Here's another angle, where you can see the discs on a shelf to the right of the screen (click the image if you're using Tapatalk). Looks neat, right? Tasteful?
You can even see my two rear-surround speakers with candlesticks on 'em.

I just feel that they put out 4K too prematurely. I feel like bluray just came out yesterday and yet they are bringing two more new formats. Most people still havent even acquired all the movies they want on bluray. Im still waiting on tons of titles that havent even gotten released yet. My feelings sometimes is that future releases of bluray down the road may not get the PQ/AQ it would deserve to force people to migrate over to those newer formats. I hope im wrong on this.
No worries I didn't take anything you said personal. Like you I too am waiting for about 26 catalog titles on BD and I'm hoping it does happen, but 4k being here will not prevent that from happening by any means. The reason people should be excited for 4k even if not interested is it shows that studios still believe there is value had for physical media. No company is going to spend money on something they see failing. They are taking a chance now while the 4k talk has been hot hence why it seems premature. If you look at sales for 4k UHD they are ahead of what the projections have been which is a great sign for physical media movie lovers and collectors in general. In the next 2 years almost all TVs available will have 4k and HDR on them so anyone looking to upgrade at all with most likely have to get a 4k TV is they want a new TV. Back on the format though, If the 4K UHD didn't include a BD disc as well I think it would be a dead on arrival format. It was a smart business move and easy for people skeptical for switching over an easy one. If 4k UHD fails in a few years I don't have to worry about rebuying the titles I bought because it comes with a Bluray as well.

4K is the new 3D - a niche of a niche.
This is totally how I feel when im reading about UHD now. Its all just too much to absorb for me. Even im confused and ive just gotten into bluray this year. Also, im reading that broadcast channels have been airing 8K over in Japan and that 16k screens are out. And im reading that the new playstation will not support UHD. That would also make me not wanna slam my hard earned money on a format that may fade out like a fart in the wind.

Bluray is well spread (not like dvd) and just needs to be caught on more by the average "home theater in a box" crowd. Imo, and people will laugh at this, they just need to further reduce the prices of bluray players and media to get them to try to switch over and to maintain media sales. I already feel like that with certain BR titles im almost paying for like I did with LD's. And we all know how LD's lasted.

*edit* Also let me add that when seeing how long (short) bluray has come and seeing other new formats creeping in will also deter people from not wanting to buy media.

Emmet Otter, I've purchased PLANET OF THE APES 13 times, across SIX different formats (Beta, VHS, Laserdisc, DIVX, DVD, and Blu!)

Blu-ray is my last stop.

I'm sort of going back and forth on 4K UHD.

On the one hand, it's always nice to able to watch something with the best picture and sound available. But on the other hand, do I really want to start ANOTHER format? I don't even plan on getting a 4K TV and player any time soon, but I've already got a few movies on 4K pre-ordered "just in case".

As for physical media in general, I hope it never goes away. I'm old fashioned too, I need to actually "own" something. And for me it's all about future-proofing. I rewatch movies.. a lot. I can't tell you how many times I've watched the Star Wars movies or Lord of the Rings. So for me, movies aren't just a "simple way to pass the time", I genuinely love them. I don't like the idea of having to rely on a streaming service like Netflix to be able to watch something I like. And I don't like the idea of having a digital library. It just doesn't seem as "safe" as actually owning a disc. I don't like the idea of a studio being able to "control" what I can and can't watch or which version of something.

It's almost depressing seeing how much studios LOVED Blu-ray when it first came out (watch something like an early Disney Blu-ray or LOST) they go on and on about the benefits of the format. You don't see that anymore lol.

I actually have 1080p projection in my classroom with a dedicated blu-ray player.

Still they have a stake in the format, and a really great way to promote a format and make it flourish more is to include it in your really popular game console. It's just weird that Microsoft would include it in the latest Xbox and Sony passes entirely. It just goes against what they've done for movie formats since DVD with the PS2.

You'd think gamers interested in the UHD format would be inclined to pick up one of the new X-Box consoles over the PS4 Pro then. On the other hand, maybe the outlook on UHD being more than a miniscule niche format is so unpromising that Sony figured they'd make more money just selling their standalone players.

I personally have no real interest in 4K. I watch Blu-Ray and 1080p streaming on a big projector screen and it looks fantastic. There really is a point where you have to say "How much better do I need this to look to sit and enjoy these movies and shows?"

As for rewatching movies, I'm curious-- how big is your collection and how much of it do you rewatch at least semi-regularly? I bought a lot of DVDs and Blu-Rays over the years, and I'd say at least half of my collection just sits and I've never felt like rewatching them after about 2-3 views. There will always be a handful of films and shows I love watching again and again (like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings as you've mentioned) but practically speaking I don't anymore feel like the majority of media really begs for physical ownership. That's just me though.

No, thats the first floor. Upstairs is the bedrooms.
I call it "mid Long Island" only for those who might not be familiar with it, because Bohemia is 50 miles from The Midtown Tunnel, and 50 miles from East Hampton (the best of the Hamptons).
So I'm right in the middle.

Last week I pulled HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN dvd off the shelf, after it had been sitting there for 15 years, so with me you never know.

I agree man, I'm sick of buying them over and over. It's nothing but more of a cash grab. Collecting is fun and I enjoy it. Bluray and dvd will be mainstream.

4K tv's are only popular now because that's the new gadget that retailers like Best Buy are pushing to the populace. The general public will buy their new 4K tv and have no clue what that even means, just like they originally were clueless about widescreen tv's and then stretched out all their 4x3 tv shows. Very few would know the difference between 1080p or 4K. They just see the 4K tv model on display at the store, and are told it's the best one and the new 'thing', so they buy it.

Most people don't even know what a Blu-Ray disc is. Do you think they're suddenly going to go out and seek out UHD movies now that they bought a 4K tv? I'd say at least 90% of consumers who have purchased their new 4K tv will still watch everything via streaming, won't even have a disc player (DVD, Blu, or UHD) at all, and won't have a clue that they're not really utilizing 4K much at all.
