The average consumer (those here are not the average consumer). I know my friends think all shows on Netflix are in 4k, especially if they have their 4k streaming package. Their 1080p looks darn good to be honest that even I am hard pressed to tell the difference at times. Home theater, sound bars, surround sound elevates the experience for streaming because all shows now stream in surround sound (5.1, 7.1, Atmos) and most consumers don't even have a 5.1 setup. Most settle for a soundbar and call it a day. I'll still buy physical media but personally I stopped buying on release date years ago as I find if you just wait a few weeks, the same movie can be had for almost half the price. I do give Best Buy all of my other business: tablets, laptops, appliances, TV you name it. They get 110% of my business there. |

Birates will increase, hopefully sooner rather than later. Sony already has a service that streams 4K at 80mbps. I could see companies like Apple offering something like that too, for every movie they offer on Apple TV/iTunes.

I have no doubt Best Buy will be gone in two to five years. Circuit City, Sears, Radio Shack, all gone. Partly because the times are changing but mostly because CEO's have no incentive to manage a company wisely anymore. They get paid millions per year no matter how badly they run a company into the ground, then if they do get canned they get a multimillion dollar payout and move on to the next company. Bob Nardelli is a perfect example, he nearly ruins Home Depot, is allowed to resign and given over 200 million, then Chrysler Corp. is stupid enough to hire him as CEO. It's just a game to these morons and they don't care if a company goes in the toilet or not.

The bottom line is the same people completely satisfied with streaming, are the same people completely satisfied with 25mbps. More bandwidth costs more money for both the service provider and the ISP and the majority of people simply don't care, they'd rather save even $2/month than get 80mbps video. |

I knew it was only a matter of time since they barely carry any in Canada over the last few years, but it's still sad nonetheless. I have so many fond memories of perusing the aisles and aisles of movies in alphabetical order, or scrounging through the bargain bin to find some great deals. Also looking through paper flyers every week to look at all the movie and video game deals. Not to mention going out really early for Boxing Day with family/friends to score some amazing deals. The 90's to early 2010's were great for physical media. In-store shopping just continues to become more boring and boring. My future children will never know what the excitement was like (nor going out to rent a movie/video game on a Friday night).

I can't refute anything you said because it was pure anecdotal nonsense, supported by nothing but your dumb feelings. But if you want to say I didn't address anything you said, ok fine. You also didn't address the Best Buy employee in the thread who said they saw this coming years ago. Is he a liar? Does his anecdotal evidence matter less because it doesn't support your stupid claim. Since you operate on the anecdotal - over the past couple years everyone has noted that their local BB have devoted less and less space to physical media. Within the last month or so there has also been a lot mentioned of Target either completely getting rid of their media section or devoting a tiny endcap or boxes to it. Beyond those accounts I have also seen this firsthand at multiple Target locations. Now why would Target do that? |

and for those saying well Best Buy is ceding their business to Target. Target's physical media section, games and movies is 1/3rd of the size it was 5 years ago. It's not getting any bigger or better.
Their physical media section is shrinking year by year. I don't think the announcement of Best Buy will do anything for Target, rather I think it's a matter of time before Target makes their own announcement ending their sales of physical media for movies. People and myself still prefer to buy physical media in games is because of resale value. Games hold their values MUCH more than movies do. And point in check, I have been a fan of Diablo since the first one was released on PC. I bought D4 Digital copy for $90+tax and have not played it since 2 weeks after release. Wish I could sell it and get most of my money back but no, because it's digital all $97 of my dollars are gone. Maybe in 1-2 years it'll be in a place where it's fun to play, but as for now, I can't deal with the shortcomings of it. That's why I hate buying digital games. If you don't like it, too bad, you're stuck. |

I've been going to BB less and less over the past few years anyways so no big loss I suppose. With physical media gone, I will probably visit BB once or twice a year at best. Most of the other items they sell in-store I would probably buy elsewhere or on their own website.

Jokes on BESTBUY, I spend about 3 grand in physical media a year and EVERYTHING else I get there I get as a thank you for carrying physical media. Guess I’ll be paying off my BB card in Jan 2024 and purchasing my next flatscreen and back up UHD disc players from Walmart or another retailer. Other items I have in save that I’ll be switching include a tea kettle, my next washer and dryer (which are long over due to be replaced) and that’s about it…aside from 2 PS5 games that should have already come out that now are pushed back to 2025
![]() ![]() (EDIT) unless they keep UHD films, then I’ll continue… |

By this trend, I can see major Hollywood studios will close their home video department by 2025. And for physical media distributions, they will likely just stop them permanently or outsource to 3rd party.
In the future, you can expect most of the movies that are not box office hits or critically acclaimed will be available on digital only after their initial cinema release. |
