The only time I will chose digital over physical is when a film or tv show I desire to own has no bluray release only DVD. It's nonsense but I understand it just sucks. I resort to downloading 1080p rips which don't come close to the actual thing but it's as close as I'll ever get.

While I whole-heartedly agree, no one really uses MP3 files anymore. They've moved to better codecs, though most still aren't lossless unless you specifically rip them from a CD that way. And of course, most downloads aren't, of course.

I'm intrigued with digital, and know all the pro's and cons. For now I am physical. The biggest issues I have with digital is not things like picture quality and that you don't own it, and the studios can take it back at any time.

My 2 issues,

1) there is no standard. iTunes does not work on any other tv box except Apple TV. Amazon prime and Vudu do not work on Apple TV. Sure there are work arounds such as using air play, but it really shouldn't have to be this way. The reason why music is so successful, is because you can buy a file from any place, and play it on any player. You can keep all of your music on 1 device.

2) I love going to stores to look at and buy Movies. I love going out on Black Friday. I love making my lists and planning the order of stores I will go to. To me, that is part of the fun of collecting. I love you tube videos of people showing off their collection. I love giving or receiving a gift. I love looking at my collection, neatly on my shelf. You get the picture.

Any way, that's my rant.

Ya know... when your "purchases" are in somebody else's cloud and they own the servers and the licenses and the software and the apps and the lawyers, you need to think real hard about what you "own". What happens when one of these jokers goes out of business? What happens when their accountants declare that there isn't enough margin to support permanent streaming of old purchases? Or when the lawyers do what lawyers do. You gonna be happy when VUDU tells you that you now need to pay them $30/year to maintain your video inventory? Or your itunes account changes so that there's a download charge of $1 per film?

Murphy's Law folks: If something can happen, it will.

I 100% agree with what I bolded. Sometimes on my days off or nothing to do after I've taken a long stroll, I just look at my shelves and decide on what movie to watch based on that.
Love going to stores and finding a title which I've been searching for awhile in the condition I want it in along with a great price. Feels as though there's a sense of accomplishment for my collection if I find it in store which meet my criteria instead of having the bulk of the USA part of my collection ordered lazily from online.
I find online only matters to me as a last resort of not finding a USA release in stores. But more often than not I have zero qualms ordering online if it's for importing and I know which sites to use.

For Digital Copy including all its various themes, I heavily prefer selling the codes so I can go around to be more physical Blu-rays. Bonus if a title or a few has the Digital HD/Digital Copy or whichever code. Means more money for me to buy even more Blu-rays. Since IMO Digital Copy are a complete waste of time.

I love my physical media. I agree it takes up space and I love the idea of digital files. So I get the best of both worlds. Buy the blu, rip to mkv and shove it in my movie server. I use Emby to manage the collection. It is so awesome. I load my movies in seconds and never have to watch any forced content.

FYI, the blu is retained and stored. I am not promoting piracy.

Yeah, I hear ya. The temptation is great to go get an illegal download when the BD is strangely not forthcoming. Vudu and Itunes and HBO all have HD versions of the movies while we twiddle our fingers here. So your choices become 1) wait and live w/ the DVD, 2) buy the digital version giving into the content providers and conforming to their rules 3) pirate. I've yet to go route 3, but I frigging hate choice 2.

All I can type is, eh, custom BD25 Blu-rays of titles not even available from any company worldwide on the format. I'd rather buy the release I want from the company I want when it does. It's only interim and I'd rather have a physical disc.

I hate streaming because I live way out in the country and sometimes I can go for days with no internet. My wife tried Netflix and Hulu but every time we tried to watch something it would load slow and stop and load like every 10 minutes. It was really annoying and the quality of the picture was bad too.

I will stick to my blu-rays and if another media comes out I will be one of the 1st to jump on the wagon. I am the same with my music also, I will keep my Cds and Vinyl.

I noticed another thing, I have a few friends I almost got to start buying Blu-ray movies and leave Dvd behind but as soon as they find out that movies like fright night were limited to 5000 copies and they could not own it also they decided to stick with dvd.

I think that may also be why some are jumping on streaming also. People don't like the fact they cant own a film they love because they missed out on some limited run.

Really? That is a fairly uncommon thing to happen to a title. That is mainly a Twilight Time practice. And usually you can find those sold out films on ebay. In the end all it really means are some titles are going to be pricey.

True but it isn't exactly like the movie industry is really hurting. They talk about how much money it costs them but even though attendance was the lowest in about 20 years, box office for 2014 was still over $10 billion domestic. Fox only made just under $2 billion domestic but when you look worldwide, they did $5.5 billion - a new record. I am not going to sit here and say downloads are okay or anything like that but the fact is Hollywood is not honest about the numbers and the impact. Movies still make a fortune despite the crap Hollywood had been making. Besides, in this case, it is supply and demand. They have an HD version available, they just don't see the profit in selling it but they have no issue selling it to tv to show. Why not make it available for download for $10? You can't hold back product, advertise about all the new box office records your movies are making and then go poor us, people are stealing and it is taking food out of our mouths.

Personally, I hate the Twilight Time practices because first, it is hard to get them here in Canada and second, how often can you actually get them at their suggested price? It is amazing how they always seem to sell out quickly and then flood places like ebay for double or triple the price.

You can buy flac audio files from some music sites now. Flac is lossless and is equal to or better than CD quality. I've seen sites sell music in flac at 24bit/96kHz or even 192kHz.

You can store tens of thousands of flac files on modern hard drives. You can also rip your CDs to your hard drive in lossless flac and it takes up less space in MB than a CD does.

I've transferred all my vinyl to lossless flac. Now I listen to my vinyl through my external media player through my receiver with the same exact quality as the original vinyl without risking damaging the record - it's safely stored away.

MP3s at 320kbs are said to be virtually transparent to the original audio. In other words, the average human ear can't tell the difference. I find high-bitrate MP3s to sound excellent, though I always prefer flac and I do all my encoding in flac. What I hate are the low-bitrate MP3s.

You shouldn't say things that aren't true.
I don't do it.

Most people still use MP3. Only die-hard audiophiles care about lossless flac. All Amazon sells is MP3 last time I checked.

Apple is the most popular music retailer in the world. The files are AAC.
