I'm pretty sure the digital before physical is the time it takes to manufacture and ship discs out.

Well, maybe. But a month?
Hmmmm.... working at a manufacturing plant where we did everything from making the glass master to cutting the stamper, to replicating the DVDs and silk screening em, to printing the paper stock, to the assembling... and to the shipping...etc We would get "0 Day Turn jobs" where we'd be able to get a complete 5000 piece job out the door from scratch out in two days.

Possible. I work for a pharmaceutical company, and it takes us about a month from the start of manufacturing to final packaging, to get it out the door. That is why I thought that. Blurays might be different lol. Probably easier!

Usually, it's the art design that takes the time. But, the larger clients usually had the art files ready for us too; Front cover. Back. Disc label silk screening...etc.

A damning statement about physical media from controversial director Uwe Boll, who just announced his retirement from making films:

“The market is dead,” he adds, “you don’t make any money anymore on movies because the DVD and Blu Ray market worldwide has dropped 80 per cent in the last three years. That is the real reason; I just cannot afford to make movies.”

I can see why Uwe Boll can't make money on movies. It's not because of the physical media market.

It kind of is, since his sales were dependent on things like people who just indiscriminately bought whatever they saw on the shelf at Best Buy or found in the bin at Wal Mart. Those markets have basically evaporated, especially the former when Best Buy has been slicing down their in-store sections. Discerning customers = no Uwe Boll sales.

As easy as it is to skewer Uwe Boll, it's also cheap and doesn't strike me as a particularly intelligent response. Look, I'm no fan of his (I don't think I've ever seen any of his movies, and I don't think I want to), but the bottom line is: He was making money before - he isn't now - period! I love physical media as much as the next guy, but anyone who denies that the landscape has changed has their head in the clouds and their pie in the sky.

Is the statement, "the DVD and Blu-ray market have dropped 80%" actually accurate? Is that true?!

I had to look him up because I didn't know who he was. Looked at the list of movies he directed, hadn't seen a one. I'm wondering though, on the list was "Auschwitz" - is that the movie people on YouTube are getting the Hitler memes from?

No idea. I'm guessing his math is off. Doesn't change the basic facts though.

Honestly, Uwe Boll's movies were more benefited by rental places like Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos, not so much actual blind buys if you ask me.

No, the movie all of the Hitler memes came from is Downfall.

The best I can describe Boll is that he made a bunch of utter crap, one decent film (Rampage) and two crappy sequels that undid the good will of his one decent movie.

Where does a filmmaker make more money? Box office, or home video release?
I understand a film may PULL IN hundreds of millions at the box office, but that's not what the producers/writers/directors get.
Maybe what I mean to ask is, where does the studio pull in more money; theatrical release or home video market?

Yes the landscape has changed and yes entertainment culture has become so compartmentalized that it's either low budget or completely commercial. The movies worth owning because they are important enough to touch everybody are more and more rare. Catalog titles are now where my interest lies and when streaming takes over, I'll have the best possible editions of the movies I love on disc, will rip them for in-house streaming and won't be shafted with low quality files like the iTunes model for music. I'll keep the hard discs in storage like I do with cds and carry on.

In this day and age of the Internet, directors could devorce themselves from the studios and thus make more money overall. Louis C.K. makes a decent amount selling his comedy shows directly on his website. No middleman to take a cut.

Part of the reason the landscape is changing is because of a self-fulfilling prophesy by Hollywood and retail stores.

They claim over and over nobody buys catalog titles any more, which is boloney. The same people that bought laserdiscs bought DVDs and also blu-rays. We're still movie fans. But retail has failed miserably due to their own blunders. I continue to see amazing new releases of catalog titles on blu-ray. Just an hour ago Z.P.G - Zero Population Growth got an announcement for crying out loud! And Time After Time was announced yesterday. But retail refuses to stock anything any more. Best Buy used to be a great place to find DVDs ages ago. Now it's close to worthless for blu-ray. Same for Wal-Mart and Target. Only the biggest blockbuster titles (and Disney animation) are carried on blu-ray in retail. Best Buy has a random sprinkling of films on blu-ray but you can't count on them. Almost every time I go in I walk out empty-handed.

I've said it many times - I'm betting the average person who wanders trough the movie section at their local Wal-Mart or Target assumes blu-ray is already dead based on the fact that 90% of the movies stocked in the stores are DVD. Wal-Mart almost carries no blu-ray at this point. People naturally assume movies aren't getting released on blu-ray since all they see are DVDs. I think people would be surprised if they were aware of all the titles available online on blu-ray, but many, many people just shop casually for titles - they aren't hardcore like we are and follow forums. They just know what they see in stores.

I think we are all playing fast and loose with the term movie... I don't believe he has made one yet.
