is OWNING a copy of the movie or tv show that you can watch 10 times a day if you want. Digital is that you think you are owning it but in reality you are really only owning SMOKE

The people who now stream their movies digitally are the same people who were renting DVD's when there were a plethora of video stores. I actually know lots of people who would still love to rent DVD's or Blu-ray but even in my large city we have just one video rental store left, so these people were basically forced to switch to streaming. When most people talk about dumping their collections, they probably only had a few dozen titles at best. I can't say I know anybody with 1000+ titles who dumped everything for streaming.

There's no restriction on how many times you can view a digital film.

I personally use streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Vudu for convenience but I only watch 1080p streams.

But I prefer to have dics in my hand whenever possible.

Assuming the service you are viewing it from still has the film in question and that you're internet is functioning. I don't need either with a disc and I get better PQ, AQ, and extras.

I kinda get what he is saying. There are just so many movies that come out each year that it's hard to watch everything you want to. I love rewatching movies but definitely find it tough between choosing to watch an old movie for the 7th time or watch something new I haven't seen before. For me it jsut comes down to what I'm feeling at the time. For some reason I could see younger people having a tougher time rewatching movies.

It's not just streaming, but buying digital. You get the same quality as the disc in almost all cases. If my internet is out so is my power, so having the disc is no help.

I was watching Netflix round a friend's the other day and Netflix lagged and buffered 3 or 4 times during a 20 minute episode.

Um no, where did you hear or see this manure?

Not necessarily on the internet access. ISPs have issues all the time and it has nothing to do with power.

There will always be machines around. It could all go the "manufacture on demand" way much like the Sinister Cinema and Something Weird Video does.

Nope, I know plenty of people who watch the same thing over and over.

Whereas I'm a younger person with a watchlist with 700 (and growing) films on it so rewatching is something I barely even consider (although there is a Back to the Future anniversary coming up, so...)

My ISP has issues often enough that I am darn sure I will never go digital.
