Default Had to get away!!!!

Hi all... I hope you all don't mind if I post on this forum! I had to get away from those "other" forums because since Tosh started selling their >HD hd-dvd players for >$100 it has become hard to talk any sense into them hd-dvd fanboys!

It will if the studios (aka WB) are looking at 4th QTR HARDWARE SALES. Please read the quotes from WB, they didn't say they were looking at 4th QTR HD Sales, they specifically said (in some of their press releases), they were looking at hardware sales. Someone on the BD side needs to respond in some way to this $98 or $198 player, it could be a subtle response, but there has to be something. The "status quo" won't work with these cheapass player prices.

Welcome!!! Even though there is a lot of insanity going on right now with this forum also, it will calm back down in about a week or so and you'll find out it's not a bad place to post at.

It's not going to matter until the sales numbers come out........and then it's still not going to matter. I have both formats and was in Target on Saturday. I bought Mr. Brooks on Blu. HD had nothing even of remote interest to me and I was in HD before Blu. There's not enough of their movies to justify buying even a $98.00 player. Based on what I've learned here if I didnt have the A20 I still wouldnt buy this because of the lack of technology and lack of movies.

There may be more hd dvd fanboys here. Since the article about WB we have been hit with at least 20 times the usual # of new members and most of them are here to try to sneakily spread fear, doubt, and even advertise the Tosh. firesale.
You could say that we have a lot of people on here in drag.

i love blu-ray, but that shouldn't mean i have to spout blu-ray only from my mouth...does it?
Apparently it does. More and more this is becoming nothing more than a cheerleading site where "meaningful discussion" does not include pointing out anything straying from the party line.

Agreed. Toshiba just put the big fat elephant on the table. It's the biggest card they can (ever) play.

I joined this forum a few weeks ago but didn't make a post until now. Yeah, I have no idea what the HD-DVD people are trying to do. I wonder who should be paranoid - those who have PS3's (I have a PS3 80 GB that I bought a few weeks ago) and/or a BD movie only player or those who are stuck with those cheaper players.

The status quo has not worked with "cheapass player prices" this whole time.

It'll change now...why? Because a bunch of morons say so?

Blu-Ray has such a phenomenal lead that they can wait a couple of weeks and see if this firesale has a real effect. If it does, *THEN* you can respond. You've cost yourself nothing substantial, and you aren't jumping the gun at every little BS thing put out by the opposition.

Blu-Ray would already be dead if it was run by people so fundamentally clueless about the nature of business as yourselves.

If you think you are so business savvy, go start yourself up a flipping business. When you are a millionaire, then you can talk from a position of authority. As it is you guys are just idiots.

I totally agree. People can call those HD DVD players junk, but the average joe isn't tech savy, and they are still going to scoop them up. The BDA needs to stop sitting on their rear ends and counter with cheaper prices themselves ASAP. A $100 player vs a $400 player makes it an easy decision for a lot of the general public. BDA needs to get a player out there that's at $250. The longer they sit around and do nothing, the more momentum HD DVD is going to gain. Even if it is a short term thing, i think Sony needs to get blow those 1.0 profile players out on Black Friday. I'd like to see them cut a deal with Amazon to move a lot of player on that day at $200-$250.

It's huge. Homers will be in denial for awhile of course but I never even imagined a $98 player. You know how many people will buy those for gifts this year if that price sticks around and they actually supply it? Supply is the big question but if they come anywhere close to keeping shelves stocked this christmas at that price things will change in a HURRY. No doubt.

Okay i am going to try an interpret what matt was meaning earlier in his thread, only this time put it in a non trolling way

I think what he was getting at was while it is undisputable that 1080p gives better quality then 1080i that there are a lot of people who don't have 1080p sets.

What I am a little confused about is what happes is the following (you guys probably all know this but hey i am new here)....if you play a 1080p signal through a 1080i or 720p TV, will it be better quality then 1080i signal through the same TV's?

The only reason I ask is that if that from what I have been able to tell the difference between a 1080p and 1080i signal seems fairly small for people that don't have a 1080p TV and so the cheap 200 or even firesale 100 dollar 1080i output players might appeal to such people.

So while for 1080p TV people the difference is small thus making bluray the obvious best choice for barely a 50 dollar difference, for people with lower quality TV's the lower quality player might do just fine (if they can find any decent movies besides transformers to play on it that is!)

Default Just saw a Wal-Mart HD-DVD commercial

A Christmas commercial talking about how cheap the HD-DVD player was and how great the movie clarity was. So is Wal-Mart just trying to make a buck or are they supporting one side a wee bit more.

It does seem that way now...they may be price driven just like K-mart, but once these sales are over I wonder if things will go back to normal.
