Like saying "Mail Man" even if it's a girl.

Like saying "Q-Tip" even if it's a Walgreen's cotton swab.

Like saying "Hey guys!" to a group of people that consists of both males and females.

Yet people get offended.

Wonder if WE Blu-ray enthusiasts should get offended

The one I hate the most is people calling a tissue a Kleenex or better yet saying Xerox instead of copy.

Yeah. Whatever brand was popular wins out and said brand name gets used in place of the product.

I feel like all tablets will be called iPads, even if they're Droid tablets.

DVD beat out VHS but bluray continues to remain in the DVD terminology shadow. Bluray would be the generic term if it had truly conquered DVD which it did not. Bluray did not make the inroads to the general public's heart like DVD...4K UHD how's the public gonna embrace this new format.

What does this have to do with the topic of physical? The fact that bluray did not become a generic term means this format was less successful than its previous format but everyone knows the term streaming and uses it.

Enjoy it while you can because bluray, 4K, 3D all will continue to have diminishing returns especially as the millennial grow into middle age and begin to have families...the next generational shift away from baby boomers.

I agree because Apple has so successfully marketed their tablets and phones iPod iPad iPhone all nearly generic terms now which shows the incredible success Apple has.

It's more to do with the fact DVDs and Blu Rays are both discs whereas a DVD was visibly different from a VHS tape.

But yes, it hasn't overtaken the market as it should have done.

A factoid from another article that came out today: only 4% of consumers purchase digital content but not physical content

You make a valid point DVD v bluray are both disc.

Also what about the word blu ray or bluray. Blu Ray is correct but bluray as one word is so much easier.

We are moving away from ownership consumption. In fact we're going full circle.

Back in the old days before records people listened to the wireless...radio and Did not own the content.

Back when I was a kid you watched a movie or a tv show but did not own it. Ever wonder why Star Wars had so much repeat business...we couldn't own it at the time.

Access is the game changer for physical-less media.

I agree with every word of this, and wish more did. Shelves with a couple hundred movies you own have a hard time competing with the little box on your TV that can give you access to those plus 10,000 more.*

*for about 90% of consumers

Yup, but us sad old film fans need to own the movies, just like in the sixties & seventies I needed to own the records & have always needed to own the books, but I know it's (slowly) all change.

In the VHS era, most people rented tapes from Blockbuster too.

The way I see it, most not all of the releases I want are available on blu or forthcoming. I was a little disheartened to see Warner Archive putting up preorders for their Val Lewton titles and Hollywood's Legends of Horror set as MOD dvd's today, but I'm cup-half-full for the most part.

The final Universal Monster sequels will be released. Somebody will hopefully put out Freaks, The Thing From Another World and War of The Worlds. There's a lot of titles coming this year I'm still gonna replace my dvd's with. I'll eventually rip my collection for in-home streaming using a media server and will still have all my discs in case a hard-drive fails. I'm still (relatively) young but my own eyes are proof that 4k is useless for me. I just don't see any appreciable difference and I have tried. I believe the improvement is there, its just not for me. And anyway, it's the younger folks than me who still owe the economy another trip to the well on media...

For the one or two forthcoming new titles per year I want to own, I guess a digital copy will eventually have to do. But I will ALWAYS find a way to stream it in-home and without people monitoring what I watch so they can better advertise to me.

Where is it supposed to go? It's a conversation. There are no easy answers and I don't think anybody knows for sure exactly where things are going.

Yes it is. COEXIST. Many people love buying Blu-Rays for their favorites. Its a billion dollar market around the entire world. There was just an article saying digital is selling like crap while people wanna buy physical over digital any day. The rental crowd that did not really buy movies before are on streaming now. Since rental is pretty much dead.
