Millions are been invested in short form video. All kinds of deals been signed. The YouTube model is stupidly successful. Expect more and more short form videos regardless of content/genre.

One of the best weeks for blu ray ever?

Overall physical sales only down 0.18% from the same week last year.
Blu ray revenues up 28%
DVD revenues down 14%
DVD outsold blu ray with only 58% to 42%.

Its nice that DVD revenues were down and blus were up. Could this be a sign of things changing? I hope so. Maybe with all the 4K tv purchases, people finally realize that DVD just doesn't cut it anymore.

Great point, and spit on!
I would take a little further and not just say younger generation, but those without kids running around the house!
Nothing eats into movie/tv viewing time like kids....nothing!

I can attest to that. I went from watching 1-2 films per day to watching 2-3 per week since I have three children now.

You can't look at one week's data in a vacuum. You need to look at the sales trend over a longer period. Any week can be an aberration due to the popularity of a certain title like Furious 7 or Ulton Avengers.

Which brings up a related question:
In 2020, will they be doing away with 1080p TVs and only selling 4K TV's? Will consumers have a choice between buying a cheaper 1080p HDTV and a 4K TV for years and years?

From a technology perspective, they can manufacture the panels at set density, and slice them up as they see fit. If you produce 60" 4K panels on a production line, those can be split into 4x 30" 1080p panels.

Hopefully, someday this will get studios to stop putting drink coasters in my Blu-ray cases.

Changing? DVD revenues have been slowly eroding while BD revenues have been slowly climbing for almost a decade now.

This year won't prove to be very different from any of the others that preceded it. Physical media will be down overall and DVD will probably wind up with the same 70ish percent of that shrinking pie.

There is a lot of DVDs that are not available on Blu-Ray so people will still buy DVDs like I do...

BD revenue was down 8% in 2014. It's down 16% this year with one quarter to go.

You should differentiate revenue figures from number of sales though. Any smart marketing chap would be have been strategically pricing products to shift the media market from equilibrium to bias towards the prevailing format. Slowly shifting DVD margins up, and Blu-ray margins down. Stronger sales on a lower margin product would equate in similar revenues.

My first reaction to this was the following:

But then I was like "Yeah, you're right. Whoa."

Hey guys, even more reason to stick with physical media. Comcast is officially putting data caps on unlimited plans in the southeast U.S.

Wednesday, Oct 7

Comcast, the largest cable company in America, is not at all happy about people that are throwing out the pay TV and just streaming content from others, according to Channel 2 Consumer Advisor Clark Howard.
He says that’s why Comcast is experimenting with data caps, meaning your unlimited internet is no longer unlimited under this experiment.
What happens is you will get a notice from Comcast saying you're using too much Internet. The notice will tell you that if you keep doing it they’re going to bill you for overages.
Comcast has created a data calculator that you can use to calculate the estimated amount you use each month.
The experiment is happening in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Tennessee and South Carolina.

Jeez. "Using too much internet".
Screw them.
Just like limiting large, sugary, soft drinks.
