Default My take...

I've been reading all these posts on the price of Blu-ray and many of you have valid points.

Unfortunately, there is no one clear answer...

Yes, having a $100 player is great for selling more hardware, but at the cost of losing $$$ per unit.

Having sold more hardware will translate into more sales of the media (that is a long term view).

I believe that Blu-ray needs to have low prices to compete, but I also believe that there should be a range of players, from high-end (Denon, Sony, etc.) to low-end (some Chinese no-name player) and anywhere in between.

The gradual drop in hardware prices will take place, given enough time for the format to survive. This is where the balancing act comes in.

The advantage that the BDA has is the multitude of CE vendors, which offers them some flexibility and better strategy. This must be exploited at all times.

As far as pricing is concerned... look at the prices for SD-DVD movies... they came down in time. You don't need the format wars for that to happen.

Look at the history of personal computers for some hindsight...

Do not let egos come in the way of decision making.... we need a balance in our strategy.

Bogdan

PS. As long as Microsoft is involved... I would take nothing for granted!

Simply put I know alot of people who would buy an hd dvd drive if it were 100/150. To the average joe PRICE is what matters. That is why the 360 sold 11million units and the ps3 cant compete. That said. the hd a2 is a piece of crap and 1080p should be the standard. I for one love the blu ray player over the hd dvd any day of the week. BUT Sony doesnt ever compete on their pricing and that is why they always lose fornat battles...simply put they are arrogant So I strongly hope blu wins, but if they dont they can only point the finger at themselves.

P.S. If warner goes all in for blu its over anyway. but that also means you better get used to payin 23-29 bucks for a blu ray, which is upsurd!
Maybe so, but isn't Microsoft arrogant as well? I would say Toshiba as well, considering how I've been treated when I've worked with their products. So a lot of companies could be tossed under that moniker.

Yep, there will probably very limited quantities of these, just to get people through the doors. Stop worrying about HD-DVD. They are doing NOTHING. Buy Blu and keep buying.

DVDs were up in this price range when they first came out, and VHS, I won't even go there. How is this different? Prices will come down on media.

Many have said they can't lower prices on movies otherwise why would studios even release a premium product for the same price as dvd. You're assuming HD will replace DVD. I'm assuming they won't.

I think that HD media will replace DVDs, but at a much slower rate than DVDs replaced VHS... and the format war is not helping that adoption.

Fair enough.

When do you foresee dvd's no longer being available?

You are so right.

Playstation? Never heard of it, it was drowned under by the Nintendo 64.

Playstation 2? Dominated by the Gamecube and Xbox.

CDs? Who'd ever want these? Cassettes FTW!

My god if one more person posts that Sony always loses format battles I'm going to go postal.

Unfortuately, not for a long time, especially with the backwards compatibility in the new high def (generic term used) players.

Edit: What I do see is that once the hardware prices come down low enough, very few people will buy an SD DVD player. I just hope that this battle will be over, with Blu-ray as victor.

Bogdan

It's clearly FUD. Anyone who is looking for information on Blu-ray and comes across this will quickly dismiss it as fanboyism, whether they know to call it that or not...

It is obviously FUD. Who would look at one site like that and stop anyways? They would keep looking if they are doing research.
Also the "comments" are probably all from the same guy making up names and outright lying. "Look at the sales numbers..." is a load of crap. If anyone DID look at the sales numbers, they'd see the market is TOTALLY Blu-ray!
