Wow, a special edition boutique label release. You really showed me.
The Studios themselves used to do this kind of stuff. They haven't in a long time. Why? Because the people who did that kind of stuff there are no longer employed by them.

(Seriously- I can't remember a recent blu ray that looked like an old master that was just slapped on a disc. There have been BAD transfers, yes...)
Most of the Paramount catalog Blu-rays for the past couple years for one, if they weren't "Presents" or 4K. Some of the masters Shout got.

Speaking of 4K I don't remember people being too thrilled with Heat and the first Pirates of the Caribbean or Legend of Zorro or The Silence of the Lambs.

I try to purchase quality releases, so boutiques tend to get more of my money.

Sure, some of the studios aren’t putting the effort in they used to and like any industry some releases are of better quality, have original audio, extras, etc. while other feel like an afterthought. However, the number of recent releases I’ve actually been disappointed after seeing are few and far between.

If you want high quality releases they are pretty easy to find and thanks to sites like this as long as you don’t do a ton of preordering you can easily figure out which duds to look out. I have a handful in my collection, but they’re easily dwarfed by the thousands of hours of great releases sitting on the shelf next to them.

Those are all examples of botched jobs. They weren't old masters slapped on a disc- they simply did a terrible job. That WILL happen from time to time. Law of averages. But if you listen/read interviews with the likes of Frank Tarzi from Kino Lorber or Jesse Nelson from Diabolik- they take remasters, transfers, extras and and the quality of their product very seriously.

I fail to see how this is "good news" for the future of physical media.

Disney did not care about handling physical media.
Sony can take care of that now.

And very few people even knew there was such a thing as the "Disney Movie Club"- so it's demise is nothing impactful at all.

And they're just going to be doing what Disney tells them to do. You also forget they control the 20th Century Fox catalog.

That's some denial there since Disney had a couple dozen titles on Blu-ray exclusive to DMC.

Not to mention both DMC threads have exploded since the announcement, with a few dozen pages each in 48 hours, titles sold out and already going for $$$ on eBay.

For a couple decades Disney was seen as the 800-lb gorilla in home video. Disney being Blu-ray exclusive at the launch of the HD disc formats was a big deal.

But keep whistling past the graveyard and thinking everything's hunky-dory.

Release strategy aside, Disney's best blu-rays are a delight. Upper grade transfers like Treasure Planet will be missed.

Right. Disney made a deal with Sony to not make and distribute discs. And to not make money.
That makes so much more sense. Lol.
It's amazing how, while whistling past the graveyard, I can't keep up with the sheer number of new releases that keep coming.

Luckily, so are Sony’s. Let’s hope that trend continues with their Disney collaboration.

Disney elected to hire someone else and not make the money themselves, yes, that makes more sense.

Sheer number of new releases? It's slowed considerably. I have very few pre-orders.

Holy cow!

I have to admit, I didn’t realize THAT many movies were STILL getting physical releases

That’s impressive because I feel physical media sales have slowed.

So that raises a question :
Are they perhaps replicating/duplicating fewer copies of each title?

Perhaps almost the same amount of movies get put on physical media, but the quantity of each title has dropped significantly?
Ya know what I mean?
Like perhaps in the year 2011, for major releases, they would print/replicate/duplicate 150,000 copies of each movie… But today they only print/replicate/duplicate 40,000 copies of each

This is a list of Blu ray and 4K releases JUST FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH!
Now take out the UK titles.

While you're at it, take out the boutique titles and see just how many studio releases we're getting. You know: Warner, Paramount, Disney, Universal, Sony. Those are the studios that drive physical media.

So if we follow your cherry picked rules and only buy from the specific studios & countries you list then things look grim? Well, I guess we are lucky you don’t get to choose for us. Instead there are so many good titles being released daily I can’t keep up. Boutique or no, the market is saturated with quality releases.

Fact: the market will not survive by people importing.

Fact: the market will not survive by boutique labels alone.

Fact: the market will not survive by having only one retailer.

Cherry picked rules? More like reality.

When the market doesn’t exist, feel free to let us know. In the mean time, I’ll continue enjoying my hobby…in reality.

So it looks like its true that alot of titles still get released on Blu-ray.

But it's also true that not as many people buy physical media today in 2024 as did in 2014.

So it must also be true that they're not making as many copies of each, right?
(Instead of making 70,000 blu-rays of Movie ABC, they only make 20,000 blu-rays of Movie ABC).

Sheer number of new releases? It's slowed considerably. I have very few pre-orders.
With a quick check, I have over 60 discs on order or in transit right now. Someone else mentioned it's difficult to keep up with all the new titles being released and I agree 100%.
