No, we're talking about the demand for televisions and your belief that this demand will simply evaporate.

And all the different ways people use their televisions are relevant to that discussion.

Sports is a huge market and people like watching sports on big screens.

There's no way around that.

Now you're just grasping at straws. Bly-ray Discs can still be resold, or given away to friends/family. It doesn't matter if there is DRM on the disc themselves. They still offer more freedom than a DRM-encrypted file.

I can't sell my sisters either but I'm pretty sure they're tangible.

For instance, if one of them read this and smacked me in the head I'm pretty sure I would feel it.

In fact, I'm quite sure.

Those considerations might make digital files stored in one way more appealing or desirable than digital files stored in some other but that has nothing to with whether one set of digital files is more real or tangible than the other.

Everything can be sold on the black market
(except DRM-encrypted files)

Any chance I can fly over and smack you in the head?

At this point it seems the concern has shifted from PQ to resell ability? My question is why are so many people buying and flipping movies that it is such a concern?

Sure, you can resell or give away any file (precisely the reason companies love DRM, ya know) - it's just usually not worth any money.

Can you make a back up of a blu-ray? Not legally. Can you play it on a non-HDCP compliant display (not really a problem these days, but was a big one for me early on in the format's life)? Not legally. Can you skip the menus, or copy it to your phone to watch on that? Not legally. And so on. What you can legally do with your blu-ray is play it in a blu-ray player.

You'd better hurry. People do a lot of business and stuff over the net now so planes are probably going to disappear soon.

I think the point is, you can buy any blu Ray at any store, and it will work in any player. Whether you buy a blu Ray from Best Buy, target, FYE, Frys, the supermarket, flea market, etc., they will all play on your one bluray player. If your Samsung breaks and you replace it with an Oppo, guess what? Everything still works. If blu Ray gets phased out, the market is flooded with players, that you would never have to worry about getting a machine to play your discs, which will still work probably for your lifetime.

With digital, you buy from Apple, you have to play it on Apple. If you buy on UV, there are only a handful of placed that support the format. Amazon, Vudu, Apple, etc all cannot be played on the same platform. There is no digital standard. It's a mess. It is worse that the format war. One day you may need separate set top boxes for Apple, Amazon, Vudu, Netflix, etc. Amazon just anounced they will stop selling Apple TVs and Chromecast in a push to force people to use Amazon digital service. While I prefer physical, digital could be way more successful, if they actually tried. In a sense, it is a good thing for people who prefer physical.

I'm strictly talking about DRM-free downloads. There's plenty for audio, but I'm not aware of any that sell video yet. Obviously, media that is locked to a service and/or has to phone home to play is only tenuously yours and is less than ideal as far as "ownership" goes (though services like Steam show that locked-down distribution can also be very consumer-friendly if it's not run by short-sighted idiots).

Nevermind Blu-ray or DVD. I'm predicting a big comeback for DivX!

Lol, except Circuit City is gone now. I guess it would have to be Best Buy who brings it back.

DivX =/= DIVX

DIVX = Failed pay-per-view disc scheme cooked up by Circuit City and heavily supported by Fox Video and Disney

DivX = A popular (though aged) MPEG-4 ASP video codec. (It is also a company that markets said ASP codec plus a few decoders of their own design, and which licenses/certifies hardware devices for DivX compatibility).

If you absolutely must own a film, blu-Ray is currently your best option, but I don't see much of a reason to have a huge collection anymore

I think it's fine to continue to buy blu-ray, because I'm not planning on getting a 4K TV for at least five years.
