Seriously, when the MP3 revolution began in the early 2000's, many people switched because it was easy and free. Then, when the "music police" busted that up (somewhat), some were willing to pay for the download. Then those same people realized that the cost of the download was almost the same as actually owning the CD itself. And once their Ipod/computer crashed, they had nothing else to turn to like a master CD.

I feel that CD's will always be in existence. And the disc format for movies will as well, be it DVD falling to Blu Ray, which might fall eventually to 4K and so forth. Bottom line, most people want a tangible object to have their entertainment on, rather than it existing "in a cloud". Sure, there will be people who just wants it now, but the "hoarders of entertainment" will always outnumber them.

That's my entire buying philosophy. I currently have 16,954 on my ipod classic - I'd guess that no more than 30 songs were purchased from Amazon or iTunes digitally over the years just because they were exclusive to them. Everything else, ripped from my personal CD collection.

As far as movies go, I've got maybe a year or so's worth of UV codes from blus in several boxes that I just never bothered to redeem. I think I'll just select the handful I'd want to keep and just sell the rest here sometime.

First of all, "sales" and "purchases" are terms which corresponds to "sell-through" (buying media to own). Physical media outsold digital $6.1 billion to $1.9 billion. Not even close.

Secondly, even if you include streaming and all rentals, physical spending was still higher than digital: $9.2 billion to $8.9 billion.

What the fabricator above did was neglect to include some physical categories in the comparison, namely all physical rental revenue. Did people actually spend money on those rentals? Yep. It boggles the mind what people will do to cherry pick data and pass it off as "fact". It obviously destroys all credibility in the article.

Here are the actual figures below.

As did the 'Kllled CD' comment. I think I'm going to stop visiting some tech sites because the amount of (IMO) click bait and rubbish articles is shameful.

My take on it is that he isn't anti-4K Blu-ray.

He has in fact said that he's a cinephile who's prepared to embrace 4K Blu-ray.

However, it's the masses who ultimately decide what's best for them. And the masses will go for what's best for their pocket and convenience.

DVD was so successful because of the versatility of the CD. A digital format that didn't chew up no matter how many times you played it and you didn't have to rewind it once finished.

I'm an engineer to trade and I visit at least 40 households per week servicing broadband and pay TV. Blu-ray players are very few and far between. And I'm noticing even less dvd players too. More customers are actually streaming now which is ultimately made me realise that 4K Blu-ray is going to be a niche product.

Conversely, it wasn't that long ago that we had an HD format war and the superior format prevailed. And that's because I and my fellow members of this site embraced the format for what it could do. However, I cannot see myself replacing all my Blu-rays the same way I replaced all my DVDs, not to mention my very expensive 64" tv anytime soon either.

Only time will tell, I'll come back to this thread in a couple of years to see how the 4K Blu-ray format progresses.

Antedotal. I can give you several examples the other way. Including PS4s being carted upstairs and downstairs to appease all members of the family. By the way, my job involves home visits also.

If I go out and buy a 4K tv, my nearest and dearest will guarantee that I don't have a pot to pee into, yet alone have a window to throw it out of.

Move on, nothing to see here.
For CD try 30 years. The first popular music CD produced at the new factory was The Visitors (1981) by ABBA. The first 50 titles were released in Japan on 1 October 1982

My daughter is into K-Pop. Someone should probably tell them that the CD market is dead because it is a HUGE market right now. What they put into a mini-CD would put some of our blu ray special editions to shame.

Physical media is going nowhere. I do think that 4K is a msistep right now though since honestly blu ray is becoming accepted and DVD is still strong.

The stats are wrong but the message is correct.

In the UK I can walk into a electronic store and buy a 4k TV.

However -

A full blown subwoofer - No
Any decent brand of surround sound speakers - No
Receiver or Amplifiers - No
A full range of Blu rays and DVD's - No
Blu ray players - A few.

Although I Admit you can buy cheap all in one packages and sound bars.

The only thing thats catching the eyes of the public is the size of the screens and even then more than half are just going by price, not by any measure of what the TV can or cannot do.

Depends. Would you consider £599 cheap for a sound bar? Or £989 cheap for a surround all in one? You weren't looking hard enough IMO.

Besides, all those things are easily available online. I just recently ordered an amp easily. No fuss at all. Plenty of options, pages of choice. The chances are, people who are really into all that stuff would buy online anyway.

Doesn't sound cheap at all. In Australia I spent $400 for my blu ray player with 5.1 surround sound kit. I'm no audiophile of course but it sounds good, and that'd be less than a third of what you quoted in pounds for a SS set.

And that is our biggest (mainstream electrical store) dedicated stores in major cities will stock that stuff or at least have online options. Makes like Bose, mind you they were near a grand.

Late to CD's I see. I wasn't early either, but picked up the portable D-5 for Christmas in 1984. Forget what my first titles were but a bought four or five. I know I bought Dark Side of the Moon early on.

Add me to the list of people that prefer physical media over streaming. I do watch Netflix from time to time. If I watch a movie and really like it, I'll go out and purchase it on physical media. I'm sure I'll do the same when Ultra HD blu-rays are available. Streaming is not guaranteed tomorrow but my physical media will always be here when I need it.

Now If I could stream movies the same day that they are released in theaters, I would stream those regularly (new releases only). I would still buy a physical copy if it's a good movie once it's available.

When you can only get something online its a niche product. And UHD blu ray disc will be one such thing. A niche product.

You hammered home my point in different words.
