Maybe so, and while am not sold that a one day sale is going to do a huge amount, people don't buy software without players. The more players the more software.

Default Sorry Guys...

I'm now neutral.

I just grabbed a A2 for $99 from BB. With the 5 free mail-in movies, plus the 2 more of your choice instore or online, there's no way I could sit out any longer. That works out to $14.29 for the 7 movie and they threw in a free POS A2 HD-DVD player.

The BDA needs to do something... or the train just might pass them by.

Default Uh-Oh $99 HD-DVD player

Wal-Mart is doing a special sale tomorrow morning at 8:00am. They will be offering a $99 Toshiba HD-DVD player (the 1080i one). So many people are going to be pissed when they find out it's 1080i and they cannot buy movies like Pirates, Ratatouille, Spider-Man, etc... They will just see the price and HD and think it's a great deal.

Default $99 + 7 free movies was enough to pull me in.

I'll buy DUD software only if there's something I really want, or if it's super low price, I might rent a few as well. Then again, I'm really pulling back on my BR software purchases these days too until this stupid war looks to be coming to an end.

Yes, I do feel image is important. But you are making an assumption that "WB seems to care about it". I'm not sure I would walk out on that ledge just yet. These guys can turn on a dime as we saw with Paramount/DW. WB is playing it on the fence, they are essentailly saying to HD-DVD, prove your viable or we will dump you. This is the dynamic now being played out and to at least some credit from the HD-DVD perspective, they are doing all they can to prove that viability. If I were in the BDA I would be saying, the hell with this, we now have HD-DVD almost down and out and what do winners do when they have their opponent "almost down and out"? Of course, the KICK THEM AGAIN and AGAIN until their completely dead. It seems to me that the BDA is saying, "Here, take my hand, I'll let you get back up" -- Doesn't make sense.

My friend, you have feathers, and I'm wondering if there are webbed feet hidden in your shoes. Honestly, you sound like a very intelligent fanboy, one who knows where the limits are and how not to cross the line, just staying on the fringe of being a blatant troll. The number of posts you've managed without being banned is impressive, but I really wonder how much longer you can keep your "objectivity" without revealing alterior motives for being on this site. I know this isn't going to be well-received, but at the same time, I could no longer keep quiet, either. In the end, if you truly are Blu, then maybe you should think twice about posting only those things that make DUD look positive, rather than doing apples to apples comparisons. I'm sure if Sony put out a toaster, that the GE comparable model would trounce it. But then, I don't think Sony when I think toasters, so I wouldn't see the need to post statistics just to make them look bad...
This made me smile and I thank you. I guess you could say I am playing devils advocate more than being one sided. I admitted other times that I am neutral and that is true. Honestly I don't want to get banned as I like to stay up on what both sides are doing. I also don't feel right shaking blu pom-poms when I disagree with something.

Thanks again though, I do appreciate your comment.

They know that the only way to sell HD DVD players is by taking HUGE loses. This is not a good thing. Yes, I am spinning this for blu-ray, but it is not in any way good for HD DVD to sell at this much loss.
Toshiba may be losing millions on this deal but that doesn't mean it's not a smart business move if HD DVD ultimately wins or at least survives the format war.
Sony is doing the same thing with the PS3 (and probably taking significantly larger losses) in its effort to win both the console and HD format wars.

IMO losing millions (even hundreds of millions) is a gamble that both sides are increasingly showing they will take for a chance at the big prize -
billions of dollars in royalties for the next decade or so.

You're quite welcome. And thanks for not taking it as just bashing, I really wouldn't want to see you banned if you're just a neutral supporter, but I did want you to know how it looked...

This is all so dumb. Do you see Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, P&G, John Deere, Wendy's, Burger King, etc etc etc selling a new product at a loss? Get real! It is usually pulled from the market/discontinued once it gets to that point.
Microsoft was and I believe still is selling the Zune at a loss, they also sold the XBOX at a loss initially as do other companies initially introduce product at a loss to gain market share - common practice. Game over.. I'm sorry but you really don't know what your talking about. I won't be responding to any more of this, it just seems that your simply trying to fan the flames of the discussion.

Wrong. BDA is making a profit. Studios (like warner, fox, and disney) are hardly so fickle as to back a format that is literally throwing millions of players and discs at the market for free screaming like crazed psychopaths, "SEE?!? OUR FORMAT IS WINNING! LOOK HOW MANY HD DVDs THERE ARE!!! HAHAHA!" and losing billions of dollars in the process.

Think about that.

In order for them to make an impact, they'll need to move a ton of these BEFORE Christmas and not as Christmas presents. If they all wind up as Christmas presents they won't have an impact in movie sales until after Christmas.

They also have to sell more players then PS3s, and it looks like the PS3s are having a hot Christmas this year.

Paladin
I agree they have a ton of catching up to do, I disagree that it need not be Christmas presents. Chances are when they sell a $200 hd-dvd player they will buy a few movies too. IMO of course.

Looks like other retailers are doing the same thing.

Is this perhaps an outright official price drop to clear these units out or what?

Dang. Just tried to buy one and every BBuy within 100 miles is out. Have to keep watch on Amazon,Wally World and CCity.

Genius! Toshiba is selling at a loss as well. They are all PUBLIC companies. I am still waiting to hear how YOU do it.
