i love blu-ray, but that shouldn't mean i have to spout blu-ray only from my mouth...does it?
I think so.

What that article doesn't mention is the fire sale that RCA had on CED players shortly before they stopped manufacturing them.

nobody with a meager income is going to buy a 100 dollar hd player knowing there's 2 competing formats out there.

people who have the money on the other hand, who see this as the perfect time to go hd, find out there are no 100 dollar players in stock, might get talked into spending a bit more and getting a more expensive hd dvd player.

ok so they are selling the a2 for 99 ok cool whatever. After that there will be no more, that is it, discontinued. Then u will have the the 3rd gen hd dvd players which are almost the same price as the new blu ray players. This is temporary. Like any war, when one side is losing, acts of desperation come.

Ummm how do you know? LOL I know my parents might. They know nothing of the differences of bluray and hd-dvd but they know prices of products and wouldn't much care about the differences when comparing $500 vs $199. They just got a new HDTV and love having an HD picture. If a salesman gives them a choice of watching HD movie for $199 vs $500, i know which one they are choosing no matter how much i talk up blu-ray to them. That's the average consumer right there....sorry face reality! WE re early adopters and educated consumers. People like my folks and 95-99% of the rest are not....

no offense, then youre parents are dumb. without knowing the facts and just blindly paying for a player because of price is dumb. and i honestly know a lot of people who are waiting to see who wins, and they know of these cheaper prices.

That's just my point: the majority of the american public won't learn this until after they start looking for movies to put into their shiny new A2.

Lets face facts here: while we love to bash hd-dud, there are good titles available there too. The masses won't (immediately) toss their A2 b/c there's no Disney. They'll find title or two to buy.

So what's the size of this "bump" going to be? I don't know, but I do know that it will prolong the war to some amount if the BDA does nothing, thus keeping cheap and plentiful Blu-ray titles a bit further off.

Sony's PS3 campaign is welcome news here btw. It may represent a different tactic: arming the masses with facts before they do the compulsive buy.

Heck, if the average consumer knew you couldn't scratch a Blu-ray disk easily he/she'd think twice about the A2 (especially if he/she had young children to deal with). Some BDA associate should put this simple fact into an ad campaign...

Of course they are dumb about something like this but so is like i said, 95-99% of the rest of the population when you are considering mass adoption. People want easy and cheap. PERIOD.

Also if millions of HD-DVD players suddenly fly off the shelf, i think you'd have to consider becomming neutral if you are a large studio. As many should know, it's all about making $$. Loyalty only goes so far.

finally, other members who know what they're talking about

but yeah, i think the new campaign by the ps3 should help to an extent. i think most adults ignore playstation ad's, so hopefully they'll cater to the older crowd as well.

but no scratches, yeah..that should be a big selling point for people with kid's. i've seen how some people treat their media, its amazing

I hope you are right but I doubt it.... $100 is pretty cheap if you can play HD movies for any of us much less Joe Wally World. Come on...you have to admit that.

The next player I buy will be between $1200 and $2000. I'm happy with their pricing. Selling players for $99 to people who won't buy movies isn't gonna win the hearts of studios.

oh i completely agree. no doubt. i mean, i i'd love to pick one up myself if it had the features, there's a number of hd dvd movies i'd love to have and am frankly tired of waiting for. but you and me both know better than to waste money on it lol

They'll buy movies if they get a player for Christmas from a well wishing but ignorant source.
